Sounds like things went well.

Glad to hear it!

General Discussion / Re: Forum "noise"
« on: November 26, 2015, 02:15:23 pm »
I have updated myself with the forum every week or so, sometimes more often, since the LAA mag article was published, and have built myself a PAW, gradually updating it as first the barometer and then the external GPS came along.

I have to agree that I keep seeing the same questions being asked over and over again.

When I built my PAW and hooked it up to my Android SD I did have some of the issues that people regularly report  ???, but having read the threads on the forum and studied the documentation provided I worked through the issues myself  ;D - and felt more satisfaction for having done so...  8)

Admittedly I work in IT, but on the software side, not the hardware building or configuration/integration sides, so I was working as a general Joe Public type!

...the internal disco lights flicker away relentlessly...
My PAW's Pi flickers its lights while booting up and then they go out and stay out...
 ???
Just wondering if all is well with the unit in question.

Which lights ?

The Red should always be on, this indicates a good power supply
the Green should flicker during boot, then remain off, occasionally you may see single flickers, but the majority of the time it should stay off
Thx
Lee
Once booted and running I get an occasional green flicker and no red at all.
All appears to be running fine.

General Discussion / Re: USB-GPS Working in PilotAware

We have 3 antennas on a PAW and really all of them need it  :)
Can you expand on this, please?
All ADS-B? All P3I? 2 + 1? 1 + 2? Does the GPS figure in the count?
If some are interconnected how are they linked together?
Ta!

General Discussion / Re: Newbie problem with wifi and Skydemon..
« on: October 26, 2015, 03:54:05 pm »
From my experience with Android devices and SkyDemon, Butterfly connect problem is usually due to not being connected to the PAW WiFi access point when hitting the GoFlying button.

If you have other WiFi access points around eg home wifi network then you Android tab might be picking this instead of PAW.
This gets me every time when I'm at home playing with PAW!  :-[

You need to go to settings > Wireless and network > WiFi Settings on your Android device and select the PilotAware network connection in the Wi-Fi Networks list!

I notice Lee hasn't contributed here so I'll start by saying I am totally unofficial and I'm definitely not trying to put words in his mouth... :-X

With all alternative hardware suggestions it should be borne in mind that the availability of the physical hardware is just part of the picture. That hardware has to be able to physically/electrically interface with the RPi in some way (GPIO / USB) and, equally as importantly, there needs to be suitable driver support so the RPi operating system can actually communicate with the hardware.

How you discover whether such software support is available, and where one would actually find it (other than 'somewhere on the internet'), I wouldn't know.

The driver issue is the reason that we have a limited selection of WiFi dongles, DVB dongles etc. that work with the RPi / PAW, and also why the RPi 2 is not supported.

Having said all that - keep the suggestions flowing - knowledge is power!

General Discussion / Re: FLARM
« on: October 20, 2015, 12:51:31 pm »
In USA this is a big thing as ADS-B will become mandatory in 2020.
Does that mean it will get cheaper?  ;)

Probably the wrong forum to be asking the following on, but I'll have a go...
Given that ADS-B seems to be inextricably linked with Mode S transponders at present, does that mean the US is going mandatory mode S, or are they breaking the mode S / ADS-B link and we might be able to start buying/using simple (cheap?) ADS-B transceivers?

Logically, if all aircraft have ADS-B then mode S is irrelevant. Indeed, ADS-B is better than Mode S as it is not dependent on Secondary Surveillance Radar installations to make it 'work' (assuming S works only when interrogated like A and C does, and ADS-B transmits just on a slightly varying timeout).

Or should I sit down and shut up? :-X

Maybe we need to engage the gliding community who are the main users or F***M to champion the PAW cause.
Yes, F***M started as a glider solution but last year I sat through a presentation (at AeroExpo, I think) that was pushing F***M to the GA community with their new PowerF***M offering.
Don't think they want to listen as PAW could kill PowerF***M stone dead, no matter what representations the gliding community make.

General Discussion / Re: Raspberry Pi 2 b+

When I bought my B+ the other week I noticed that RS listed number available for next day delivery as 15 thousand and something!
With a user base of over 5 million I doubt that they will disappear any time soon.

General Discussion / Re: Transponder C mode
« on: October 15, 2015, 04:40:50 pm »
I was thinking more of having a home made ADS-B transmitter without the need for a commercially supplied mode S transponder, but your point is well taken.

73
The Slice of Pi / POD board doesn't have a 40 pin connector, just a 26 pin one. You just install it at one end of the 40 pins on the Pi B+.

Presumably one could use an old E/IDE from a redundant older PC.

Is it that the hardware and software (driver) support for the V7 is not yet there for the gizmos that PAW needs (particularly the ARF and the Barometer)?

Hopefully the V6 RPi has enough life left in it that it won't be discontinued just as PAW approaches popular acceptance.

Wouldn't it be nice if we were allowed to let PAW transmit ADS-B messages!

I suppose I can see why this might be frowned upon - the integrity of the whole ADS-B infrastructure would be at the mercy of bods with dodgy soldering irons and limited understanding - but the counter argument is what is the point of ADS-B if it is too expensive for small aircraft to be able to participate in!

Rant over!
