Technical Support / Re: Garmin GPS AT575 with Pilotaware

Not without stopping your GTN650 from working and buying a second GPS. You cannot 'T' it off the lead to the GTN650, unless you pay an engineer to install a certified antenna spliter and second GPS Rx.

You would be far better off buying a USB GPS Mouse.

I cannot find any Garmin product that has used that name.

I suspect it is a GPS Antenna AT575 of which there are several variants. Is there a GPS unit on the panel? if so, you may be able to connect the PAW to that? Otherwise it is a no.

Cheers

Not directly related to PAW, but a similar issue.

This week I had to record a presentation and planned to connect my laptop to my camera. Create a WiFi hotspot on the laptop and connect the camera to it. Tested it at home and all worked well and I was able to monitor the recording and adjust it as needed. At the venue there is no Wifi,  and I do not have GSM in the laptop. When I tried to activate the hotspot previously created, the laptop reported that it cannot see the internet, so failed the Hotspot >:(

Under Windows you can configure this from the command line or install a Microsoft app called 'Hotspot lite' to resolve this issue. I suspect there are other fixes for various OS. Not tried either yet

Never heard of it until today, must have been sleeping.  :D

Is this development good/bad, or of no consequence to us?

General Discussion / Re: Aircrew Traffic Display
« on: April 10, 2023, 07:05:25 am »
Yes, very.
I have mine on a RAM mount on the LHS of panel, close to me and easy to read. SkyDemon also has trafffic but due to tablet size is on RHS of panel and it is not as easy to see traffic through the map clutter. PAW is in the centre on top of coaming. PAW and Aircrew each have a small USB powerpack, and iPad mini uses internal battery topped up on the ground if needed from a third larger USB powerpack. There is no electrickery in the aircraft, even radio has it's own 12v gel battery.

I would not reccoment powering through  PAW. It is not difficult to upset a Raspberry Pi by drawing too much current, or voltage drop due to a iffy cable. Powering the Aircrew through it will compound the problem.

I am asuming the host aircraft is G-RVBH AKA Hex: 4078C4. Very difficult to read on the images.

I can only see one aircraft on the Dynon screen, is there supposed to be a ghost?

Since the Dynon is seeing a ghost, but not a tablet/phone connected to the PAW via WiFi, that would appear to be a Dynon issue. I wondering if the Dynon is displaying two different NMEA sentences for the position of the host aircraft?

Sadly that is a £550+ investment to get out Davis Vantage Vue to connect :-(

Me too. A Charge 4 is planned fit in my restoration, however that is a long way off yet. :-[

There is an aircraft that does just that in our hangar. However it is not fitted and is behind the panel. He only powers his PAW from it and is constantly complaining that it keeps disconnecting from his tablet. I have tested the complete PAW away from his aircraft several times and found no issues when powered off the battery that I use. Unfortunatly it has not been possible to engage with his group to do proper testing and the PAW licence has now expired.
Most cigarette sockets are in a poor condition (both car and aircraft) and in my opinion have no place in the power supply chain for devices providing EC.

Thanks J,
I agree with your assesment of these devices. I have been hinting they should get a Charge2 installed. As it is a licenced aircraft the cost of fitting seems to be the issue. No idea what was quoted, or if they even asked, but it was too much!

24V fag lighter to 5V supply
I thought Anker did one, but it looks like they have stopped all 5V cigarette lighter adaptors, though there are still plenty for sale elsewhere. Many sales are confusing 24W with 24V. They have even pulled all historic manuals. Or are there two Anker companies?
It is quite possible that they are all dual voltage but I would like to see that in print.

Any reccomendations for one that does not generate too much noise?

Cheers
Ian

Hi Alex,
Bearingless targets are something that I have mixed feelings about. As you have correctly sumerised the power of the transponder can have an effect of the guestimate range. That power can be affected by a number of things besides the output power of the transponder, namely quality of instalation and whether the antenna is being blanked by the airframe (both his and yours). I have seen a PA28 passing left to right in front of me disapear from the screen as it banked to head straight towards me. He was less than 1Km away and about 300 feet above decending. That was a red alarm that vanished at a critical time. Thankfully I was standing on the ground at the time watching him, so no brown trouser moment  ;)
The sooner 'Bearingless' target a relegated to the bin the better, but there needs to be near 100% adoption of EC devices or mode S transponder for that to happen.

You may want to emaiL Lee as there is some setup to be done remotely.
