Hi Joe
What version of software is your rosetta running ?

Thx

by any chance, does this coincide with usage of the radio on a particular frequency ?
I recall some users having radio interference from the radio due to a harmonic close to the GPS frequency

can you share your ICAO code you have set (a screenshot will help)
also provide details of a recent flight location and time

Couple of questions on that.
1) how sensitive is a unit to heat? It does get quite warm in the front luggage bay.
We have no real definitive data on this, suffice to say all components are for consumer operation rather than industrial or military

2) how about Wi-Fi? Signal strength? We can have a play with this before we commit but I understand there may be a way to boost Wi-Fi strength?
The Wifi strength is default set at the maximum which can legally be operated

Finally, for the GPS mouse sounds like just leaving it on the coming is the best option?
This sounds like a good option

thx

Thanks for getting back to me. It’s a usb data-only 4G dongle with its own SIM card. Pic attached. It’s powered by a dedicated usb cable and not by the FX unit. I think it takes a few seconds longer to fully boot up than the FX unit so potentially its SSID is not visible to FX when FX powers up. However FX does not appear to keep scanning for known SSID’s and automatically connect if a previously registered one appears.

You are correct, the FX does not continually scan, there is a very good technical reason for this to do with performance.
Once powered up it will perform 3 scans, then it will revert to a manual connection mode.

Can I ask you to try the following sequence

1. power up the 4g dongle
2. confirm you can see the 4g dongle ssid from a device - eg iphone, ipad
3. power up FX

Does the FX now connect to the 4G device ?

Hi Judd, can you confirm your device is licensed ?
it looks like it expired 2025-08-02

Fx will reconnect to the last known network IF it is present
Can I ask, what type of device you are trying to connect to ?
If it is an iPhone, the iPhone will
Only allow clients to connect, IF it is currently on its hotspot page

General Discussion / Re: Strange Pilotaware tracking outside the UK
« on: July 09, 2025, 07:13:05 am »
There are many routes that data is now passed to/from our servers
As you quite rightly say, ground detection is one method, and that can be via ATOM stations or OGN receivers
Additionally, the airborne systems are also capable of using the cellular network (IGRID) to send and receive data when the system is paired with a phone
Finally SkyGrid allows passing of data via an intermediary to any of the downstream connections, ie ATOM and IGRID

So there are multiple paths that are in use simultaneously

Does your FX have a gps lock ?

Interested to hear results of experiments

do you have the premium version of safesky that allows you to connect to Pilotaware, if so I am pretty sure that will be what causes the issue

I saw mention of SafeSky, is that not correct?

Can you describe in detail the connections to the FX and the software being run ?
Thx

This is a long story.

in the FLARM protocol, there is no way to communicate the tailreg/flightID, only the ICAO code.
SD added an extension to the protocol, such that you could append a tailreg to the ICAO code, so in the message that goes from PilotAware to SD the ID changed from (for example)

400ABC
to
400ABC!G-ABCD

Unfortunately, this illegal syntax causes foreflight to crash.
So we try to detect in the following manner.

If there is only a PilotAware connection using UDP (when you tell SD to connect using PilotAware), we will send the registration.
If any device connects using TCP (which is used by Foreflight) we have to disable sending the tailreg, otherwise if the connection is foreflight - it will crash.

Can I ask how you are connecting SD to the FX, and is this the only connection to FX ?

I hear mention of safesky in this thread, I dont know if safesky connects using TCP to FX, if so we have to assume it could be foreflight

thx

Technical Support / Re: Intermittent GPS dropout on FX

Hi all
External does not indicate remote antenna, it indicates a remote gps source, eg a flarm input providing gps messages
Can you describe your configuration, most importantly what is connected to the rj45 connectors
FX is seeing data and attempting to decode
Thx

If you can provide a link to the track file we can take a look
Also what are you using to view the traffic ?
