Fail on boot up
« on: September 16, 2015, 08:45:27 am »
We have the same failure messages on all our installations
fail - usr/local/bin/mount_umoifs called with/var_0 etc etc - if I copied the sentence down correctly, and
FAILED starpar/ etc etc

does this mean we have the wrong update installed?  it states 20150911 but I thought we had 20150912 installed

well thought I'd try one of the things out anyway and despite the fail messages during boot up I can see airliners transmitting ADSB - and all through the house window! No idea whether the ARF works - but the machine thinks it does!

I get one or two file system mount related failure messages on boot as well but it seems to work fine.

Well we have done some experimentation

and despite the 2 fail messages on boot up we have tested two of our units and they both work with ADSB and on P3i.  from 'bedroom level' P3i signals we can see each other at around 5km apart.  That is from inside and outside the Fenland zone. We are having disconnection issues with the CollisionAware dropping out and then SkyDemon unable to see the GPS.  Maybe it will be better in the air and away from other wif fi hotspots?  Trials at the weekend are scheduled.

Most issues I have seen are either power or close to other WiFi,

Can you tell me how you are providing power to PilotAware,
What is the power source
What is the power cable - more importantly, what is the AWG of the power wires in the USB

Thx

power source is house mains via an ipad usb power source at the moment.  this is both units in each house!
cable is from china - no idea cable thickness although the outer is reasonably thick - but this means nothing.  We'll sort it out - if necessary I'll make my own power cable for use in the plane - I can use 20 awg or thicker cable then!

we have other wi fi in the house.
The odd thing I've found is that if the collisionaware is running (blue line at top of screen) and skydemon apparently Ok -If I change over to open up the collisionaware screen the P3i interface automatically switches off and I then have to switch it on again.  I still appear to have wi fi and can reach the web page screen etc.  Not to bothered.

Have you ant idea the fail modes for all our units during boot up please
see post 1 of this topic - I cannot do a screen dump - I'm using television to monitor the boot up sequence!

These failures are not an issue, I am trying to filter them out so as not to cause concern.
I am also trying to add additional log messages to indicate when the boot is successful, and will
then look to have a status window on the webserver

Check the power supply, some iPad power supplies are only 1A, this is not sufficient, mine is 2.4A
The USB wire must be 20AWG for Power, Data is irrelevent, also the shorter the better
Here is a good article

Not sure what is happening here, but I am concerned that it is losing the PilotAware WiFi through dipping power supply

The major draw on current is the pulsing ARF, I would be interested to know how well it performs with the ARF unplugged

As you are aware many of my issues were due to power.
I have bought these items on Amazon and all appears to be OK.
Using these the PilotAware ran for a full 9 hours before the WiFI dropped out.

It is supplied with a short USB to micro lead.
Aukey Quick Charge 2.0 10000 mAh Dual-Port Portable External Battery Fast Charger (5V/1A + 5V/2.4A 9V/1.8A 12/V1.5A, 2.0A for iPhone and iPad, 2.4A for Android, Quick Charge Input and Output)-Black £16.99

PortaPow Specialised 30 cm 20AWG TPE Fast Charge with Data Block Micro USB Cable (Pack of 2) £6.99

Hope this helps.

I have a 2.5 amp power supply on the Pi, but a 2m cable - have changed for a 1m long cable and appears better.  I haven't therefore taken the ARF out.  I will have to look at the aircraft power installation - I have a 5 amp power supply with 4 usb sockets to power pilotaware, iPad and Dual 150 GPS.  Maybe I will make up my own power cable for the pilotaware.
testing continues

I will look at your power supplies from amazon

I would say 2m is way too long. If you need a long power lead, I think you need to rig up a bespoke solution.
I have been using 50cm/20AWG leads which have very low voltage drop.

I went for these 0.5M versions, cannot comment on longer cables
