Technical Support / Re: PAW audio to Trig radio

You may need to connect the "other" wire from the 3.5 mm plug to airframe or audio ground.
Also, sometimes a 600 ohm resistor in the feed to the Trig ext audio input is required.
You could check with Trig if this is required.

Sean,

Are you getting textual warnings on SkyDemon for aircraft that you believe could cause a collision risk?
Also the screen display of risk aircraft also change to red if SD thinks there is  a risk.
Just wondering if there is an altitude mis-match somewhere between your SD noted altitude and what PAW is telling you regarding detected aircraft?

General Discussion / Re: grant for EU member states available??

This is a UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Department for Transport (DfT) funded "project".
You will have to ask our own National Authority if a similar rebate scheme is available.
I think that is unlikely....

General Discussion / Vector plots

The PilotAware Vector facility is very good and I thank the PAW team for making it available to the GA community.

Do you think it would be useful if you can include a summary which ATOM Grid stations detected the data for the the aircraft selected?
For example, you only have data for one flight for me and I think I know which ground stations detected me.
However it would be good to have confirmation. Perhaps also an indication of the number of contacts per station?

Thanks

Technical Support / Re: Wiring into Trig TT21 - is it worth it?
« on: November 26, 2020, 07:08:50 am »
My understanding is that TCAS in CAT is triggered by the other aircraft's transponder and not its ADS-B Out data.
Future upgrades in TCAS technology may process ADS-B Out data for TCAS purposes, but will always process transponder data from your certified Trig TT21.
As other posters have said, definitely go ahead and make yourself ADS-B Out visible.

Technical Support / Re: PAW - ATOM Grid Station Reception
« on: October 28, 2020, 08:40:20 am »
Thanks for the info.
So, what about this scenario:
I am flying from Blackbushe to Land End at 1500 ft AGL and only use the SD map (on my smartphone) for navigation.
How do I know if I am in range of an ATOM grid station and therefore able to receive uplinked MLAT (from Mode S only) and FLARM (from gliders) transmissions?
I have no idea where the ATOM grid stations are located in the vicinity of my track and wouldn't be looking on the SD map for towers to "appear".
Is there no other indication on SD providing some kind of status that I am in range of Atom grid?

Thanks

Peter,

So what is the significance of the three colours that PAW/OGN masts will be displayed in SD?

Thanks

For users of PAW and SkyDemon, how will the user know if they are in range of an ATOM Grid ground station and, therefore, assured they will be able to pick up MLAT's Mode S aircraft?
Thanks

General Discussion / Re: The Graffiti Conspicuity Device

Keith,

I am already ADS-B Out equipped but want to be able to receive ADS-B (and other EC formats (FLARM etc.)).
Is it likely that Graffiti will (eventually) be offered as a small lightweight/low power consumption device for GA that requires an EC receive capability?

Regards

The French Meteo website uses the colour scheme Steve mentioned...

Okay, what does the Graffiti do? Or is it still under wraps??
Is it a different version of Rosetta but smaller, lighter, uses less power battery etc.?

I think the basic Funke transponder design is quite old and developed before aviators got interested in ADS-B Out.
As mentioned previously, to make a Funke work at all in Mode S they had to modify the interface module in order to store the ICAO code.
That cost was, I believe, a few hundred Euros.
I am not sure if a certified GPS source would make any difference as I don't think any were really available a few years ago.

Clive,

If it helps, my friend had the older style Funke transponder and did get ADS-B Out working with PAW as the data source.
Did you get your Funke modified so the interface module contains the memory chip that stores the ICAO code?

The only issue was his ground speed, as seen by FR24 and similar, was it varied considerably.

He no longer has that installation now as he upgraded using Trig equipment.

PeteD,

Can your ELT antenna be removed from the ELT or from the attaching coax?
If so, why not just remove the ELT antenna and replace it with a homemade or purchased transponder antenna?

You can always restore everything back to normal at a later time.
