Technical Support / Re: Rosetta WiFi not working

To close this query, I can confirm that replacing the SDR has resolved the issue, and for purpose of completeness (answering my own question) the antenna plug simply swaps out with a firm click

The only downside is I’ve now gained an additional white LED from the replacement SDR

Ok, so I’ve narrowed it down, I can connect to the Rosetta on WiFi when the SDR is not connected, and intermittently can sometimes connect with SDR connected. The SDR is running very hot, to the point where the WiFi module above is itself very hot to touch

However the SDR is not in stock in the PilotAware store

Any ideas from anyone or any of the PilotAware folk how I can breathe life back into this? Seems I’ve narrowed the problem down to the SDR

I’d happily buy an SDR if the PAW crew can supply one please?

Or is it as simple as buying a Noo Elec Neo 2 and stripping the case off, in which case how do I swap the cable across?

Thank you SteveU for the help so far

Thanks, I’ll try those things in the next day or two, the unit is loose

Can I ask - is the inbuilt WiFi on the main Pi board or the separate upper board that carries the antenna female plugs?

Thanks

Technical Support / Rosetta WiFi not working
« on: September 03, 2025, 07:43:26 am »
Hi there;

Our Rosetta has a problem that I’m struggling to fix.

WiFi connectivity became intermittent then gave up completely, the unit is not visible on available WiFi networks.

I have (as discrete tests):

- Changed the WiFi dongle
- Full software reinstall
- Swapped the Pi board
- Swapped USBs across ports

The unit does not have a current licence.

The lights on the unit appear as expected (solid power, flashing green/red for no licence), but I cannot make it visible on WiFi.

I note the software defined radio antenna mounting is very hot.

Any ideas what to try next please? Is there something silly I am missing?

Thanks for any help

Great stuff, thank you for the prompt feedback  :)

Hi there;

Fitting the external antenna kit, thinking of mounting the gps mouse on an alu bracket with it oriented “as normal”, beneath a rear window, and otherwise a distance away from metal. Will this work? Is it ok if it is on a small aluminium plate? Or will it degrade gps performance?

Thanks for advice

Technical Support / Re: iGrid no longer “going green”
« on: November 05, 2023, 04:17:00 pm »
An update on this. I think it’s ultimately working just the gsm data isn’t available as readily for whatever reason. Hence orange rather than green indication

Last flight it did ultimately connect but the data availability was patchy

I’ll keep an eye on it for any further clues of info

Thank you for the replies and feedback

Technical Support / iGrid no longer “going green”
« on: October 21, 2023, 08:59:03 pm »
Hi there;

I had iGrid working just fine up until beta forced an update (see my other recent thread)

Since then I’ve been unable to get iGrid to show a “green” GSM symbol (showing the connection working) on the radar page

Instead I’m only getting the “orange” GSM indication

On the network page a green connection to my iPhone hotspot is shown

Any ideas?

Thanks

Thank you for this

Checked the updates page via the PAW IP and sure enough there was reference to a beta update available to download. Didn’t realise I was subscribed to the beta programme but do have iGrid, but all good now I know what to do

Have successfully downloaded that beta via that page and will see how it behaves next time I fly, but suspect that may have sorted it, so thank you for the prompt and expert help as always

Kind regards

Technical Support / “New Updates Available” message not clearing
« on: August 05, 2023, 12:00:09 pm »
Hi there;

I use an iPhone 8 in the cockpit with PAW Virtual Radar displayed

It continuously shows the message “New Updates Are Available” across the radar display even though I have updated PAW using the firmware updater App

(It is a Rosetta)

Is there something else I need to update?

Thanks and regards

Technical Support / Re: iGRID - Two devices required?
« on: September 04, 2022, 03:49:06 pm »
As covered elsewhere in the thread; whether you need two devices or not is very device specific…

My iPhone 8 - ok - can act as hotspot while simultaneously connecting to pilotaware WiFi - 1 device ok

My friends iPhone 11 - ok - can act as a hotspot and connect to WiFi simultaneously

My iPhone 13 - not ok - cannot act as a hotspot and simultaneously connect to WiFi - 2 devices needed minimum

My iPad mini 2 - not ok - cannot act as a hotspot and simultaneously connect to WiFi

It then also depends on how many screens you want to drive…
In order to have SkyDemon on my ipad and pilotaware radar on my phone, I am going to have to carry 3 devices when flying, use the old iPhone as paw radar, ipad as SkyDemon, connect those to paw by WiFi, and have my current phone on 4g acting as hotspot… If only iPad mini 2 could split screen… …

Detail added in case useful to the paw team!

Should add that the previous “iGrid 2 devices needed?” thread helped me so thank you for that, I should have read it more thoroughly before starting a new thread

Ok. Answered my own question

Seems some quirk of the iPhone 8 meant it could act as host and client simultaneously whereas the newer iPhone 13 behaves more like the typical Apple behaviour and can’t do both at the same time

Frustrating

Means I’ll have to rework the way I use the devices in the cockpit  :-\
