OGN-R PilotAware / Interesting IP67 waterproof case
« on: September 06, 2019, 12:30:30 pm »
Just had an e-mail through advertising an outdoor case. It's not the cheapest of cases but it might interest some people.

OGN-R PilotAware / Identifying potential gaps
« on: July 12, 2018, 09:26:22 am »
There was a bit of a discussion the Flyer forums about potential holes in the coverage of OGN-R. I'm starting this thread so that people who have visually seen collections of gliders which they suspect were Flarm equipped, but did not see them on their traffic display, can post their findings here. This way it may be possible to identify either a) if an existing station isn't working, or b) whether it's possible that people here will have contacts with those in a certain area or on a certain airfield where an extra OGN-R station can be established.

So far the area around Lasham has been mentioned and also Banbury.

So please post your findings.

General Discussion / 33 packets with no antenna
« on: October 17, 2016, 04:05:45 am »
I've currently got one of my Pi B+ PAWs acting as a ground station. In order to not be flooded with transponder traffic and just concentrate on the P3i stuff, I've unplugged the antenna from the dongle, with the PAW just sitting in my living room, though not that far from the window.

Today I received 33 tranponder packets...  :o  ;D

Took my PAW down to my Andover Strut general fly-chat night tonight, and I think at least three more people are sold on the concept. One has Runway HD on an iPad, first time I'd seen that particular piece of software with traffic. Anyway, said tablet owner is part of the "system" at Boscombe Down. The military have been fitting FLARM, and he asked me if it was possible to interface the FLARM unit to the PAW, like I've suggested before. However, unlike my FLARM unit, he said his was a small unit with a micro USB socket on it. Mine is an older one which has RS232 out, I don't know what this thing has. I might need to go and have a look sometime.

Haven't had mine fixed yet, I'll have to make arrangements.

General Discussion / GPS information on homepage
« on: June 10, 2016, 09:54:14 am »
Quick question, under GPS on the home page, it has "GPS fix (SPS)" and "Mode=3D". I take it SPS means Standard Positioning Service? Is there an indication of whether WAAS/EGNOS is being received? I seen to remember it's an easy spot, a 1 in a certain NMEA message means non WAAS, a 2 means WAAS. It would be nice to have WAAS indicated if only for setting how much to trust the GPS altitude.

General Discussion / 192.168.1.1 and all that jazz
« on: June 10, 2016, 01:21:40 am »
Found something interesting tonight. My home network is on 192.168.1.x with the router on 192.168.1.254. I hooked up the PAW with a cable and it was assigned IP address 192.168.1.76. However, I found that I, when connected to my home network, could talk to the PAW on 192.168.1.76 *and* on 192.168.1.1. Having found this out, I tried connecting Sky Demon over my home network and it worked.  :D

Technical Support / QNH 1305mb
« on: June 10, 2016, 12:33:00 am »
I received my bridge today (cheers Dave!) and have just put the whole PilotAware together on my RP2. I updated the software to 20160530.

However, when I look at the web page, I'm seeing strange values for QNH and QNE. The QNH is currently showing 1305mb! I don't think this is right. Either my barometric sensor is a bit out or there are some sums being done incorrectly somewhere.

Hmm, just looked, now showing QNH 1313mb, QNE=-8156ft, GNSS=154ft.

The GPS altitude looks fairly sensible for here.

Can I ask those who have the Bridge to have a look at what values it gives for QNH?

Technical Support / SOLVED! - Pi 2 Wifi problems with a Nexus 7
« on: May 21, 2016, 04:05:45 pm »
Got a strange problem. I just tried to configure my Pi 2 with the 20160511 software, or at least the software which I downloaded today. Having written the SD card and allowed the Pi to do its thing, I tried to connect using my 2012 Nexus 7...however it wouldn't. It sees the SSID, tries to connect but can't. So I tried another SD card with some older software in the Pi 2, and that worked fine, I could connect. I tried the "faulty" software in a Pi B+ and I could connect to that too. The only combination which didn't work was the new software and the Pi 2. So I tried to connect another tablet and that worked. I tried rebooting the Nexus but that didn't help. I tried forgetting the network and re-connecting, but that didn't help either. The Nexus is the tablet I use in the air so it would be nice to get this working!

What has changed in software versions which means my Nexus can't connect if it's on a Pi 2? Indeed has something changed?

General Discussion / XC Soar free Android software and PilotAware
« on: November 03, 2015, 02:18:22 am »
Spurred on by another thread, I downloaded XC Soar for Andoid on one of my cheap tablets (Asus ME173X) and tried to get it working with the PAW to display traffic. Well, it's not the best software for this purpose, but it works.

1 ) Download XC Soar here:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.xcsoar

while connected to the internet, then connect your WiFi back to the PAW.

2 ) Double tap the display. Select "Config" --> "Devices"
3 ) Choose a position from A to F and select "Edit" on the left.
4 ) Tap the box to the right of "Port". Select "TCP Client" then "Select" on the left.
5 ) Under "IP Address" enter 192.168.1.1
6 ) Under "Port" select "2000"
7 ) Under "Driver" select "FLARM" then tap "OK" to the left.
8 ) The profile should just work, but if it's showing "Disabled", select the new profile in the list and click "Enable" on the left. It should connect and say "GPS fix; FLARM" if you have a GPS dongle on your PAW, or if you're running the PilotAwareAndroid software and have GPS lock on the tablet, once it's connected. If the first profile is the Built in GPS, you might want to disable that, though I don't know if there's a problem leaving both running.

Traffic appears on the map when you are zoomed in to a certain level - if you zoom out, it disappears.

The software should as default display a "FLARM radar" display on the main display when there's traffic. If you double tap it you can get just the radar display on which you can select North Up or Track Up under the various menus, and zoom in or out, up to 10km.

If more than one bit of traffic is displayed you can tap it and it'll tell you the relative altitude and the distance.

I suspect you'll want to download a map and airspace, so you can double tap the main display again, select "Config" --> "System" --"Site Files" --> "Site Files" and select map database and airspace data for your country. Do this when you're connected to the internet though, not the PAW!  :D

If you want height in feet, you can select "Config" --> "System" --> "Setup" --> "Units" and select Preset: British or American.

The rest I'll let you work out for yourself!

G'night!

Actually, just been playing, XC Soar TE is the same software but with a bit neater layout.
