OGN-R PilotAware / Re: WiFi

After. I didn't bother stopping the service. I made the disk rw, edited the file, saved it (!), set the disk to ro, then rebooted.

I believe with the Raspberry Pi, it was also a case where a standard 3 pole 3.5mm plug was used. It should really be a 4 pole plug on the PilotAware side. Using a three pole plug has been reported as the cause of low audio in the past.

Also make sure you choose aircraft type in drop down box.

It didn't have Bulldog in the list so somehow I've ended up being an Avro Vulcan.

That's the PAW transmitting. You're only going to fix it if you move the PAW/antenna to a different position.

OGN-R PilotAware / Interesting IP67 waterproof case

Just had an e-mail through advertising an outdoor case. It's not the cheapest of cases but it might interest some people.

If it's the CPT one, I'd be wary. CPT converters have been reported on here before as being sources of interference.

Yep. I recently renewed my "experimental" station using new software on a new PI 3 and I got Wifi working almost immediately, no problems.

I edited the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf file for which you have to unlock the read/write and then edit the permanent one which is /etc_org/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf. So something like:

sudo /root/mount_rw.bash
sudo nano /etc_org/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Then add in lines with your SSID and password:

network={
    ssid="<ssid>"
    psk="<password>"
}

Then set read-only again:

sudo /root/mount_ro.bash

and reboot.

I've set up a static IP address as well on mine so I can easily find it and log on using SSH, but that's not necessary just for it to run.

I *think* this time around that's all I did and it connected to my Wifi. I'm not in Guildford at the moment so I don't know if this is exactly correct but if it doesn't work, come back and I'll check.

Possibly another thing you can do is to buy the older, Classic style GPS dongle. The newer GPS dongle is wider. You can buy the old style from e-bay or AliExpress for about a fiver, take the plastic case off it and use that instead. It should allow something to be plugged in alongside it. The GPS performance isn't quite as good as the new one but in most cases it's fine.

France isn't well stocked with FR24 receivers.

I was at a friend's house near Bordeaux yesterday and he was saying that, it was difficult trying to track people, especially those without ADS-B as it's rare to reach enough sites for multilateration. He's considering putting in a receiver at his house.

On the plus side, a few British aeroplanes were flying around France yesterday with PilotAware. I saw one which flew close to me. ATC called out myself as traffic to him (I wasn't talking to ATC) and he said he had me on his traffic screen. :D

It's on the front page of the built in web page, 192.168.1.1.

I'd go for one without the aerial, it'll only get in the way!  ;D

I can't speak for one or the other. They are advertised as RT5370 chipset devices. A friend bought one which looked like the one with the aerial but it had the wrong chipset. There are others which look like the one without the aerial but they have other chipsets such as the 8188 and such, which won't work. Here's one with the 8188 - don't get this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Realtek-RTL8188-USB-WiFi-802-11B-G-N-Wireless-Adapter-Network-Dongle-Hot/254224278100

There are some which look correct, but don't say which chipset they have, like the following:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Wireless-Laptop-Mini-Dongle-802-11n-g-b-WIFI-Network-Adapter-WLAN-150Mbps-Y/401767527051

It may have the correct chipset, it may not. Who knows?  :o

At least if you get one advertising RT5370 then you can get your money back if it turns out it's not the case. Can't recommend any particular suppliers, they seem to come and go and the prices come and go as well.

I ordered a couple of SDR dongles which were advertised as having R820T tuners, which turned out to have E4000 tuners. Ok generally, but no good for 1090MHz ADS-B. They gave my my money back after they asked me if I could use them at all. I replied, "Not for the application I wanted them for, no."
