Almost all the interference snags that have made an appearance on this forum seem to come from some form of ground loop making noise in the audio circuit.

Likewise, they seem to have have mostly been solved by the simple inclusion of a ground loop isolator plugged into the circuit.

Try something like this and see if that solves the problem:

This is the D-Sub crimping tool that I have:

https://www.lasaero.com/products/article/Y03IA3J85

You can push the pins into the D-Sub connector if you wish and/or you can use the insertion/extraction tool.....actually more useful as an extraction tool as they push into the connector easily:

I have to admit that I was the same as Ian, believing I was already at pilotaware.com. Yes, I know I just have to look at the address bar and see that I'm not  :)  Maybe put "Please proceed to" above "www.pilotaware.com".

Anyway, I shall now remove that old address from my bookmarks.

If I go to:

http://pilotawarehardware.com

I get a pretty picture and a padlock on the right side. If I click the padlock to unlock I am asked for my user name and password. I have tried to use the same details as here but to no avail.

Is this facility available only to those with a licence or am I able to access the shop even though my PAW is bought but still unused in its box (not because I don't love it but because I'm still in foreign climes)?

Would something like the LM386 amp work?

I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about but have just bought one of these to construct an audio mixer.....thanks Moffrestorer  :)

The LM386 amp that I've bought has an adjustable 'volume' output i.e. voltage, so it might be what you need.

Something like this (many more available from China but this is a UK supplier): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LM386-DC-5V-12V-Mini-Micro-Audio-Amplifier-Module-Board-Mono-AMP-Module-HIFI-L20/142868452981?hash=item21439f9675:g:un4AAOSw5GZbSxGx:rk:4:pf:0

Might have known I was trying to teach egg-sucking  :-\

It was an interesting evening/morning but I think tomorrow will be a bit more of a challenge, with the typhoon moving north over Japan. This was this morning's TAF for our jaunt through Okinawa (Rwy 36). It was bad enough landing but then had to take off again and go to Hong Kong. Glad to say its very pleasant here  :)

Just thought I'd edit this and add a shot of the ACARS report of the weather we grabbed as we went past Okinawa on the way back from Hong Kong today. Probably not ideal as an alternate  :o

Hi Tony,

It's probably worth doing a search of this Forum for the TRT800. I'm sure I remember various problems being experienced with that transponder but I can't remember the outcome or whether there was a solution.

I would do the search myself but have to go and do battle with typhoon number 23 and hope it doesn't get too close to Okinawa tonight  :)

Cheers,

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: What does OGN-R re-broadcast?
« on: September 11, 2018, 06:41:23 am »
Thanks everyone, especially Peter for your comprehensive reply. Much appreciated.

I got to thinking about why an OGN-R station wouldn't re-broadcast PAW data and supposed that it would just get too complicated. Who's to say the aircraft doesn't already see that PAW contact and having an OGN-R station try and overwrite the data being seen by the aircraft would just make a mess (I think).

So, simplifying, an OGN-R station only re-broadcasts Flarm data that it receives locally. Simples  ;D

OGN-R PilotAware / What does OGN-R re-broadcast?
« on: September 10, 2018, 07:58:42 am »
Dear people wot know stuff,

The SkyEcho2 thread on the Flyer Forum raised a question in my tiny brain and I'm sure someone here will know the answer. Gaz mentioned that Turweston had seen his ADSB on their OGN-R and told him they could see him. I think, following his response, that we're both on the same hymn sheet and believe that it was actually the PAW unit part of the OGN-R station that saw him but I just wanted to clarify a couple of points.

Now, I know an OGN-R ground station is based on the PAW box of goodies and like any PAW should be able to see PAW, ADSB and, I presume, Mode C/S. A ground station will also be receiving, as I understand it, Flarm data for the nearby area over the OGN via the Internet. My question is what does that OGN-R ground station re-broadcast to be picked up by nearby P3I capable receivers?

I cannot imagine it will re-broacast Mode C or, at the moment, Mode S as those are bearingless and only based on signal strength. However, the Mode S multilateration is a different animal and I understand the OGN-R stations will be used to re-broadcast Mode S (MLAT) once the system is up and running.

What about P3I and ADSB that the ground station can see? I would imagine that re-broadcasting ADSB wouldn't be too useful as it has such a strong signal that they'll be picked up by a PAW unit anyway but how about P3I that is detected, for instance, 20km south of the ground station and sent to a PAW unit in an aircraft 10km to the north that wouldn't be able to see the southerly traffic (perhaps)?

Thank you, wise ones.

With a 4 AWG cable at 12v your good for 150A or so over 1m before the voltage drop becomes gets to 2%

Maybe 2 AWG just to make sure then  :)

It's okay, I've decided to save weight and use the suppled cable but I'll stick with a decent power supply  8)

Well, in mitigation, I did admit to being a silly old git  :)

No, my comments are certainly not personal, in as much as they are not aimed at any individual but the subject of dodgy power supplies comes up so frequently you really do wonder if anyone reads any instructions whatsoever, or knows how to use the Search function.

You're right though, my theoretical knowledge has improved a thousand-fold but I'm still yet to even connect mine up. I'll probably be on here asking why my iPhone charger isn't working (not really, I've got my Charge4 and some 4 AWG cable, so I should be okay).

I'll go back to thinking of awkward antenna questions.....and audio of course  ;D

Even though my PAW is still in its box and I don't know what I'm talking about, if it were me I'd be checking for a dodgy connection with the 1090 MHz antenna and cables, especially if it is a PAW Classic with the MCX adapter. I base this purely on the fact that it only happens when you're manoeuvring and it is associated with the transponder returns (and the MCX adapters have proved troublesome in the past.....according to these hallowed web pages).

Could we change the title of the thread ?
not strictly relevant I think

Maybe along the lines of "Read the instructions, especially regarding power.......AGAIN".  ::)

The PAW Team should be very glad they don't have a silly old git like me working for them because I think I would have lost it by now. How many times do we read the same, recurring, problems and how many times is the answer "power"?

Now, I have to admit I knew nothing of the vagaries of USB phone chargers and switchable batteries before I started reading this forum and these functions are obviously a thorn in the side of the Raspberry Pi. BUT there's no need to actually have any knowledge of these anomalies if the instructions are followed. I think I even read somewhere a specific note about NOT using USB phone chargers. How difficult can it be to NOT use a USB phone charger, instead of using one and then finding stuff doesn't work?

Glad you guys are more patient than I am  ;D

It also has onboard Bluetooth which could potentially be used for audio out though this hasn’t been developed yet.

But what a fantastic development that would be  ;D ;D ;D
