General Discussion / auto update problem
« on: August 29, 2016, 04:35:08 pm »
I was on a flight yesterday.  2 pilotawares in the same aircraft.  Units positions in almost the same place on the rear seat and one not getting the same number of Mode C/S contacts. Even off other aircraft in the circuit. I think antenna may of been loose so will want to investigate that further. The really anomaly from the flight was that skydemon kept drawing our aircraft on the ground on my unit when getting position data from pilotaware. I did some tinkering while PAX...restarting PAW, connecting, disconnecting, location services (worked fine) vs flarm. I wish I'd tried restarting my ipad but didn't.  Anyway I plugged in my unit to the ethernet this morning to download the track logs and see if there might be any clues but my unit got corrupted somehow and and wouldn't boot.

Formatted the SD card and installed 20160708 on it (hadn't previously downloaded 20160820....doing that now but its taking forever to download).  Unit boots OK and I'm now connected to the admin page using 192.168.0.100 over the ethernet from by desktop PC.  But now I click on http://192.168.0.100/updates.cgi > Check for updates and the http://192.168.0.100/check.cgi page just hangs on Checking for Updates.  Same think over the wifi from the ipad.

General Discussion / Auto update process

is the PAW supposed to auto reboot once the update has finished?  Mine didn't and was really unsure how long to leave it before restarting for fear of screwing up the install.

Technical Support / software install

Happily running on a PiB+ .  A new Pi2 just arrived today.  Formatted SD card again and put software on it.  During boot on the Pi2 it gets stuck at the following line

2.2717251 ---[ end Kernel panic [ not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Anyone have any idea whats going on?

General Discussion / Connected ng to the correct paw

Can I rename my paw wifi hotspot? It occurred to me the other day that if I saw multiple paw wifis on the ramp I wouldn't be able to tell which one was mine.

General Discussion / Results and setups
« on: May 11, 2016, 10:58:39 am »
Apologies if I've missed this somewhere already

Are the PA team now able to share some of the details about the test results on the new hardware.  I mean specifically in terms of what types of antenna and where they were mounted in different aicraft?

I'm personally interested in any results from internal setups as I hire aircraft so won't have the luxury of mounting something externally.

Thanks

Is this sort of thing likely to be any good on the ARF side of things?  http://www.air-store.eu/1000027

Looks like it could be a neat solution allowing PAW to be safely stowed.

General Discussion / Custom enclosure

Just added this so as not to distract another thread....

Thank you for your reply.  I have no experience in this area at all. If I have a prototype can it be scanned into a CAD program for printing? This would make it easy to reproduce.

I'm getting out of my depth now

No problem - if you post up some pictures of the completed prototype case - sounds like you're building it by hand - I'll ask you for dimensions of specific features and see if I can recreate it in OpenSCAD.  There are 3D scanners which can digitise existing objects, but a) I don't think they work well with objects that have significant internal voids and b) I don't have one.

Probably scope for a thread on enclosures as I think we've hijacked the Regulator and ARF topic enough now!

Its possible to generate 3D meshes from photos....

General Discussion / Hex / Reg for renters
« on: October 08, 2015, 08:50:54 am »
Lee

A couple of thoughts about using the units.

I only rent aircraft from the flying school so I'm not always in the same aircraft. Also, depending on which aircraft I fly will have an impact on where I mount the PA unit. Having only a 50cm cable from battery to PA does somewhat limit that. If I'm on my own I expect it will just sit in the top of my flying bag on the pax seat else probably in the side pocket. I can hear people screaming about range impacts already but from inside the car low down even in built up areas I can see a/c at really much longer distances than I would need (ADS-B at least don’t know about P31 yet).

So after booting up my device I don't really need to go to the web interface at all other than to change the hex code from the auto generated code. You might say there is no need to change it as it will be unique to my device so all's fine.

If I'm flying along and I can see another aircraft at a similar level getting picked up on SD and I hear G-ABCD talking on the radio I'd quite like to know if the aircraft I can see on the screen is the one I can hear.  The Hex ID doesn't help me with that so I'd rather see the reg / callsign displayed.  So I'm thinking if I'd rather see that then I should probably have the option of entering that data myself so others can see that about me. Can the a/c reg be entered into the hex value instead or can it be entered as a separate value somewhere?

Personally I want to continue using my BT GPS unit stuck to the windshield and with a definite clear view of the sky so I won't be adding a GPS dongle to the PA. CollisionAware is then still very useful to me. I have to go to CollisionAware in the workflow so to swipe the connect button and having the ability to enter the a/c reg / callsign will avoid having to also open up a web page. It would just feel like one less thing to configure (or forget to (re)configure).

New web interface is pretty good.

Is the RXTX (ARF) = ON value a good indicated the its wired up correctly and should be working?
