Audio output to speaker
« on: August 07, 2017, 11:53:01 am »
Hi, I have just installed a new Pilot Aware system in my glider connected to Skydemon on an iphone.  I would like advice on how to get an audio output as I cannot feed an input into headphones.
I wish to link the RPi via probably a small amplifier which can be powered by 12v or USB power to a 5w 8ohm speaker. This amplifier must not need any physical contact to turn it on and off as it will be out of reach.
Thanks,  Andrew

Hi Andrew,

The PilotAware audio out is via the 3.5mm TRRS (Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve) jack on the side of the raspberry Pi. See this thread http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,376.msg5117.html#msg5117 and/or Google 'Audio' from the home page.

The simplest option is to connect a small audio speaker box direct. There is no problem using a standard 3.5mm audio plug (mono or stereo) from this socket. I use a battery powered speaker box for home testing and it works fine with plenty of audio volume.

Let me know how you get on.

Regards

Have you considered plugging a Bluetooth transmitter into your PAW?

I don't know the capability of your speaker but if it's not Bluetooth capable, just buy a couple of these (sort of thing):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-in1-Wireless-Bluetooth-3-5mm-Stereo-Audio-Adapter-Transmitter-and-Receiver/252719523220?_trksid=p2045573.c100506.m3226&_trkparms=aid%3D555014%26algo%3DPL.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20151005190705%26meid%3D5d295d4dc43d4dec850f5c2a2067d538%26pid%3D100506%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26

Plug one into your PAW and set to TX and the other into your speaker and set it to TX. Of course, if your speaker is BT capable then you only need buy one  :)
