Password for PAW SSID?
« on: June 19, 2016, 10:08:00 am »
Is it possible to add a password for when you connect your device to your PAW WIFI?

I guess a) it will help prevent inadvertent connection to someone else's paw if more than one are in use at an airfield at the same time ( yes I know you've asked to memorise the last few characters of SSID  to help prevent this). And b) it will help prevent any malicious idiots from easily hacking in and changing your config without you knowing either at the airfield or at home if you have it on. 192.168.1.1 is an easy ip for folk to guess at for access to the server side of things.

Thanks
Neil.

If this is a fear people have would it not be more practical to just have the option to Hide your SSID. That way no one will see you but so long as you have set to join your own PAW wifi automatically and have never joined any of your local colleagues wifi then you will always only get your own apart from possibly the local field network if you are still in range of it.
That way even if you forget to log onto the PAW network during setup as soon as you are out of range of any other known network it will automatically pair with the PAW.
I hasten to add that this in not something I would be concerned about and am not necessarily advocating it except as a simpler solution if required.

Given the wireless power is turned down low compared to a home wifi I would not be too concerned. It would be interesting to see the effective range in free space.

I was doing a presentation at an airfield the other day and had left a second one in my car about 40' from the clubhouse where I was talking.

I couldn't connect to it, I could only connect to the one I had with me in the clubhouse.

Would still prefer it to be pwd protected if it's not a huge job to do. At my local field you sometimes park quite close to public areas.

Hiding an SSID is far from fool proof and simple packet logging apps will find it in seconds. But yeah, the risk really is minimal I guess that someone would be there with the skills just to mess anyone with a PAW up.  ;D

Clearly it's all about risk vs effort to do. If it's a big job then fair enough we're not talking high risk but if it's straight forward then why wouldnt the risk be mitigated or at least let users decide if they add a password or not on their own PAW? ...as long as there is some way to reset when the eventual phone call comes to say " I've forgot my password" doh!  :o

Cheers

This could be done, but would need to make it optional.
I tried this out and there is no way for XC-Soar to provide a password to the WiFi

So I guess a checkbox + password

Not another password to remember..... I agree if a password is a must have for some, Please make it option as it will be something ells to add to my checklist !!!! more buttons to press before we go fly.
