Linking to the Kobo
« on: March 29, 2018, 10:11:31 pm »
Has anyone else linked to a Kobo tablet?  (E-reader touch)

I have linked into XC-Soar on the Kobo, and that seems sucessful (although it seems to always show all aircraft of all altitudes).

But there seems to be no ability to install a web browser, and therefore no way of installing the PAW ‘radar’ screen.  Is there any way of adding a web browser to the Kobo?  Any ideas?

RE

P.S.   The Kobo only seems to link to the PAW wifi using 192.168.1.21.  Not sure why.

Hi Rog,

Yes several (including Lee and Myself) have run XC-Soar on the Kobo Reader using PilotAware as the traffic source, though it's quite a while since I set it up or ran it, so Lee is probably much more up to date with it than I am.

One of the positive attributes of this setup is that the display - though black and white has very high contrast and is extremely daylight readable. On the downside, as with other 'simple' Nav Systems, XC-Soar does as you say show all aircraft traffic as it doesn't incorporate any Altitude Filters of its own. This is something we have been asked to add to PilotAware in the past, so you never know.

Sorry, I can't help you with adding a web browser to the Kobo. I don't know whether that is possible, though you can probably ask on the XC-Soar Users Forum. I have just dug out my Kobo - strangely right to hand next to my chair in my Living Room and have it on charge, so wil have another look tomorrow.

You could of course run XC-Soar on your KOBO and run PilotAware Radar on a separate 'old disused' smartphone if you wanted to. This is entirely feasible.

Hope this helps

Regards

Peter

I have worked with the Kobo a bit more and...

The Kobo interferres with the radio far too much, needing maximum squelch to get rid of it.  Perhaps the frequency of its screen refresh, or something.  Anyway, we need to reduce that somehow.

There IS a web browser on the Kobo, in the Beta Functions section.  But there are too many actions to get the Kobo connected.  Glider pilots want an on-off switch, and nothing more.

The XC-Soar software does just this.  When you turn on the Kobo, it comes up with XC-Soar, and a button to press when you fly.  Could not be simpler.   The Kobo could be a good PAW screen, if it did something similar, and brought up the ‘radar’ screen.

The XC-Soar software does link to PAW (eventually).  However, it will not exclude high-and-distant aircraft, and so we ended up with 70 aircraft on the screen.  Would it be possible to filter out the distant and high aircraft, at the PAW end, instead of at the Kobo end?   Choices of....

5km, 10km, 20km, 50km.
1000ft, 2000ft, 3000ft.

And only give that data to the Kobo.

Hi Roger
This is in the latest release 20180520 - to fix a similar request from Paul Ruskin for the LX displays

Thx
Lee

Thanks Lee.  I will try that new version.

I would prefer the PAW radar display, to the XC-Soar radar display, but I am having trouble getting the Kobo web-browser to connect to the Paw.  It drops the wifi connection all the time.  (But not when using XC-Soar on the Kobo, which stays linked.).   But as Kobo says, the web browswer is only an unsupported beta function.

BTW - have you got any closer to showing different symbols (icons) on the PAW radar - for jets, light aircraft, gliders, balloons, and hang-gliders....?   This would be a useful addition.    It would be nice if Kobo could follow suit with different icons, but they don’t seem too interested at present....

It might also be nice if the closest contact flashed or something.  The Kobo is b/w, so you don’t get a great colour contrast on their screen.

Hi Rog,
How are you with an icon editor (eg paint.net) - I am always looking for volunteers ....
Seriously, if you would like to propose some icons, I could provide templates to edit
Thx
Lee

Here are a few icons.
But not sure what format you need.

And the upload will not allow me to send them.  I will send by email.

If vector icons are needed, you could try these.
