Technical Support / Re: Pi 2 Wifi problems with a Nexus 7

Hi Paul

Sorry to sound like an old record but are you sure that the power supply and lead you are using is giving 5.25V and 2Amps to the Pi. The lack of this accounts for a very high percentage of drop outs. If this is OK then it needs further comment.

Gerry

Thanks for this post. let us know how you get on. I hope many more will tell us what they are doing so that we can sort the good from the bad and even get some standard installations

Hi Vic

You are absolutely correct. Just cutting the antenna in half gives an improvement and if you tune it properly and put it outside the aircraft the reception is great. However you will then limit the data you receive by setting the height in SkyDemon etc so do use the gain the you have just gained as it were.

However us engineers like to get it right so I have an optimised external antenna.

Thanks for this post.

Perhaps a shared PAW being used in many school aircraft. With the reg being changed but the ICAO code not.

In my experience 3M is long enough and the attenuation is acceptable. You are correct that the connectors are SMA for P3I.

Technical Support / Re: Radio inteference
« on: May 27, 2016, 09:35:24 am »

It is very important that the supply used to power the Raspberry pi is stable, capable of providing 2A and does not create a significant amount of radiated noise either through radio interference or induced noise into the primary power source. This can affect other  electronic equipment in your aircraft particularly noticeable in the radio.
For this reason, it is recommended that the Raspberry pi is powered from a good quality portable power charger such as the Anker range of units. Cigarette lighter voltage converters can be used but they must be of good quality and capable of  delivering a constant 2A. Beware of running additional consumer items off the cigarette lighter voltage converter as this may reduce the power available for PilotAware and cause the Raspberry pi to reset. If there are any problems with your PilotAware unit then first check that you are using a reliable power supply and a good quality 20ASG cable. This is the commonest reason for failure of the unit experienced to date by far.

If you are operating an EASA aircraft or you want an EASA approved power supply for PilotAware certified units can be bought from www.charge4.co.uk.

Technical Support / Re: Classic Configuration documentation
« on: May 27, 2016, 08:02:19 am »
My PilotAware Classic arrived, I followed the instructions and other the forgetting to set the FLARM interface of Sky Demon to 6000 it worked out of the box. Many thanks, great work...
I have now worked out where everything can reside (but not installed) in my Arrow IV and a couple of questions have arisen, that I would appreciate some advice on.

1. Does it matter if the ASD-B in aerial is located horizontally or vertically (I have mine horizontally and it seems to work fine, commercial stuff up to 40K feet no problem), but thought I better check?
2. Where can I find some documentation about configuration of the Classic? The PAW introduction document initial page has settings for such things as Mode-S separation and Mode-S detect and I have just taken the defaults but would like to understand more. Also there are other pages on 192.168.1.1. page but again I can't seem to find any documentation. Would like to know what I would be looking at if(when) I go there.
3. Info on the Audio output also seems to be absent or again have I just missed it?

If I have missed the obvious please accept my apologies, if not then any guidance/pointers would be very much welcome.

Hi Graham
We are working on the updated documentation which should be available next week. This will fix the original documentation and update for the changes that we have made. In the meantime information on antennas can be found at pilot aware.com

Thx

General Discussion / Re: Is a GPS dongle needed?
« on: May 23, 2016, 11:29:34 am »
Hi Tim

Yes you do need a GPS with PilotAware. The collision aware app is no longer supported. It replaces the GPS in the tablet. whilst the GPS in the iPad tended to be OK this was not the case with all tablets. also it allows users to use cheaper  tablets without GPS even the very inexpensive Kobo used by hang glider and paraglider pilots for their good operation in full sunlight using XC Soar.

It is not possible to use the tablet GPS. The PilotAware classic now comes complete with a usb GPS dongle and you can also buy a remote GPS on a lead that can be located on the coaming whilst the PiotAware unit is located elsewhere.

Thanks Woody

Its early days yet but soon there will be 500+ P3I transmissions for you to look out for as well as the ADSB stuff.

Let us know how you get on

Ah, great, thanks. I've managed to get it to connect now using battery power on both devices, but the connection is very unreliable and Sky Demon keeps saying that the connection has been lost.

The Asus 173 remains connected with no apparent problems.

Hi Paul
If you are now using battery on both devices what were you using before

I was just wondering whether rear parcel shelf would work but that I suspect that is shielded upwards by metallic wing tanks and downwards by metal covering panels

Quite so and forwards by two bags of water (you and your passenger, I'm not being rude its just thats how physics see you as far as radio wave propagation is concerned) and a solid lump of engine in front of that . Although the rear parcel shelf  looks like a good place logistically its probably the worst place as far as the radio is concerned. Best thing to think about is water and metal bad, a good view of the outside good.

Hi Bob

I am assuming its Bob. Good to see you got it working in a trice. I would get a battery pack as this provides a nice continuous supply. Thats why I do in the Sportscruiser and it works very well gets about 5 hours duration.

General Discussion / Re: Operational documentation
« on: May 17, 2016, 07:16:44 pm »
Hi Paul

We will be producing the operational documentation for Pilotaware Classic and will publish these soon. How to configure SkyDemon will come from SkyDemon its pretty intuitive and they do have some very good content on You tube. If you as a specific question on what you want to do then I am sure there will be lost of advice coming from the guy's who have already done this on this forum
