General Discussion / Re: External antennae on Jodels
« on: July 03, 2021, 07:11:49 am »
Peter,
I totally agree regarding having the antenna external.
You may find that at a distance, you can see a target, but I don't think you are likely to have a mid air with those ones :o. But it will still be partially obstructed if metal or water is placed between the two aircraft. I have seen a PA28 with 1090ES disappear from my PAW as it banked towards me (presenting top of wing to me), and reappear once wings level. I was on the ground and PA28 turned final, no risk in this case, but a good demo of why antenna diversity is a good idea. There is no perfect position for a single antenna, which can only be placed to offer protection in the most likely scenario.

No they are not. Fit antenna under a metal aircraft and the signal will be blocked above the wing.

Don’t understand why you cannot see an auto connect per saved WiFi. Can you see it on your home WiFi?

Other networks set to auto connect can be a pain. If too close to the clubhouse my PAW sometimes flips to the club WiFi.

Is there something called WiFi+ on your tablet. I think this has to be on to enable auto connect.

On your tablet
Go into the settings>Connections>Wi-Fi>ADVANCED>Manage Networks
Select your PAW from the list and ensure Auto Reconnect is ticked.

Note, when testing make sure there are no other Wi-Fi, that it may latch onto.

Is there not a danger that we will install antenna to get the best reception in Vector, a ground station analysis, when we should be looking at Air-Air performance first?

I would not have expected that extreme change, but does show that it is important to tune your twigs.

Cheers

Isn't the sample size for 'mixed up', a bit small to form an opinion? It would imply the days flying was not comparable.

Technical Support / Re: 2x Rosetta both with same issues
« on: June 09, 2021, 11:30:16 am »
Since a new Rosetta has the same issue, you can eliminate the units themselves.
I think you are saying that 2 different 12V Cigarette adaptors have been used? if so then they are not the issue. Personally I am not keen on this method of getting power, but is sometimes the only method.
The Rosetta will have been supplied with a new power cable? if you are using another cable, ensure that it is less than 1m long and better than 20AWG
Cigarette sockets are often poor in making a 12V connection, especially if they have been used in the role for which they were designed. Try using a power pack battery that can supply 5V at 2A, just as a test.
If you reboot the PAW unit, is service restored?

Frank, I think you are missing the reason why Neil is looking at 2 antenna. It is not because of signal strength, but to overcome airframe masking of the targets. Colinear would not resolve that.

The micro USB is one of my pet hates about the RPI versions 1 to 3

There was at some point going to be an alternative socket, but this was dropped.

USB - C is only found on the RPI V4. This in not currently compatible with the PAW software. The power consumption of the V4 is greater than is ideal for a batty powered device.

That's what I did Ian - isn't it? Otherwise I'm confused!
Sorry, I missed that post  :-[

Put the SDR from the classic in the Rosetta?

The SDR does get hot. Try unplugging it and restarting the PAW. See if the power warning goes.
Probably best to contact Support@PilotAware.com.

I would remove the cover and check the antenna pigtail is connected to the SDR module.

Also you have a voltage warning and is currently throttled. Can you confirm that you are using the supplied USB cable and a PSU capable of supplying 2A?

If both are good then it could be a faulty SDR. They can draw a high current when they fail, dragging the voltage down.
