Hi Chris

Yes you do as this will be a separate incidence of PilotAware. As Lee said you will need a Bridge to run it and this comes with a first year Licence.

Technical Support / Re: Installing 20160820
« on: August 21, 2016, 08:39:47 pm »
I'll put my hands up to this one. Clumsy words in the instructions. What it means to say is

"To make software download easy in this instance or in normal use for that matter where an internet connection is not available, from this software release 20160820 new software is embedded so that future new releases will be able to be upgraded via a pen drive memory stick. To do this you will for the next release, be able to upgrade a file from the PilotAware.com website onto a Pen Drive memory stick. This will be a PilotAware.pgp file."

Try this

Remove the WI-FI dongle from the Pi to ensure the use of the wired interface.
 Connect your Pi to your home network.
 Power up your Pi.
 From your PC access your router connected client page, to discover the IP address allocated to your Pi
 From a machine connected to your home network, connect to your Pi at the IP address indicated on your router page
 Click the Updates button - Click Check button, wait a moment - Click the Install button wait until it says Installation Complete.

If that doesn't work wait until you get back to Blighty. Others have downloaded successfully so perhaps its a victim of Brexit.

Only Joking

Another thought are you in rural rural France with low broadband speeds?

Technical Support / Re: LX Flarm Mouse

Hi Chris,

I'm interested to hear that you are looking at decoding FLARM signals by using a Flarm Mouse - would the above mentioned unit be suitable? If so, how would the total power requirements look like? I see that the Flarm Mouse is looking for a 3A connection, the Pi needs a 2A connector so that excludes the use of a battery pack, correct? At the same time, assuming the need to use an onboard power sockets, are there any thoughts of taking the Flarm Mouse connector and 'adopting' it to ensure that cable can connect to the Pi providing that with power as well, coming from a typical cigarette lighter socket? Or are we looking at getting our own soldering irons out?

The Flarm Mouse runs from 12V so would not be run from your power block as the Pilotaware is. Also I see that the power is
36mA not 3A. It doesn't transmit after all so won't want much power.

Mouse Spec
Power supply
Power input 6-18V DC
Consumption 36mA at 12V, without flarm indicator

Secondly, what are your thoughts on cabling and space on the top of the glare shield? My thoughts would be to secure the units under the seats, out of sight but use antenna extenders to place these in an area where they have decent views outside - would this be possible?]Secondly, what are your thoughts on cabling and space on the top of the glare shield? Yes this is great idea that lots of folks have been doing. For my SportsCruiser I have all the bits installed behind the dashboard, powered from a hidden Anker cigarette lighter USB PSU which is perfect. The antennas are external via 2 metre cables and the GPS is remote located on top of the dashboard. I have a USB extension cable so that I can update the software via a memory stick and finally a 2 metre audio cable for the voice alerts. Works great 30Km+ for the PilotAware signals and 200K+Km for the ADS-B signals.

I wish I had a Trig or Funke transponder then I could simply connect to that and have ADS-B out but I have a Garmin transponder to which I cannot connect :-(. Wont make that mistake on my next build as all the above plus a FLARM Mouse to see the gliders must be the most comprehensive EC set up available.

Don't forget if you drill holes in the aircraft you will need a minor mod from your licensing authority.

Cheers

Unfortunately I learnt today that my aircraft G-MOOV will not now be available on the day so I need to look for an alternative if I am to make it. Disappointing as I set it up. Sorry

Hi GrimShadow
Did you unpack the zip file. You need to download the contents not the folder itself

Hi jacks
Have a look at the post on August 02 2016 under known good hardware
This will give you the latest parts to use.
It's not much cheaper building it yourself that buying a built and tested unit that comes with a waranty though

The only problem with mine is my power supply as the USB charger tends to come out of the charger plug on the instrument panel if there is excessive vibration e.g. during take-off. I haven't found a charger that fits properly yet! Not a PAW problem as such and if charger pushed back in then PAW powers up without problems anyway. My solution is to have Skydemon on a phone connected via the PAW and Skydemon on ipad running with its own or my other external GPS so that if I loose power to the PAW, I have GPS feed to the other Skydemon device.

Hi Bill

By far the best cigarette lighter charger that I have found at a reasonable price is the Anker Power Drive 2 Model 2310. It fits my socket very well without being loose. Perhaps its your socket. These are available from eBay at about £8.00. If you buy one and fit the Powerdrive 2 into it and hide it behind your dashboard it makes an inexpensive 12V to 5.2V converter

A tablet with the associated software would be additional expense for me and a device i don't need

I thought that you said in an earlier post that you use an IPAD and RunwayHD, so adding these to the cost is surely not at all fair in your cost roll up comparison

I fly an Europa with a AVMAP EK V as my main GPS display and I also had the PilotAware running with a GPS Dongle and therefore providing the GPS position information and traffic alert to RunwayHD on an iPAD.

Hi Julian

I think that you have answered this yourself. Folks already have the tablet and navigational software so should not be bought into the price mix. If you buy F*LARM you will not get PAW which will become a de facto standard as we move forward.

However the choice is obviously yours. The PAW price in the equation is £159.99 plus VAT to pull it all together. Sill great value we think?

Also
When we do range testing with perhaps 2 or more in the aircraft I just remember the last 2 digits of the wifi address which works a treat. Otherwise Pete is right I have my own PAW permanently installed
Just hit the master and it boos up every time
