General Discussion / Re: Cell connection (3g/4g (Ipad)) and PAW
« on: July 25, 2017, 11:55:13 am »
sorry to be clear the latest hot fix 20170721 fixes the issues nicely - no drops from sky demon, 3g/4g connectivity while connected to the PAW wifi hotspot and lots of lovely traffic to see in SD via pilot aware connection.  ;D

Yeah I know about switching off SD connectivity for planning  and in flight mode but that's not the point really.  I was hoping to get back to what we used to have. I.e. The paw hotspot not fooling iOS services into thinking that it has Internet connectivity when it clearly doesn't. Plus I use a number of other apps that need internet connectivity. Yes there is a fudge workaround but hardly slick or convenient.

I look forward to Lee issuing the proper fix.

Cheers
Neil.

Thanks Ian - have tried as you suggest (and many other things)  but still no joy. Basically, this boils down to 2 things.

1) have my iphone connect dynamically to the PAW WIFI hot spot - SD connects and shows traffic but has no internet connection so it throws out the connectivity error box every 30seconds or so. plus of course no other app on my phone can see the internet.

or

2) connect my iPhone statically to the PAW wifi (missing out DNS  & router IP addresses) - This allows my phone to defer to 4g internet connectivity while connected to PAW wifi but SD then won't connect to PAW to get any traffic or gps information.

Lee - fix urgently required please - this surely is a common fault for all who have upgraded to latest software and Kernel?

thanks
Neil.

Hi
I've just update my PAW to the latest 20170706 and updated the kernel to 4.4.34 (and sky demon to the latest) and now I get this problem mentioned in the thread of no longer having 3g/4g connectivity when my iPhone is connected to to the paw wifi and its driving me mad. I've read the previous comments in  this thread about a "solution" but afraid it may as well be written in dutch. Can someone advise (in simpleton terms) how I get back my 4g connectivity while connected to PAW? - never had this problem with previous versions.???

As  mentioned by someone earlier in the thread I tried changing the iPhone setting for the PAW wifi on my iPhone to static 192.168.1.2 with mask 255.255.255.0 (no router nor DNS entry) and although this then let my iPhone use 3g/4g for internet connectivity while connected to the paw WIFI, when I then tried to "fly" in sky demon and selected "pilot aware" rather than as previous flarm, skydemon just sat there with a message "connecting to device" eventually timing out saying "connection to gps is lost"

thanks

Technical Support / Re: Password for PAW SSID?
« on: June 19, 2016, 02:20:41 pm »
Would still prefer it to be pwd protected if it's not a huge job to do. At my local field you sometimes park quite close to public areas.

Hiding an SSID is far from fool proof and simple packet logging apps will find it in seconds. But yeah, the risk really is minimal I guess that someone would be there with the skills just to mess anyone with a PAW up.  ;D

Clearly it's all about risk vs effort to do. If it's a big job then fair enough we're not talking high risk but if it's straight forward then why wouldnt the risk be mitigated or at least let users decide if they add a password or not on their own PAW? ...as long as there is some way to reset when the eventual phone call comes to say " I've forgot my password" doh!  :o

Cheers

Technical Support / Password for PAW SSID?
« on: June 19, 2016, 10:08:00 am »
Is it possible to add a password for when you connect your device to your PAW WIFI?

I guess a) it will help prevent inadvertent connection to someone else's paw if more than one are in use at an airfield at the same time ( yes I know you've asked to memorise the last few characters of SSID  to help prevent this). And b) it will help prevent any malicious idiots from easily hacking in and changing your config without you knowing either at the airfield or at home if you have it on. 192.168.1.1 is an easy ip for folk to guess at for access to the server side of things.

Thanks
Neil.

thanks all for the valuable input  - just helps me figure it all out as a newbie. It is a great device.

The iPad gps updates at once per second (as does the gps dongle supplied with the PAW). The Garmin Glo updates the iPad at 10 times per second.

Still my question is, if I have paired my iPad to a bluetooth gps receiver, when I connect to PAW where will my iPad gets its position from for my own aircraft to display in sky demon and where will it derive its gps position in order to broadcast to others over ADSB?  bluetooth or PAW gps dongle ?

While I appreciate the benefits of one device providing both - so they are both on a level playing field so to speak, I would much prefer the accuracy and speed of the garmin to provide at least the location of me on the SD app even if the iPad uses the position provided by the PAW gps to broadcast to others via the ADSB. Though I appreciate this sounds complex to implement. Ideally it would be good (sorry I know you guys have worked damned hard  :) :)) if the PAW would optionally bluetooth to the Garmin then it would be job done.

thanks

Yeah with sky demon as soon as you select Flarm (which is what SD uses), then a message pops up briefly saying looking for satellites. You get no choice to continue using the devices location services. It was this message that suddenly made me realise that the app was probably now using the PAW gps dongle.

So I guess my concern is how accurate / reliable is this dongle when compared to
1) iPads own internal gps and
2) I normally Bluetooth my iPad to a Garmin  Glo which has a far higher refresh rate and is typically more accurate.

So in 2) does anyone know if the PAW would take precedence with the dongle gps providing all aspects of position or would the iPad continue to use the blue toothed garmin for position of my own aircraft in sky demon and the  PAW gps used   for broadcasting my position ( which potential maybe be different) via ADSB?

Thanks
Neil.

Hi
sorry if its been discussed before but I couldn't find it when searching. But in the 'prototype' pilot aware, it took its GPS position from the device it was connected to e.g.  an iPad and of course the navigation app such as sky demon would use the devices own internal location services GPS to plot your own aircraft location on the map.

Now of course though with PAW classic, it has its own GPS dongle and if I am not mistaken this has reversed the whole thing around and apps like sky demon no longer take their position from the iPad location services but from the PAW GPS dongle ??

am I right ?

thanks
Neil.
