General Discussion / FL*RM Mouse
« on: January 19, 2017, 04:47:43 pm »
Hello all at PilotAware,

We are getting ready to start this years flying campaign and I was wondering what the status with the FL*RM  mouse.
What are the results like? How robust is that side of the PilotAware. We are almost ready to press the go button to make purchases.

General Discussion / A way of connecting to a tablet that is not wifi?
« on: November 22, 2016, 04:19:05 pm »
Hello,

Is there a way we can connect to a tablet other than WIFI?
Pilotaware fits all our requirements but for us to implement them into our aircraft using WIFI becomes a Major Mod requiring and STC.

General Discussion / Pilotaware undertest
« on: August 24, 2016, 05:03:08 pm »
Today our testing started for real.
So far loving the results. We would like to see more PAW's out there so get buying and building.
The Mode C and S are important to us and are the main subject of our testing. I have enclosed an image of my PAW placed on to our mission rack in a PA31 reg BPYR.
You may note that I to have gone for one of the recommended Maplin Hammond Cases. I have removed the end panel and have replaced it with a 3mm hole mesh to let air circulate. You can now see the lights on the Pi2 and the Bridge unit through the mesh.

With the Yellow antenna I made using a piece of wire and a right angle SMA was indicating in the traffic window that we were picking up in excess of 170 sources at a range of up to 165kms.

The one PAW we did see had a hex code of 405091 at a range of 16.1km

General Discussion / New licence for a Raspberry Pi Upgrade.
« on: July 08, 2016, 11:55:49 am »
I bought a Complete kit and a shield to use on my old Pi. I registered the years licence that came with the shield.

I now want to swap my old Pi for a new Pi 2 what licence do I need to buy to get the new Pi 2 up and running to the full facilities?
Many thanks

General Discussion / Mode C and S
« on: June 28, 2016, 07:23:39 pm »
Lee,

Over the last 3 days I have flown 13hrs 45mins in some of our PA31's. I have been using my old engineering version of PAW which detected both Mode C and S and gives coloured aircraft warnings (I do have 2 new PAW's a Classic and a bridge, but for the time being they will stay in the office as the mode C is so good on the old version we don't want to fly without it).
The PAW has been flying in parallel with our £2000 Portable Power flarm our belief is the PAW performs as well if not better than the Flarm.
My plea then is for Mode C to be introduced into the New PAW the green amber and red warnings be reintroduced for the mode C and Mode S warnings.

Many Thanks

Steve

p.s. Great work.

I installed my new bridge on my old Pi Board. I applied for my licence and ran it. Subsequently I have upgraded to  Pi2 and re installed the software (the latest) have i just ruined my licence or do I have to buy a new one?

General Discussion / COLOUR CHANGE
« on: June 08, 2016, 03:46:03 pm »
Hello,

In the previous version of the software (engineering release) the mode C/S traffic the aircraft icon changed colour green through to red.
I notice on my new classic the aircraft Icon stays white.
in the traffic listing in the browser I note the signal strength box changes colour with reception strength.

Have I not set my new unit up correctly.

Steve

p.s. I will still be using my old engineering version in parallel with my new classic as the Mode C works well and a great catch all.

General Discussion / A Supplied Aerial Test
« on: November 21, 2015, 10:35:13 am »
PAW Friends.

I use the aerial supplied with the DVB-t Unit and am really happy with the range.
This morning in a bored moment I unscrewed the top section of both my PAW unit to see what happened.
The answer....... Not a lot.
From My Home in Ruislip West London (the rear of my house faces 320 degrees) I am able to receive aircraft (at altitude) upto Leicester and East Mids. with the aerial element taken off i was still able to see aircraft at Oxford.
as my aircraft only flies at 108kts I may now leave the top element off.
I would be interested to hear anyone elses results for a similar test

General Discussion / Mode C/S
« on: October 31, 2015, 08:16:44 am »
Lee,

I know this has been discussed before and I know the reasons why not..
I think PAW is fantastic and am promoting it with all my might, the question I then get asked from pilots is does it do mode C (1090mhz tx's). When I say No because of the technical reasons the aircraft  only TX's Ident and Altitude they all say ok but a rough proximity and a height would be great.

The question I ask is are you further investigating a Signal Strength altitude alert?

As for calibrating the signal strength? Do we know the position of your furthest ADS-B signal and where it is in relation us, do we know the signal strength of that input? If that is the case could we not set a percentage of that signal strength to determine other risks?

General Discussion / RF Test in West London
« on: October 24, 2015, 11:53:00 am »
I have today concluded a comprehensive test in West London heavily built up area.

With 2 Units of identical build quality and design and equipment running the latest software I received 1/2 mile range exactly the same on both units. Apart from the first 2 hundred yards there was NO line of sight between the 2 units.

Very impressed

General Discussion / RFSolutions RF Board
« on: October 21, 2015, 02:48:36 pm »
In my Old Job as a BBC Special Cameras Engineer we used RFSolutions equipment a lot.

I notice on their website they have a beta version of an 868mhz TX with impressive claims

Might be worth a look.
