Technical Support / Re: Shortening the 1090Mz antenna

Have a look at this thread for some external 868MHz (PAW compatible) external antennas.

For 1090MHz, any transponder antenna will do.

Maybe something like this:

Technical Support / Re: WiFi Dongle Replacement

It might be as straightforward. I've had problems with two of these Wifi dongles now. Latest one's just gone in the bin.  ;D I had a couple more in my drawer and a replacement has made things hunky dorey again.

Is it a Pi 2 or a Pi 3? The Wifi dongles can be a little flaky on the Pi 2. I recently had connectivity issues with my Classic, so I swapped the Wifi dongle and it was fine after that. I then tried the (suspected faulty) Wifi dongle on my home PC, connecting to my home router, and it kept disconnecting. I threw it in the bin.  :o

Good thing is they're only now 99p on AliExpress.  ;D (though I have a few at home so didn't order any more - had a few issues with them in the past hence the spare stock!)

A GPS mouse should also be better due to the lack of interference from the SDR dongle(s). The standard GPS always works better on a USB extension when moved further away from the unit. However in real life, sat on a coaming or under a canopy, it doesn't matter much, as reception there is unhindered.

Does your window have a heat reflective coating? Most double glazing has and it's always best to open the window the throw the GPS unit outside in such circumstances! The coating is metallic.

I usually find buying brands (not necessarily brands you've heard of though!) from China via either AliExpress, Banggood or Gearbest provide the best cost vs. security cards.

@Paul_Sengupta Nice find, you must live on eBay/Alibaba!

One does one's best to keep the Chinese economy running.

: and you have to switch off the UPS as well as the power supply to turn off the PAw?

Yes, it's got a button on the UPS board to switch the unit on or off from the internal battery. Hence you'd probably need a custom case with an external button to push through for this.

You'd need to design your own case and have a Y lead for power, but I've had success using one of these:

I haven't fitted it in a case yet!  :o

This is cheaper, isn't advertised as 2.4A, but has the same description below. Make of it what you will...  :o

I bought one of these for charging phones and such, and have been fairly impressed even though it doesn't say what gauge the wire is. You can get 1.5m as well if it suits better than 2m. I thought I'd try it due to the flexibility of the cable. Seems to work quite well.

Advertised as "2.4A" but not for the 2m cable!

if you REALLY have 18AWG, thats really good, I would like to know where you got 18AWG with a MicroUSB connector

If you remove the GPS, the PAW shouldn't transmit as it has nothing to transmit.

I had a go with formatter V4 on a Windows PC earlier. I put the resulting card in my Pi 3 (Rosetta) which I plugged into my TV. It froze at 3%. I power reset it and it started again and carried on to completion this time.
