Technical Support / Re: Rosetta "seeking satellites" near Brize Norton
« on: October 09, 2025, 08:24:28 pm »
I have downloaded the track files for that day if they are of any diagnostic use.

They will be if you want to have a look yourself.

Navigate to:

https://playback.pilotaware.com/playback

and upload a file where you saw the problem. I'd suggest you avoid making the file public unless you want to.

Now, with the uploaded file processed, drag the white ball along the timeline. You should see the track you recorded in the PAW, along with the number of satellites you were seeing plus any recorded traffic.

It could also be when the antenna warms up or the Pi itself.

Where is the antenna? Internal to the Rosetta or external?

Have you considered moving the GPS connector to a different USB port?

Can we assume that GPS lock is lost because the Rosetta sees fewer and fewer satellites, or does the coverage just drop full stop?

I can only suggest GPS jamming. As the phone may have access to lots of constellations, it may service or dodge the jamming...

Not sure what constellations the mouse can see...

Are you 100% sure that your ICAO code is correctly set?

Is there a strange setting in your minimum speed for transmission?

Technical Support / Re: Rosetta WiFi not working
« on: September 03, 2025, 11:27:08 pm »

Can I ask - is the inbuilt WiFi on the main Pi board or the separate upper board that carries the antenna female plugs?

I think it is on the main board, the daughter board you are referring to is the P3i radio board IIRC...

Is the unit mounted in an aircraft or loose to investigate at home?

Have you tried running the unit with the SDR disconnected?

If you plug a laptop into the Ethernet port and navigate to 192.168.1.1 can you see the status page? (This may not actually work - a PAW person will need to check this as viable)

On the status page, you will be able to see PSU warnings and the status of the Wifi.

AIUI, Wifi on the Rosetta is on the main Pi board, the Wifi dongle is for iGrid.

I have used a USB voltmeter to troubleshoot SDR problems - it will tell you what the current drain is and if the voltage supplied has dropped in the USB ports due to PSU problems...

General Discussion / Re: Strange Pilotaware tracking outside the UK
« on: August 23, 2025, 10:19:00 pm »
Thanks for the background info but note my friend had no Igrid connection so I'm none the wiser how this flight was tracked and why the datapoints are 2 minutes apart. The ID was 405BE9 departing Thursday 3rd July at 9:06Z.

As far as you know, do classic OGN sites outside the UK receive PAW?

Alan

1. The OGN is not controlled in the same way as the PAW/ATOM network. The hardware is diverse, the software is not automatically updated, and it was in some state of disarray after the FLARM encryption update last year. So there is no simple answer to "Do Classic OGN stations receive PAW?" Yes, if on the right software.

Even if your friend had no iGrid, his unit could still be part of the SkyGRID as seen by another PAW aircraft which could then use its iGrid to pass on your friend's location.

There doesn’t seem much knowledge of or interest in this topic but rather than leave it open I might as well briefly describe my conclusions after some investigation.

Classic OGN groundstations throughout Europe do indeed receive PAW transmissions, and forward them to the OGN servers. The data forwarded is labelled in a way that distinguishes it from the same data received and forwarded by PAW groundstations (which are almost exclusively in the UK).

See 1 above. Some tracker apps will tell you what version of software the "Classic OGN" station is on.

The OGN servers supply data from both sources (and several others) to clients such as the various public tracking websites.  Whether traffic from any particular source is displayed depends on the client

There you go... Unlike the PAW ATOM network, there are various levels of software and reporting on the OGN...

Regarding the odd 2 minute spots on the PAW ground station tracker site, I’m sure Admin could have explained this straight away, but this must result from PAW taking data from the OGN servers for their own purposes and choosing to store only 2 minute samples.  Presumably this is just for statistical info on where PAW is actually used which is fair enough provided they comply with the OGN privacy policy on data use.

As I understand it, the PAW system is run primarily for situational awareness and not tracking and there is a big difference in the philosophy of how they would work. Situational awareness data needs to be up to date and therefore during PAW talks, Keith V. has intimated that any data deemed not to be current enough to use would be discarded. That is the big difference, if you are tracking then a 45 second delay is not a big issue, whereas for situational awareness at higher speeds it is.

You could be right in that your friend data exists to help with unit performance analysis via either Vector or Playback/Groundstations software. I was also told that the reason for the PAW ATOM network was because there was too much latency in the OGN.

There is probably little interest in this because most users have PAW for situational awareness, not tracking. Whilst I occasionally track friends' aircraft, the best device for being tracked internationally is a mode S transponder, and if your friend wants to be tracked as opposed to made aware of other aircraft close by, this is the device to buy...

Technical Support / Re: Wi-fi issues on Pilotaware FX
« on: June 18, 2025, 10:34:08 pm »
Is your home router on the same subnet as the PilotAware fixed address? Does your home router use the 192.168.1.x subnet?

Are the networks you know of on 2.5GHz?

Does your phone have the password for your home WiFi?

Technical Support / Re: Networking on the Rosetta FX for iGrid
« on: June 12, 2025, 11:21:06 am »
I'm reliably informed that the wireless network the FX generates on 192.168.1.x cannot be the same subnet as the Internet device uses for providing Internet access.

Yesterday I changed my mobile broadband box to 192.168.10.x and whilst the network light remained blue, I suspect because indoors I didn't get GPS lock and thus fully functioning iGrid wasn't possible, the FX did download the latest software and successfully install it.

I'll test it it with a mobile Internet box out in the open, and when I do I'll probably be looking to mark this thread as solved, but for now, @Mods, please can we leave it open?

Technical Support / Networking on the Rosetta FX for iGrid
« on: June 10, 2025, 12:26:23 pm »
I'm trying to find out if there is a network issue when using an FX on a Wifi network which is on the same subnet as the FX has to be on for traffic info to SD.

Example - I'm snagging an FX in a flex, using the Wifi in the hangar. The Wifi router is on the 192.168.1.x subnet. The Wifi router's gateway is on 192.168.1.254 in order to avoid a clash with the FX which will need to be on 192.168.1.1 for the traffic info to work. The Wifi router's DHCP range is 50 - 99, so there will also be no clashes.

Does the FX get confused if its own wireless network and the iGrid access are on the same subnet, in this case, 192.168.1.0/24?

When the FX is powered up, ADS-B, P3i and GPS lights all go green. The networking one only ever goes blue.

The wireless connection is on in iGrid, but iGrid remains red in the status.

I suspect that when I used my small wireless dongle/MiFi previously, it all worked because the MiFi is on the 192.168.8.x subnet, that is 192.168.8.0/24

Any thoughts on this, and any network restrictions for me to be aware of?

Technical Support / Re: Permanent mounting of a Rosetta in a C42
« on: June 04, 2025, 12:01:48 pm »
In addition to the 1/4" 'tripod' mount, FX also has 2 x 5mm threaded holes to allow additional mounting options. Just make sure that in both cases the screws you choose aren't too long - they should provide a solid mount without 'bottoming out' in the mounting hole(s).

Mine has 3 x 5mm holes and the 1/4" tripod mount doesn't fit anywhere...

Use the 12V/USB adaptor that PilotAware recommends for use in the ciggie lighter socket?

Head over to playback and use the "groundstations" option for a track log.

Sorry, but I still don’t know what this means.

Visit this URL, if that's a good enough explanation? Fill in the boxes with the correct data. Leave Stations set to all.

Comments like "arp -a" lead me to remind people that we are no longer in the world of Raspberry Pis and soldering irons.  This is now a commercial product sold for a not inconsiderable amount of money, on the premise that it "just works."

This was a thrown away comment to say this it is easy for any device to find out what else is on the network, and act accordingly. Just one line of code.

So if you say:

"Indeed I do and I will check at the weekend, but I would be amazed if SafeSky can “see” PAW simply because it is using the iPhone as a hotspot!"

I work with stuff that can see other stuff even when not on the same VLAN and with the ability to reconfigure network devices wrongly configured.

Very little to do with absence of callsigns, but I am very aware that SE2 and SafeSky, my previous solution, "just works".

Until you look at latency (SafeSky) and RF performance (SE2) - I've got side by side of SE2 and the older Rosetta in the same aircraft on the same flight. Just works... not for me. Ditto looking at SafeSky with aircraft flying over a reference point.

As I understand it, FX doesn't have log files. But I haven't looked at it for 4 months, as that aircraft has been getting fixed. Head over to playback and use the "groundstations" option for a track log.
