Garmin 496 and traffic data

Hi. It's possible to display traffic data from PilotAware on Garmin 496/495 gps?

Hi. It's possible to display traffic data from PilotAware on Garmin 496/495 gps?

I have been asked about this previously.
If you can refer me to a specification for the format, I can take a look.
I would need to know the electrical spec (I presume it takes an RS232 feed)
and the specification for the data format defining the traffic onformation

Hi. It's normal RS-232. I know that XRX PCAS works with this via RS-232. I'll take a look.

There is something. It's called Garmin TIS, normally it's used to connect with mode-s transponder. It can display up to 7 aircrafts.

I don't know if this helps, but there's a chap out there who's been decoding/compiling a list of the GDL-39 traffic protocols. The GDL-39 sends traffic information to a Garmin GPS. He has a blog and a website. I don't know if this helps:

I read on  Garmin's website their newer portables  (695/795/Aera 500) have received software updates to accept  Garmin's "ADSB-traffic". Alas they don't seem to have updated the 496 to support this.

Not 100% sure if it is the same thing but Garmin show the syntax for a "traffic report" message for MFDs in section 3.5.1 of this public document.

Garmin GDL 90 Data Interface Specification

Unlike the original Garmin TIS this does not seem to be restricted to reporting only 8 targets.

I had a look at that GDL-90 stuff, and it appears it's designed to interface with the Apollo MX20 (rebadged/reborn as a Garmin MX20/GMX200 now) MFD and precious little else, so it appears it doesn't output the Garmin TIS protocol unless you know any different.

The GMX200 also receives the TIS protocol in addition I believe, but that may be on a different version:

The GMX 200 comes in four versions: Standard, Traffic, Radar/TAWS, and Radar/Traffic.

GMX 200 Traffic - supports interfaces to Garmin TIS transponders and ADS-B transceivers, and can also be connected to certain TCAS 1 and TAS systems

GMX 200 Radar/TAWS - supports interfaces to Garmin GWX 68 radar, other onboard radar systems, and selected TAWS sensors

GMX 200 Radar/Traffic - supports traffic interfaces and can also be interfaced with Garmin's GWX 68T, a new color digital weather radar with 6.5 KW of transmit power. When connected to the GWX 68T, the Radar/Traffic model displays real-time weather ahead of the aircraft supporting both horizontal and vertical perspectives.

The GMX 200 may be interfaced with the Garmin 400/500 series, GNS 480T, Garmin GDL 69/69A, Garmin GTX 330/33T, Garmin GDL 90T, Garmin GWX 68, as well as many other manufactures' GPS navigation equipment.

My post was not about  "Garmin TIS" Paul but "ADS-B traffic".

Um, ok. But the format of data which GPSs such as the 496/Aera 500/695/etc take in to display traffic, is in the format of "TIS" information sent (in the US) from a GTX-330. This is the protocol we want I believe?

Hi. I'm looking for TIS protocol specyficatiom. I would like to decode it initially by arduino but then its easy to convert code and use maybe in pilotaware. Can anyone share some informatons, maybe specyfication of protocol?
I'm not sure if this GDL39 protocol is the same or not?

I have 496 and 695 for testing.

I have tried many times, but unsuccessfully to get this information from Garmin.
They are not prepared to provide any useful information regarding this protocol, and keep it secret
Good luck, but I think you will not be able to do this.

Thx

I think only way is reverse engineering here :).
Now I haven't any TIS messages trasmiter. Maybe someone can record some sentences from Garrecht TRX1500 of Zaon PCAS for analyze?
Probably I will have trx1500 next week but it's not 100% sure.

I expect that it will be normal RS-232 with 9600 or 4800 baud rate.

I am pretty sure the messages are encrypted, so not so simple.
I did find a posting on the web which reverse engineered the algorithm, and it was not trivial !
