My two ARF systems are still working well with the latest version of PAW. Looking forward to the new version. if it's better than my current set up I will be delighted Thanks Lee for all your hardwork on making PAW so good.

General Discussion / A Supplied Aerial Test
« on: November 21, 2015, 10:35:13 am »
PAW Friends.

I use the aerial supplied with the DVB-t Unit and am really happy with the range.
This morning in a bored moment I unscrewed the top section of both my PAW unit to see what happened.
The answer....... Not a lot.
From My Home in Ruislip West London (the rear of my house faces 320 degrees) I am able to receive aircraft (at altitude) upto Leicester and East Mids. with the aerial element taken off i was still able to see aircraft at Oxford.
as my aircraft only flies at 108kts I may now leave the top element off.
I would be interested to hear anyone elses results for a similar test

The Spare SD Card is the answer.

I upgraded to ******30 version last week, it was causing no end of issues so I swapped the cards back to ******18 sweet as.

I have 3 cards per unit . One in the PilotAware, the last version in a holder inside the Pilot Aware and the 3rd in a folder formatted and ready to load the latest version on.

General Discussion / Re: U-Blox 7 GPS - Lights
« on: November 06, 2015, 10:50:44 pm »
I run 2 Ublox-7's pretty happy with both.

GPS units made in the far East tend to have a 'Almanac' that is looking for satellites it expects to see over the far East.  it can't see over Europe when it expects to see them.
As a result at first time power up thousands of miles from where it expects to be can take a time for it to find itself.
Give it a fair chance by giving it the best view of the sky it can

A warning is a warning this is not to replace the Mk1 eyeball, but if something gives  a warning and you lookout see and avoid then it has done it's job.
In practice I would set to where an alarm was close(ish) for a non bearing contact.

I am aware of signal strengths from my previous Job as a BBC Engineer (33years).

In my latest config with great ADS-B reception and very good P3i coverage my antenna are as close to touching as I can get them separated only by the radius of the small mag base (on the subject of mag base I have broken the magnet out and discarded and 'Hook and Loop' fastened the antenna to the box).

Lee,

How do you confiqure the Pressure sensors? I use the hobbytronics ones straight out of the packet.

Lee,

That would be fantastic I think a warning that prompts us to look for an aircraft if it near us on a similar level in our proximity is a possible life saver.

I would be happy  to help flight test this.

If there was an option on the config page that allowed the user to dial in signal strengths in % for proximity warning to allow for flight tests. I understand the differences in output power of transponders. Is it the airlines have one power and GA have lower output? I am sure to miss Airliners but it is us users in class G I want warning about.

General Discussion / Mode C/S
« on: October 31, 2015, 08:16:44 am »
Lee,

I know this has been discussed before and I know the reasons why not..
I think PAW is fantastic and am promoting it with all my might, the question I then get asked from pilots is does it do mode C (1090mhz tx's). When I say No because of the technical reasons the aircraft  only TX's Ident and Altitude they all say ok but a rough proximity and a height would be great.

The question I ask is are you further investigating a Signal Strength altitude alert?

As for calibrating the signal strength? Do we know the position of your furthest ADS-B signal and where it is in relation us, do we know the signal strength of that input? If that is the case could we not set a percentage of that signal strength to determine other risks?

I have had an interesting effect it might be worth noting.

If I use my pilot aware and monitor aircraft everything compares to FlightRadar24.
If it then log off but leave my PAW on for a couple of hours when I log back on again the screen is awash with hundreds of aircraft, after a few seconds the number come down to a sensible realistic display again akin to FlightRadar24.
