General Discussion / YouTube video

The PAW intro video is very good.
I did note the following though:
1. Typo (Squalk) at the 4.00 min point
2. For clarity, should this (at the 1:30 min point) be reworded:
"PilotAware will transmit and receive P3I signals from other PilotAware units"
Otherwise it possibly reads like PAW is re-transmitting received data from other PAW units.

Perhaps reword to this?
"PilotAware will transmit P3I signals and receive P3I signals from other PilotAware units"

Yes, it does seem to be priced on the high side but everyone knows that anyone who flies has stacks of cash available....................!
I expect the certification costs were significant and will probably account for £100 (minimum) to the cost of each unit sold.
You only need to read the specification page of a Trig TT21 transponder to see the range of tests that have to be carried out to meet compliance/certification requirements.
Then add all the other company related costs (R&D, manufacture, testing and mark-up) and cost soon spirals up.

This is getting some publicity now:
http://www.uavionix.com/products/echo-att-20b/

Seems it's an ADS-B In and ADS-B out device, but not a transponder.
Looks like it's what the LPAT was going to be but use your own display device.

All sorted now thanks.
Flags are correctly displayed as well as the "Mode" status (CSA--).
Thanks for your help.

Peter,

I was asking on behalf of  a friend (as they say!).

We looked at the traffic status page and, I may be wrong, but I didn't think it showed the flag settings for his aircraft transponder's transmissions. However, this could have been for a technical issue which has been resolved.
I take your point about what the LAA have requested.
Thanks

General Discussion / LAA validation requirements
« on: January 06, 2017, 02:38:32 pm »
Just wondered, is there any technical reason why a PAW/Mode S transponder configured to give ADS-B out, can't "self validate" the flag settings as required by the LAA?
The PAW will pickup the transponder transmissions but, usually, are "blocked" by PAW (adding the hex address).
Perhaps a software enhancement required to provide this capability?

Hi Chris,

Do you have the latest firmware for the Trig TT21? It needs to be upgraded if your Trig is a few years old.
Although I don't yet have PAW I have ADS-B out using a separate GPS mouse and it works fine.

On my Trig TT21 it displays the Lat/Long of the GPS device. Not sure if that is what you see and mean by "a warning of no ADS-B".

Roger,

I don't know what radio you have but I would have thought you would want to connect your audio amp to you radio's "ext audio in" rather than "intercom aux".
I suspect the impedance of your amp is affecting your radio's microphone circuit.

Or experiment with a series resistor between your amp output and "intercom aux" connection. Try 150 ohm and then up to 600 ohm.

Why would a ground based PAW need to transmit if the purpose was just to monitor arrivals, aircraft in the vicinity and general situational awareness?

Possibly an impedance mismatch or because your Walkman's audio output is higher than the PAW output?
Although I don't know anything specific about the Dittel it is most likely its ext audio input is looking for a compatible audio signal with a 600 ohm impedance. For example, the audio from a VOR receiver.
You are probably just "lucky" that you can get the audio from your Walkman to be heard.
The VOX circuit on the microphone input, when triggered by speaking, most likely just allows you to hear anything on the audio "receive" part of your Dittel radio, including anything connected to the ext. audio input.

Rob,

Be careful if you use magnets. Your compass etc......!

Hi Chris,

The info from Trig tech support seemed to suggest the data wasn't only for when ADS-B was configured/enabled.
I had to make those settings when I first installed my transponder (3 years ago) well before I decided to add the ADS-B capability.

Hi Lee,

Then what about trying to use the "aircraft category" and "speed" flags to differentiate between CAT and GA mode S bearingless targets?

I have asked Trig about these and it seems all Mode S transponders will have this data.

From Trig:

"The aircraft category is reported whenever the flight ID is changed, when it’s interrogated, and is squittered every 5 seconds (if the aircraft is ADS-B equipped).
The airspeed is reported when replying to a Mode S interrogation (usually from a TCAS).
The aircraft category is reported in the “Aircraft Identification and Category” extended squitter message in the “Emitter Category” field.
The airspeed is reported in the “Long Air-Air Surveillance” message in the “RI” field."

I remember setting these values when I got my Trig TT21

So there aren't any flags in a Mode S (non ADS-B) transmission that could possibly help differentiate between CAT and GA?

I seem to recall setting various parameters in my Trig TT21which relates to my aircraft size and cruise speed etc. I don't think they were related to my ADS-B connection but don't have my manual to hand just at the moment.

Just a thought - could the SIL / SDA flag settings, in conjunction with received signal strength, be used to indicate the likelihood of a CAT Mode S bearingless target return and therefore a likely low(er) probability of a "risk" aircraft"?

As I say, just a thought and I am not even sure if these flags would be set to in a CAT's Mode S transponder (with no ADS-B).

Or are there other flags that may differentiate between CAT and GA mode S transponders?
