General Discussion / Re: Enhancement Requests

Hi Chris,

The BT transmitters will certainly do the job of piping audio from the PAW 3.5mm jack to a BT headset and if you're 'normal', as opposed to me, then it's a great solution. I've got one and they work  :)

My problem is that I will be mounting my PAW behind the panel and it will be less accessible than normal. I will have my PAW powered from a Charge4 USB charger and have the spare port to ensure the BT transmitter is charged but the problem comes after a flight. When the aircraft battery switch is turned off and I walk away from the aircraft then the BT transmitter will still be plugged in to the PAW and the battery will wear down as it has not been specifically switched off. Fast forward a few days and I'll switch everything back on, the USB charger will provide power to the BT transmitter BUT I will actually have to turn it on again........cue clambering beneath the panel which I hope to avoid with a different audio solution.

If I could wire the BT transmitter permanently on then it wouldn't be a problem as it would only work when it's plugged into the USB charger and that would be fine with me. I've had a look at the little box and it's sealed up rather well  :(

If it didn't need switching on again once the battery has worn down then all would be good, but this is not the case.

The BT dongle you linked to earlier would do the job IF PAW audio could be piped through a USB port. Yes, it would mean the loss of a USB port but I could live with that  :)

If that doesn't work then I'm more than happy to buy a Pi 3 with built in WIFI and BT and hopefully get PAW audio through the Pi.

There are now vertical and horizontal filters for known position targets in the latest version of PilotAware too.

Well that's good news, especially for those who use nav programs where there are no facilities to apply filters. It's also good news for those who want to pipe PAW to their EFIS and set filters (I'm yet to see an EFIS where you can get PAW into it and apply filters at the EFIS).

The only thing I might say is that this additional facility needs some 'promotion' as the information on the latest update does not mention this:

This fixes a number of recent bugs including WiFi drops when receiving Aircraft Flight ID > 8 characters
Wifi Drops due to Connected devices going into standby mode
Also includes Code for Weather reception and GDL90 support

What radio do you have? Does the radio share the transponder earth?

I may be going straight down the wrong rabbit hole but the fact that it drops the GPS when you transmit makes me think of a grounding problem. Since the GPS is connected to your transponder then I'm wondering if the PTT ground is somehow interfering with the transponder ground and doing some weird stuff to the GPS via the transponder.

Is your GPS the dongle type or a mouse type?

Also I could hear the traffic warnings but no traffic on SD.

I'll leave the experts to deal with the difficult stuff but what traffic warnings were you expecting from Sky Demon? Unless it has changed very, very recently, SD does not have vocal audio. It will give you a warning tone but it won't tell you there's traffic 300' above, 2 o'clock, 2 kms. I have asked this to be included in SD but had an email two days ago saying they don't know when they're going to do it, even though Tim has said it is going to happen.

With the bad audio it might be worth getting an in-line ground loop isolator (Amazon, eBay etc). They seem to have solved every audio woe that has appeared on this forum.....but that may be a bit of my imagination  :)

Paul, you could always put it forward as an enhancement request?

:) Well, seeing as we're in the right place (Enhancement Requests thread) can we have Bluetooth audio please  :)

I certainly know of no plans to include Bluetooth GPS connectivity at present

That's a shame; I was wondering if BT could be used for audio out  :(

I saw this. You know what I'm thinking  ;D

Edited to add a less clunk version but still robust:

Edited to add even more  :)

Well, I fired up Google and realise that I am probably quite a few centuries out of date regarding the advances with these Pi thingies. Apparently I haven't discovered anything new regarding these TVs and they haven't only just hit the streets  :( but I've learnt a few things. When looking at the official Pi 7" display there is a built-in function to allow you to share the same 2A power supply twixt screen and Pi. So that's a good thing; no extra wires, batteries etc. Most of the boxes into which you can fix the 7" display have decent fixings which would allow the peripheral equipment (GPS & ADSB dongles, antennas etc) to be fitted into the unit securely.

So, my thinking is could this be a reasonable, portable way of displaying the PAW radar display? Obviously you could still have the WIFI dongle to output to Sky Demon etc but as a stand-alone system I think this would have some merit.

Hi Ivor,

According to the Pilot Aware Facebook page it's already on the streets and some people have it or have ordered it.

Any examples of the traffic display for us to see anywhere? I'm afraid Popham would have been a bit of a hike  :(

I don't know at what point our ADSB starts doing its thing but 99.9% of the time we're using MLAT on the ground.

I'm afraid I'm in the dark as to how the actual data fields trigger the transponder to set the SIL. I did get the information below from Trig but this is probably more directed towards someone that knows their arse from their elbow  :)

NMEA 0183 Transponder sends ADS-B data, SIL sets to zero.
C199 TABS Transponder sends ADS-B data in accordance with TSO C199; SIL = 1, SDA = 1.
Trig TN72 SIL 3 Transponder sends ADS-B data in accordance with FAR 91.227; SIL = 3, SDA = 2.

Well, we can't just have this hidden where we can't comment  :)

I think the 80mm display will be very interesting. Shame I won't be at Popham to have a butchers.

Technical Support / Pimping The GPS
« on: May 04, 2018, 07:09:15 pm »
Today's stupid questions (0256 JST  :( ). Is it going to be possible to somehow pimp the GPS output to a Mode S extended squitter to enable SIL 1?

At the moment my plan is to use the GPS output from my MGL EFIS as the position source for a Trig TT21 transponder to enable ADSB Out. As we ALL know ( :) ) this would presently give me SIL 0 and, therefore, cloaking device to certified receivers. Having spoke to the MGL Guru, I am assured their GPS does actually conform to SIL 1 but it would need the paperwork doing before he can turn on the 0s and 1s that would enable the transponder to sense the presence of a pimped GPS signal and switch itself to SIL 1.

According to Trig, the transponder will automatically configure itself to SIL 0 or SIL 1 depending on the GPS 'code' it receives, telling it how good or gooder it is.

I was wondering if there is a relatively easy way for PAW to change the GPS dongle, or whatever else needs to be done, in order to get the proper GPS output signal to an extended squitter to enable SIL 1.

Some might argue this would also slightly mitigate the Sky Echo 2 'threat', as their unit has SIL 1. Of course, it would only affect those using the GPS to a Mode S for ADSB Out but every little helps.....possibly  ;D

Well, I'm awake at some stupid o'clock in Japan, saw these and thought of you  ;D

This would be for your 'normal' arrangement of GA headset without Bluetooth and a wire leading to your PAW 3.5mm jack:

https://www.crazedpilot.com/music-player-adapter-for-pilot-headset-aircraft/

If you don't have a Bluetooth headset but don't want to have a wire into the PAW 3.5mm with a wire, then pop a BT transmitter into the PAW and use this:
