General Discussion / Re: Pilotaware software update
« on: June 12, 2019, 03:15:30 pm »
I can only speak for myself, (having used the present software since Feb '19 or thereabouts when I bought the Rosetta) please don't be  over concerned that the date of the release has slipped a little. We already have a brilliant tool in the 2018 software and though I am very keen to have the new version I for one do not want to apply any pressure re the new release.

Noticed this thread and so I add myself to the PilotAware user List

Lee,
A new SD card sounds a good method to me

Am I missing something on the above post?
No need for messing about with USB sticks just use the browser on your phone to log on to the PAW and download the track and just email to yourself if you want to access the data on say a laptop later, or send in an email to somebody else.

Rob,
Me too exactly as you say.

Deker,
Sorry not to have responded but  have had plenty of fun using Aircrew as you suggested.

Technical Support / Re: Rosetta, power consumption

Roger,

As you figured I powered the PAW from a 5v source. The bank has two USB out ports claiming a 5v/3.4A max
but of course I was only using one port for my trial to see how long it would power the PAW. I never checked the precise voltage.

Hi Roger,

I bought a Rosetta about mid Feb this year and use it with SkyDemon. I already had a Ravpower 10,000mah power bank so decided to use this to power the Rosetta. Since then the Ravpower bank has worked without problem and at end of March I decided to see how long it would work (powering the Rosetta) from full before going flat.

So 29 Mar out flying for short flights but leaving the Rosetta plugged-in even when not flying it was on for 5.5 hours, from arriving to leaving the aircraft for the day.
A few days later an 'on' time of 1.5hours was added. Again a few days later the Ravpower was used to keep the Rosetta running for a trip to France and back 3hrs.
Finally the SkyDemon lost location data on another day (18 April) after a further hour of taxing and flying which I figured was a power problem and though I managed to start SkyDemon navigating for the landing I concluded that the power pack had not enough power to continue faultlessly.

Whilst disconnected the Ravpower bank was left in my hangered aircraft. When I was using my Ipad (a subset of the hours) the time was split between having my Ipad Mini 4 hardwired to my intercom for SD speech and latterly using a bluetooth dongle plugged into the intercom. Generally I would get to the aircraft, plug in the Rosetta and then do the walk round etc, listen to the ATIS and call for taxi so the Ipad was not connected wirelessly until I was about to taxi. The overall hours on for the Rosetta were determined by analysing the trk data using 'Aircrew'

So there you have it 10,000 mah = 11 hours powering the Rosetta. Of course nobody wants to run with the 'tank' empty
so 10 hrs would be more conservative for a piston engine bus driver.

I have now bought an identical Ravpower bank to keep as a fully powered spare.

Good luck with your project -  it sounds exciting.

Thanks for the replies, but did the conspicuity code 'B' come from the other aircraft which presumably therefore has out of date software?

A few days ago I flew past Bembridge Mar 18  at 1101 hrs and had a GPS contact nearby which subsequently showed as #undef# B when I played back the trk data using AIRCREW. Have I got  the old PilotAware software as B code is not used now?

I purchased Rosetta  about a month ago and I am fairly sure I have lastest software. The Quick Start Guide was dated December 2018. I can report back on software date after visiting the aircraft. Any thoughts in the meantime?

Sorry if this is not the place to post this particular question, but there is info on the Code definitions above

Mariko,

Thanks for posting the very interesting article, you did well to find it.

I can see there is nothing further to be done with traffic having a Mode C transponder.

I am looking forward to the new software giving the position of mode S traffic.

Vince,
I see, so Ben's reference to 'range' is how far away he can see (with PW) the ground station at Blackbush?

Ben Smith,
Excuse me from being slow to catch on, are you saying that in your glider (with Flarm presumably) you also pick up PW traffic so long as you are in range of a PW-OGN station?

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Hypothetical question

Peter,

Thanks for the helpful explanation.

I am SkyDemon user since it became available but I have only recently bought PilotAware so I have some catching up to do.

Integrating PW information into my cockpit mental attitude will no doubt take some time, but having a separate PW radar display running all the time is something I am considering.

I was flying past Bembridge today and my Radar display showed GS-OGN1 but the site seems to be referred to as PWEGHJ on the map showing transmitting Glider Stations. Can I have an explanation please?
