I think I have WiFi issues as well. I am in the first stages of getting PA running.  The system consists of just the Pi
and a WiFi dongle.  The last few lines displayed are :-

[ ok ] Stopping advanced IEEE 802.11 management: hostapd
[....] Starting advanced IEEE 802.11 management: hostapdSegmentation fault
 failed!
Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power (8B26) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not permitted.

Raspbian GNU/Linux 7 pilot31-rpi tty1

pilot31-rpi login:

The adapter claims to use the Ralink RT5370 chipset. When in my Win7 PC, Device Manager shows the Hardware Ids to be :-

USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8176&REV_0200
USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8176

and googling these seem to indicate a Realtek RTL8188CU.  Do you think I have been sold a pup (by Amazon)?
at this link http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00UFJ0MI6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

 Any suggestions, please?

I received my new WIFI but havo not more luck establishing the hotspot.
As you suggested in another thread, I connected my Raspberry to my network via RJ45 and got the following screenshots.
For information the ARF board is not yet connected.

There are 2 issues I see here

Firstly where the WiFi is clearly not an RT5370 (but sold as one) - as reported by Richard earlier in the thread.
This is actually a different dongle

There is a second issue whereby WiFi dongles advertise themselves as RT5370 with the correct VID:PID of
148f:5370, but they do not work - as reported by prgoell

I swapped one of my WiFi dongles with another user who saw the same issue as prgoell, his was purchased from the pihut
and when I tried his WiFi - it also failed for me, it would hang starting the hostapd.

As far as the RTL8188 is concerned, I think that is a lost cause.
I am more concerned about these dongles which 'claim to be' RT5370, but which clearly have an issue

I need to try and post something on the raspberry pi forum to see if anybody has any ideas.

If it helps, I do have a stash of working RT5370 WiFi dongles ?

Thx
Lee

Do you see any errors in the boot messages if you have a monitor connected ?

I am having the same problems as Richard W

I have ordered another wifi dongle as recommended elsewhere on this board and will try again when it arrives.

Hi Ian,
Just to clarify -
The dongle you have is not an RT5370 ?
Was it sold as an RT5370 ?

Hello,
I have no error messages on boot up.
The only thing I have is a warning : Kernel lacks cgroup or memory controller not available, not starting cgroup

I have found the following infos, may be they can be of some help

Regards

(I have ordered one of the dongles on amazon that is advertized here as working, as well as another raspberry)

We really need to get to the bottom of why some of these dongles reported as Ralink RT5370 are not working,
Glad to hear all is well.

Thx

Hi Lee,

Here’s another challenge for us!

As mentioned in a previous thread, I bought a so called Raspberry Pi micro wi-fi dongle, only for it to turn up and not work.  Richard kindly shared his type/model/source of his that worked perfectly.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381052780430?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I ordered one from ebay.

In the meantime I plugged in a very old (and large) TP-Link TL-WN721N (see photo) and everything was fine with no drop-out of GPS signal when connected to SkyDemon .

When my new wi-fi dongle arrived (same as Richard’s), I plugged in – updated the license and all worked – for about 5 minutes, then the GPS was lost to SkyDemon with a failed to connect to butterfly error message.  I re-booted – and exactly the same happened after approx. 5 minutes.

I replaced the old TP-Link back in – no issues with dropping.

How come the same bit of kit works without issues (aka Richard), and keeps dropping in my build – odd!

I am looking at your power cable, do you have a spec ?
It needs to be 20awg

Lee,

This is the power supply I'm using - as used by others also I believe.
