General Discussion / ARF Aerial Socket fitted incorrectly.
« on: December 04, 2015, 09:17:29 am »
Took my PilotAware unit to Telford for a test with known working units.

No transmit or Receive from my ARF.

At home had a look at the aerial and socket.

I had fitted the socket with a spacer and the supplied lock washers.

Unfortunately this meant that the aerial could not be screwed far enough on for the center conductor to connect.

Removed the thick lock washer so that there is a gap between the aerial plug and the socket securing nut when the aerial is fitted.

Need a good flying day now to test again.

Not happy with weather when I wanted to fly, so PAW in window at Home today.

Weather permitting.

Wombleton, Eddsfield, Market Weighton, Sherburn, Ripon, Bagby, Wombleton.

Unit has original ARF, will be transmitting but only expecting to receive ADS-B. No ADS-B out.

New aerial arrived today. The box under the unit is the packaging the aerial arrived in!

Plugged into dongle. Needs some support to stop it rotating, relieve stress on dongle. (Other than the blue tack.)

Can see traffic 50 mile South of my farm.

Thank you for the replies but  I am looking for the aerial which comes with this dongle;-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Micro-USB-DVB-T-TV-Stick-Dongle-with-Antenna-for-Android-Tablet-Smartphone-/371360535367?hash=item5676d01347:g:BK0AAOSw3ydViXuD

i.e The aerial plugs directly into the dongle. Cannot find the aerial has a separate item.

I do not want to buy another dongle, just the aerial

I purchased this item from eBay.

DVB:

Works very well but the long cable is untidy.

I am sure I have seen photo's of PilotAware with an aerial plugged directly into the DVB dongle.

Searched the forum and the web so far with no success.

Anybody found an aerial that I can plug in and loose the cable?

I am taking my PilotAware unit with me to Telford.

It is an original Build with the ARF transceiver modified to get rid of the pigtail and include the Baro.

Works great sat on my window ledge picking up commercial Traffic.

Bit remote here so not yet had chance to fly near some other units to see if the ARF is working.

I know Lee tested some units at the LAA rally but he could be inundated this time.

Would be good if other units were in the area so that we might see each other.

Can 4 working PAW be placed in the corners of the venue so that we can try our units?

I am planning on having the unit switched on in the car on the way to Telford, I know buildings and trees are in the way but I might get lucky and pick up the transmission from another unit.

Thank You Ian,.

New software loaded with no problems.

Took 3 hours for previous version with lots of SD card problems.

Just one thing, recommend deleting all previous versions from download file, I accidentally picked the wrong file once.

Hello Lee.

No only the GPS Dongle.

XCSoar display can be either Track Up or North Up.

Change it to North Up and the display is now stable.

If I get a chance to fly  I will set it to Track up. That should be O.K. in a  moving aircraft.

Bob.

Hi Bob

Are you supplying PAW with more than one GPS source by any chance, eg usb/gps and collisionaware, this may explain the aerobatics ?

Thx
Lee

O.K. Finally got both devices working.

The display on the iPhone with Runway HD is stable.

The display on the Hudle with XCSoar is jumping about has though the aircraft is doing aerobatics?

The PilotAware unit is stationary in the window.

Not a problem with the PilotAware unit.

Need to try in the car or flying i.e. with the unit moving.

Really struggling today, Over an hour and unit still not working.

3 attempts so far to download new software.
Had "Dos" error think that is due to picking wrong option when formatting SD card, there is a thread somewhere about that.
Now the PilotAware will not start at all, Power switches off after a few seconds, think there is another thread discussing that problem.

So. Remove SD card. Reformat Full OverWrite. Format size adjustment ON.

Extract 39 Items = 15 files and copy on to SD  card.

Put SD card in PilotAware and try again!

Downloaded wrong version yesterday with no problems!

Hello Lee,

I had the pilot Aware displaying on my iPhone O.k.

Switched on the Hudle, started running XCSoar, nothing showing.

Switched off the iPhone, Hudle started to display traffic.

Switched iPhone back on, NO FLARM DATA.

I will not be using both devices when flying but was interested in the different displays.

I was assuming that I might need to alter some settings.

I have uploaded the latest software.

Can not find the reference now but the email suggested that you could see the PilotAware output on more than one device?

Works O.K. on iPhone with Runway HD.
Works O.K. on Huddle with XCSoar.

But not on both devices at the same time?

I have the USB dongle fitted and working.

Have I misunderstood the content of the email or do I need to change some settings somewhere?
