I’ve been using one of these for over a month now.
Dirt cheap and it drives the PAW and it’s 4G dongle without and power supply issues.
Wired in under the panel and freed up my cigar lighter socket.
The circuit is fused of course and I can pull that to reboot the PAW tho TBF I have had to do that for a long while.

This is a good question, similar to mine which was being able to see live where the traffic was coming from. When looking at the traffic page when flying we are presented with a big list of the traffic and their respective distances etc. To analyse where that traffic is coming from, PAW antenna, 1090, ATOM, iGrid, it would be great to have an additional column with the 'source' listed. My recent efforts to find the performance of my newly located antenna was made difficult as I didn't know where a particular contact was derived, so I didn't know what was actually picking the traffic up. I ended up with everything but the 1090 disconnected, disabled so I could see how that was performing, the column I'm suggesting would mean it was easy to see that information live at any time.
Maybe not possible........

Thanks Paul, I'll have a look at a 4G dongle with wifi.

I've still got my wifi dongle from when I had an earlier Raspberry Pi without an internal one, so I'll put that back when I get a 4G dongle with Wifi.

So now I have to ask what is 'throttling' and how will I know it is happening?

Thanks Paul, I was avoiding having anything else connected to the PAW by wifi aside from my two SD screens.
Assume that isn't an issue with this set up?

I set the PAW to hook up to the dongle on the set up screen?

Though I have to ask if everything is working why don't I leave it as it is?

Although the Anker can have two sockets and suggest two power feeds I imagine drawing two supplies from it will degrade the amount of power for the all important PAW unit.

On another thread I've been warned about powering my dongle from the PAW USB unit but after 6 months of using it it seems fine.
Just researching how do not do that on another thread however.

My power supply to the PAW unit has been changed a few times and the latest seems the dogs kahuna, link below.
It's a AINOPE 4.8A, 2 x 2.4A

Avoiding the radio hook up:

I have the 3.5mm socket on my headset fed by my second SD screen, an old iPhone 5 which has a 3.5 audio output.
One male 3.5 to 3.5 cable, bingo.

This presents the SD audio of the PAW traffic info along with the usual SD warnings.
It also allows phone calls to my headset from my iphone hard wired, £5 a month sim, Lebara.
I also use a Lebara £5 sim in my 4G dongle.

This is a great advantage as the bluetooth running on the headset runs the batteries down very quickly.
Obviously you need a headset with a 3.5 jack for the in/out, Lightspeed Zulu.
A second old phone, I have a few of them, and a sim with a subscription, all a bit messy I know

Good luck with your endeavours. The advantage of the handy 3.5 plug is you can pull it out in a busy circuit when the Irish lady is getting very excited.

Thanks for all the feedback.

The traffic MODE column above shows traffic at up to 800km away so I figure that's coming through either the ATOM or the dongle.

I messed with the 1090 extension cable and things were better so I bought a good quality RG58 cable that doesn't seem to have made any odds, the old one was a flimsy one. My hangar mate re-appeared again the other day when flying together so all I have atm is ok.

Dongle reception; metal aeroplane under a metal panel, a dongle in my son's fibreglass plane even was much better with the pad antenna. The Dongle is the types that look like a zip drive.

How do I power the dongle externally but still have it giving data to the PAW unit via the USB?

406436 is my number. I'd still like the PAW signals to look a little better so aircraft don't disappear and re-appear when close. Going to try the old antenna on the panel to see if it has a better view out the front than the external BNC connected metal one under the belly, under the rudder pedals, below the 0-320 which is a big lump of obscuration of course.

Thanks for the replies. Didn't appear to be any problem with the power, though I'm not sure how that would manifest itself. Isn't the wifi link the first thing to drop when the power is too low?

I'm going to have a look at the antenna connection/cable etc today.

I've got a 4G cellular dongle plugged into the Classic on a USB. The Dongle has an external pad antenna connected by two cables.
It's signal to start with was really consistent but it seems to be dropping out a bit lately. Works better across the channel than here.

It would be really good to see where the traffic is coming from?......maybe an extra column on the Traffic Page showing where each contact is coming from?

Currently I can have a screen full and I don't know what's working and what isn't, what's coming from where.
Antenna, ground station, Atom, iGrid.....

Not much going on on the forums, does that mean all is well with everyone?

Being a bit lazy here as lots of stuff to do so not trawled through to find the answers myself. Thought the enlightened can probably answer quickly.

Flying the other day it was very quiet so not many aircraft to fly near to see how the PAW classic (new Rasp Pi upgrade) external antennas and 4G dongle (external antennas) was really performing.

I had some indications that suggested not all was well when i was looking at the different PAW pages using a browser:

Yes it's a SE though I will check the configuration and have a more in depth chat with the pilot.

I can't get the Vector to work ATM. Tried on two browsers and 2 PC's and a phone, is it only me?

Does anyone have any more information for why this happens?

My hangar mate's plan is always 'North Up' for me on my PAW though if I look at him on any of the radar apps he's pointing the way he's going. As he's invested in his SE he just shrugs when I tell him.

Is there something that can be done to the SE, or is it something that should be directed to the SE community?

It's not a big deal but it maybe allied to the fact he does disappear now and again. Yesterday for much of the time he wasn't showing as ADSB, just as a TXP bearingless target, his relative height looked right. Then while he was in the circuit he showed up, North up tho.

Wasn't £24 but £32, ordered a different one than I first looked at. Chris is trying to find a Wifi connectable one. This is plugged into the PAW.

Update on the use of a 4G dongle with external antennas.

Flew 10 days ago, 120 nm trip up to 4000' with no drop out.

Dongle was Huawe £24, antenna was £4.50 (any old chinese), Labara simcard £5 a month (£2.50 for first three months). 30 day contract (pay monthly).

Didn't see any negative issues that Peter warned about below but it was only one day out and it wasn't really a flying day, well there wasn't much traffic to look at. Everything that came up looked legit and tracked nicely. Nothing near me apart from when I was near Derby and they have a ground station so I was getting the traffic from that (I suspect) That was cool as Derby said 'you seem to be just a mile or so north of our downwind for runway X' which was neat.
