Trying to get my head around this!
« on: September 10, 2015, 12:17:25 am »
This sounds very good, well done.

A few questions if I may!
I fly a microlight with a Mode S transponder BUT it is not connected to a GPS, will this interfere with the transponder? Do I still use my transponder?
My assumption is I do, else how would I squawk the correct codes.

does it have an inbuilt GPS or does that come from Skydemon? Or does this system not use GPS?

I have PI2 If i build my own does this work with a PI2?

I also have an RTL820T2, can this be configured to work?

Sorry for all the question, if there is a detail description of how it all works that may help my understanding!?

Thanks

Admin can correct me if wrong but ...

You should use it in conjunction with (but not connected to) your mode S xponder.
It receives ADS-B (mode S transmitted by others) and sends and receives PilotAware broadcasts which are detected between nearby PilotAware units.

It uses the GPS signal from your device running SkyDemon (or another GPS attached to that device).

I understand Pi 2 is not yet supported but probably not far off.

I have no idea what a RTL820T2 is, so can't help there!

Thank you Ian.

I think i added a couple of letters to the part number! should have just been R820T2 or in full RTL2832u – R820T2 newer DVB-T stick http://www.hamradioscience.com/rtl2832u-r820t-vs-rtl2832u-r820t2/2/

Sorry I see what you mean. The build doc says it should have the "RTL2832U & R820T chipset"

The issue will be whether the R820T2 appears backward compatible with the R820T drivers, or whether the R820T drivers also include support for the R820T2 hardware. As always with these issues, there is only one way to find out ....

Ok thanks.

I will build one with what i have Pi2, 802.11 N and the R820T2 ( i do also have an R820T if it doesn't work!)

I assume i can boot this without the ARF to try things and then add the ARF later or will that cause me issues?

Sorry just noticed another issue, the PI 2 will not work, you need a PI B+
The PI 2 requires some additional drivers for the hardware - this work has not yet been done
Did you read the construction guide ?
I am pretty sure it says Pi B+, but maybe I need to check

Thx

Hi Lee,
no it does say a B+ I just hoped i would be able to update the drivers and get it to work on my existing PI2.

Is it more difficult then this or is it that its just not been tried?

Difficult.

All the methods which are supposed to work - didn't.
There is lots more to do at the moment, so this is down the list for now

out of interest is it the DVB-T that are the issue on RPI2?

Is there a separate thread on RPI2? if so I cant find it!

Cant recall TBH, either that or the WiFi

I don't believe so, it will be a while before getting back to this, lots of issues to be resolved in other areas

Thanks

My bits are arriving! Radio, DVBT, WIFI all here!

No RP B+ yet :(

A couple of things I'm still unsure on!
1. Does the system show users of Flarm and are we visible to them?
2. Can a GPS be directly connected to the PI?

The reason for 2 above is that I'm in a syndicate and not all use SD or any Nav aid, but it would be good if our aircraft was still visible to others!

Ok so reading this thread http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,49.0.html it would seem a GPS is not supported "yet"!

But does it display FLARM? The frequency seems to be the same 868Mhz!

If not could a second DVBT stick be used as it seems to be in this project http://wiki.glidernet.org/links ?

Pilotaware won't display Flarm, which is a closed and encrypted system using a slightly different frequency.
If it did (somebody has hacked the encryption already), it would be under threat of legal action from Flarm to protect its patent rights.

So the short answer today as I understand it is that you would see other Pilotaware equipped aircraft plus those with ADS-B out transponders, but not FLARM, Mode C or Mode S. You can (and should) operate Pilotaware alongside existing transponders.

Please correct me if I'm wrong - also a newbie around here.
