Technical Support / Re: Wi-FI failure

I’ve been on hols with 4 of the Grandkids for a week

Ah, I can see how the brain isn't necessarily focused!  ;)

Do you not have a Windows PC you can try to format the card with?

Another option is to buy a pre-written SD card. Or get someone who lives near you to try it. Where do you live?

I think you're mixing up your dongles, Peter. The RTL2838 is the SDR (radio) dongle interface chip (with the R820T being the tuner chip on the radio dongle).

The one you want is RT5370.

I'm wondering if the new version of the format tool (v5?) does what we want it to do and doesn't try to be too clever? The older version (v4?) had a specific question on how you wanted to format the card. Maybe v4 could be made available on the website (if it isn't already) so that it would remove all ambiguity from the process?

On all my PIs from the 2 onwards, I've used something like this:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32860853389.html

There's a thought that the 3B+ uses more power and gets hotter, and that the 3B is better in this regard. Indeed, I read a post on the Stratux board saying as such, and the Stratux people invariable use fans in their cases.

The low power SDR won't keep the PI much cooler but should stay cooler in itself.

Did it show P from the beginning? It might have been uplinked MLAT to start with then, as a PAW user, came into direct range?

Or does anything uplinked show P anyway as it's being received through the bridge?

So ball back in PaW court to look for a workaround?

If Sky Demon can't stop the iPad switching off the Wifi to the app when it's in the background, I'm pretty sure that PAW, running on a completely separate device, won't be able to!

Get another tablet and run them side by side...

While maybe not being consistent behaviour between Apple devices, I'd have thought this was expected behaviour. When an app is put in the background, it'll eventually be stopped from using up battery and comms resources, so its Wifi access will be cut off. Personally I'd have thought that putting the app in the background would cut off the Wifi access from it fairly quickly, so 5 minutes is quite a long time to have a background app still communicating over Wifi!

A similar thread on here notes that the PI socket is a four pole socket, if you use a three pole plug in there, often the audio will be very low. If you use a four pole plug to the correct plug on the other side, all is well. Well, that's what someone else found.

Could the charge state of the iPad be the cause of the throttling? The amount of current drawn by the iPad can vary.

Do you have any sort of phone charger or anything you can use? I find most mains power supplies work fine, including a Poundland one.

Can never have too many GPSs! You can now start using another Pi and build something else GPS based for playing around.

What about those of us with Mode C transponders?  :D

Well, I am pleased to say my collinear antenna works. I haven't compared it yet to my spider (and then a spider that I'll build that is the same as Alan's) but my maximum range detection so far is 208.4nm, which I don't think is too bad.

Woohoo (noted 220nm "record" above). Told you a colinear was better than a quarter/half wave...  ;D

It's all quite exciting but maybe I just need to get out more  ;D

Welcome to the geek side! You'll be happy here. ;D

I get it myself when I fly faster - I think it's because the pressure in the cabin drops. If the cabin pressure differs from the Mode C return, it probably defeats the filter. I believe the new software to be released later this month has further refined Mode C filters.
