Internal antenna mounting
« on: December 19, 2017, 06:26:21 pm »
I've just purchased a Tuned Low Profile Antenna from the PAW shop in an attempt to tidy up the cockpit and have less on the coaming.

I know the antenna should be positioned vertically, but the only places where I can put it high up and not block the lookout are close to aluminium supports. These are on the sides of the canopy and just behind the seats. In terms of line of sight this will mean a very narrow angle of blocking, unfortunately in the direction of travel.

So can anyone else who has installed one of these internal antennas in a metal aircraft/low wing/bubble type canopy give me some tips?

Hi

Hmm I think a monopole mounted externally would probably be a better choice for a metal aircraft
What is your aircraft ?

Thx

Hi Lee,

It's an Aircoupe, Annex II so I don't really want to fork out for the paperwork etc.

I'm now thinking if I double-sided tape a piece of rigid plastic to the canopy surround just behind my shoulder, then the antenna to that, it should be a couple of inches forward of the metal and out of the way etc. It will be above shoulder height.

Hi Mike
Let us know how you get on. This should give you a good forward view. It’s a pity that EASA aircraft don’t always minor mods for safety installations.
