iGrid sees more than Atom?
« on: February 17, 2025, 05:41:25 pm »
Does anyone have any insight into an issue raised by someone on this forum:
https://forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=135995

Specifically the pilot is receiving Flarm via iGrid but not via atom when the iGrid drops out

My first insight would be to ask on the right forum, and not a forum where people are stuck in a tedious loop with "Track up/North up" crap which pollutes every thread it can.

Ground station (ATOM) infrastructure in the region of Challock took a hit when Barham's Mill Farm, a strip just to the South, shut in November and the ground station there had to be removed. I was based there.

He may be just North of Headcorn but the station at Challock is over the hill and on the slight North facing slope over the crest of the Downs. It may not be line of sight, so is obscured.

Therefore all FLARM data will have to come via iGrid.

HTH.

Second point with Skydemon and iGrid. Unless one is clever, in which case if one is having to ask, one is not, keep it simple, and have a cheap device to provide Internet access, and another to do SD and connect to the PAW Wifi. Yes, a clever device can do both, but it involves either juggling to be successful or plain frustration.

Indeed - that forum is special!

He had a green symbol on the ground station

The guy has a point and I've noticed the same. I'll have a good iGrid connection and see loads of contacts. My iGrid connection gets lost (just as a function of no 4G due to poor coverage) and, despite seeing 3 green ATOM stations I still don't see a fraction of the traffic that was available on iGrdi a few seconds before.

It's as if the ATOM station(s) is not broadcasting all the stuff that it sees over the Internet. As I write this, my ATOM station is seeing 5 gliders sat on the ground, some 62 nm away. They are Flarm contacts and rebroadcast (r). I have no idea if my ATOM station is broadcasting those gliders for others to see, over the PAW frequency, but I bet if I was over my house and had iGrid I'd see them. if I didn't have iGrid I'm really not sure I would.
