BTW the Aircrew site shows this number during playback:

Hi Lee,
I've uploaded the file to Aircrew and made it a public flight. However I cannot see it on the list, the filename is 2020-07-17_10-24.trk

It is 10.17MB so too big to attach on this forum. If you cannot see it on Aircrew please give me your direct email and I can send it to you.

Thanks,
Chris.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your response.

Yes I've read the manual, my question relates to the Modes C/S Vertical Display Range settings on p14. Although I set this to +/- 1000', I still get alerts outside this range, in this example the 'Notice' at 1200'. FYI I've attached a screenshot of my settings.

Based on your explanation, could it be because the original 'Danger' detection was within this range and PilotAware continues to report it as the traffic moves out of range subsequently?

Also thanks for your comment about the close range screening, which makes sense.

Best Regards,
Chris.

I was testing the system and had the traffic in sight throughout so didn't need to change course.

Hi All,
I made a flight yesterday to Skegness, and PilotAware gave a great improvement in situational awareness. I had a close encounter with an Ikarus C42 (G-JENK) near The Wash, see video below:

https://youtu.be/hfj9Ky92FrE

I have a couple of questions about PilotAware's operation:

1. I have set the Vert Disp Range to +/- 1000' but still got audio alerts outside this range, e.g. at 0:45 on video there is one at 1200' below. Any ideas why? (I've noticed this on other occasions when flying over airfields, it seems to warn about traffic on the ground far below my level, which is a bit annoying, it would be useful if these could be suppressed.)

2. The Ikarus tracking disappeared at close range (1:17) and reappeared (1:35). I'm not sure why, perhaps the starboard wing blocked the reception to the ADS-B antenna?

Thanks,
Chris.

Thanks for these stats, thats amazing! :D

By the way, are you able to give a breakdown of how many were Mode S vs FLARM? Also perhaps a geographic breakdown too?

An observation, on Sunday I flew down to Bolt Head in Devon and noticed that after passing SW of Bristol the number of traffic alerts reduced significantly. I'm not sure whether there was just less traffic down there or whether there are fewer ground stations in that region to pick them up.

Chris.

Technical Support / Re: Connecting Pilot Aware to SkyView

Hi,
I would recommend following this thread. I recently installed a Rosetta unit in our RV-7 and used this info and it worked first time  :)

See attached pictures:
Set Skyview Serial Port (we used 2) to FLARM TRAFFIC baud 57600
Set Rosetta Port 2 to Flarm-OUT baud 57600
Wire the RS232 D connector:
- Pin 2 RD to Skyview SV-HARNESS-D37 Pin 6 Serial Port 2 TX
- Pin 3 TD to Skyview SV-HARNESS-D37 Pin 5 Serial Port 2 RX
- Pin 5 Ground

Good luck,
Chris.

Hi Admin,
I made the flight this morning, took off from Bidford at 10:09 and landed at Sibson 10:43. Please could you let me know which ground stations picked me up. I got about half a dozen traffic alerts during the flight and it was a great help with spotting the aircraft to know which area to look!

I forgot to download my track after the flight. Will it still be saved on the Rosetta unit even after power down? I can then use the Aircrew tool to analyse too.

Thanks,
Chris.

Hi,
Thanks for you help, that would be great.
I fly from Bidford. The Hex ID is 406792 and callsign is G-RVAH.
I'm planning to do the test flight tomorrow (Wed 24/6) in the morning and will be heading East to Peterborough Sibson airfield.
Best Regards,
Chris.

Technical Support / Flight Testing new PilotAware installation

Hi All,
We have recently completed a permanent installation of a Rosetta unit in our RV-7.

I've been looked for methods / procedures for testing its performance in flight but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Due to the lack of traffic at the moment, I was wondering whether I could somehow measure range of the 869.5 signals to / from ground stations to check the antenna effectiveness.

Thanks,
Chris.

Many thanks Graham & Geoffrey,
I followed your modification instructions on my Anker power supply today, and they worked a treat!

General Discussion / LAA Approval of PilotAware installation?
« on: June 17, 2020, 03:50:26 pm »
Hi all,
I have purchased a Rosetta unit and a permanent installation kit. Do I need to obtain LAA approval via a LAA/MOD7 form? The clause on the LAA website says:

The permanent installation  of  transmitting avionics  into LAA  aircraft  must  be  approved  by  the  LAA.   Note that avionics equipment designed to be portable (hand-held radio, hand-held GPS, etc) do not need installation approval.

Has anyone else obtained approval? Or is the Rosetta classed as "designed to be portable"?
Best Regards,
Chris.

Hi all,
To follow up on the question about the GPS mouse and shortening its tail. I received the mouse today and found that indeed it is possible to desolder the cable at the mouse end relatively easily. This will allow me to shorten the cable and have a small hole in the coaming. See attached photos.
Thanks for all the help with this,
Chris.

Thanks Paul - I think my coaming is aluminium but I will check and if not try the GPS under it before drilling.
Cheers,
Chris.
