Peter, thanks - all sorted with Lee now.

Rosetta built, upgraded to RPi 3B and working very nicely!

Thanks to everyone for the support here on the forum and through email.

Mike

Paul, Peter,

Many thanks for the fast replies. Yes, the weather option does take my fancy :)

My PAW licence has just expired, so I will try and renew for the new Pi3B MAC via the email route you suggest.

Thanks again.........Mike

Sorry if this has been asked before...

I have just upgraded from a Classic to a Rosetta kit version. Is it worth also swapping out the Classic RPi 2 for a RPi 3B?

I actually have a couple of spares having bought some 3B+ for something else.

Thank you for answering, it is good to know that it's not just me.

I think though I'll probably go the Rosetta upgrade route and use a RPI 3.

But then I can perform the repair as you suggest and either keep the RPI 2 in reserve or re-purpose it to my nephew :)

Thanks again......Mike

Technical Support / USB connector problems
« on: August 01, 2018, 09:29:36 pm »
My Classic has just started having problems with the power connector after almost a year's faithful service. It mostly works, but sometimes needs a little wiggle to get it in the right place.

I've tried a different cable and inspected the soldering but couldn't see any cracks. Probably it's the micro USB connector itself.

Googling says its possible to power a RPI via the GPIO pins but is a little risky.

I'm using the recommended Anker supply so maybe that gives protection. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi, I was having thoughts along similar lines a few weeks ago, except I wanted to make a small, portable, all-in-one box that I can sit on top of the panel (without impinging on the outside view).

Obviously, the 7-inch display is too big for that, so I bought one of these:

https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/UGEEK-Raspberry-Pi-3-5-inch-800-480-60fps-TFT-Screen-HD-HighSpeed-LCD-Module-3/1954241_32672157641.html

Which is supposed to be high resolution and sunlight readable. I've tried it with a browser running radar view and it is just about usable. I'm planning to write a bit of software to basically show the same thing as the radar display, but with slightly larger symbols and text.

I'd go along with what Ian says that it's better to run the display from a separate processor, firstly (for this stuff) I prefer to be nowhere near the processor capacity and secondly they are only £32. Also, this little display uses the same connector as the P3i radio so it would be a non-starter (I think) to piggy back it.

Having said all that, and as you suggest, using a tablet is probably the best option, especially coupled with all the advantages of Sky Demon or similar. The only reason I considered this, is that I use JeppView mobile FlightDeck sometimes which doesn't have the option to display traffic from PAW AFAIK.

Just to a ground-based PC, I'll send you a PM with the details.

Thanks Paul, actually I was just reading your earlier post where you said you can connect by setting the wired connection to 192.168.1.1.

I have a lowish-cost 'lightly-managed' switch on that address at the moment. I could probably move it if need be, but for now PAW is working well just by the cable connection. Also, it avoids the security risk you mentioned.

All I need to do is remember to plug the wifi back in before going flying ;)

Off topic slightly, but is GDL90 also available over the wired connection? I searched for some documentation on that, but didn't find it yet.

Thanks Lee for the fast response.

Sorry, I should have been clearer - I was wondering if there is a setting somewhere that I could change on my unit (temporarily), but I think I now understand that both the PAW server and all clients are hard coded to 192.168.1.1.

I had previously tried the wired port with no success. Of course I now realise :-[ this is because of the subnet clash between the wired and wireless LANs on PAW. Unplugging the wifi adaptor and rebooting gives responses on the DHCP address both NMEA on port 2000 and HTML on port 80 - happy days!

Thanks again, Mike.

Technical Support / Changing Wifi IP Address
« on: August 25, 2017, 12:48:11 pm »
I would like to use my PAW Classic to monitor traffic when I am working at home. This is easy enough with a USB wifi dongle so I can connect my PC to both my home network (wired) and to the PAW one (wifi).

The problem is that my home network also has the 192.168.1.x subnet and I am loathed to change all the devices to a different subnet. Is there any way to set a different IP address for the PAW wifi connection?

Alternatively (and also of general interest) is the 2000 port still available on the wired connection? Also, can web pages be served over the wired connection?

Thanks  :)
