Rosetta WiFi not working
« on: September 03, 2025, 07:43:26 am »
Hi there;

Our Rosetta has a problem that I’m struggling to fix.

WiFi connectivity became intermittent then gave up completely, the unit is not visible on available WiFi networks.

I have (as discrete tests):

- Changed the WiFi dongle
- Full software reinstall
- Swapped the Pi board
- Swapped USBs across ports

The unit does not have a current licence.

The lights on the unit appear as expected (solid power, flashing green/red for no licence), but I cannot make it visible on WiFi.

I note the software defined radio antenna mounting is very hot.

Any ideas what to try next please? Is there something silly I am missing?

Thanks for any help

Is the unit mounted in an aircraft or loose to investigate at home?

Have you tried running the unit with the SDR disconnected?

If you plug a laptop into the Ethernet port and navigate to 192.168.1.1 can you see the status page? (This may not actually work - a PAW person will need to check this as viable)

On the status page, you will be able to see PSU warnings and the status of the Wifi.

AIUI, Wifi on the Rosetta is on the main Pi board, the Wifi dongle is for iGrid.

I have used a USB voltmeter to troubleshoot SDR problems - it will tell you what the current drain is and if the voltage supplied has dropped in the USB ports due to PSU problems...

Thanks, I’ll try those things in the next day or two, the unit is loose

Can I ask - is the inbuilt WiFi on the main Pi board or the separate upper board that carries the antenna female plugs?

Thanks

I think it is on the main board, the daughter board you are referring to is the P3i radio board IIRC...

Ok, so I’ve narrowed it down, I can connect to the Rosetta on WiFi when the SDR is not connected, and intermittently can sometimes connect with SDR connected. The SDR is running very hot, to the point where the WiFi module above is itself very hot to touch

However the SDR is not in stock in the PilotAware store

Any ideas from anyone or any of the PilotAware folk how I can breathe life back into this? Seems I’ve narrowed the problem down to the SDR

I’d happily buy an SDR if the PAW crew can supply one please?

Or is it as simple as buying a Noo Elec Neo 2 and stripping the case off, in which case how do I swap the cable across?

Thank you SteveU for the help so far

To close this query, I can confirm that replacing the SDR has resolved the issue, and for purpose of completeness (answering my own question) the antenna plug simply swaps out with a firm click

The only downside is I’ve now gained an additional white LED from the replacement SDR
