Rosetta / Sky Demon / uAvionix AV-30 combo
« on: August 03, 2023, 02:00:13 pm »
Hi All

I’m currently happily running a Rosetta with traffic display on SD. I wish to install a uAvionix AV-30 EFIS. This can also display traffic (via a wireless link device ‘AV-Link’) from a GDL-90 source.

Questions for anyone who has already done this (or just knows the answers!):

1) Does the Rosetta transmit a wi-fi GDL-90 signal that the AV-30 can use to display traffic?

2) Would this display ALL traffic (PAW, Flarm, etc., as SD does) on the AV-30, not just ADSB?

3) If the answer to 1) is ‘yes’, can the Rosetta ‘talk’ to SD and the AV-30 simultaneously? I.e. happily display live traffic on both devices.

Many thanks for any useful comments.

Chris

Hi Chris
I know nothing about the uAvionics AV-30 but if you are able to point your AV-Link device at the usual 192.168.1.1 url of the pilotaware then it will most certainly pass GDL90 via the wifi.
Someone wiser than me will have to confirm if the AV-30 can use this info for traffic.

You should first log into the configure page of your pilotawar device to check the "Device Connect Setting" and ensure it is set to "All."     It may already be set to GDL90 and if it is you should not need to change anything.  I tend to use "PilotAware UDP" to feed my Tablet running EasyVFR4
The PilotAware device will support multiple devices via the WiFi.
Hope this helps, though someone more knowledgable may be along to contradict me.

Regards
Alan

Hi Chris

I see you liked my reply, could you advise whether you have had any success connecting your device.
It's always good to receive follow up on these queries for any future questions along the same lines.

Regards
Alan

Hi Chris / All,
I also have the same question whether my Rosetta will be able to send traffic information to an AV-30 EFIS. Please could you let me know whether you've managed to get this to work?

Best regards,

Hi Chris Young
You will see from my previous post above I did ask Chris for feedback but have seen nothing further from him.
I can only refer you to my previous, previous post that confirms that PilotAware does indeed pass traffic info via GDL90 Protocol so providing the AV30 AV Link device can be configured to receive from the Paw wifi then I see no reason it should not work.

Confirmation or denial of this would be very useful.

Thanks Alan,
I've ordered the AV-30 with AV-link and will feedback how I get on with getting it to talk to my Rosetta unit.
BTW I've read in the PilotAware manual that there are 4 Device Connect settings:

1. All
2. PilotAware (UDP)
3. GDL90 (UDP)
4. FLARM (TCP)

At the moment we have it set to number 2 and that works well by sending traffic info to SkyDemon. I'm not sure whether to change this setting so that PAW can talk to BOTH SkyDemon and the AV-30? Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this, if not I'll try changing it if it doesn't work on number 2.

Best regards,
Chris.

Hi all,
Just to report back on this thread.

I installed an AV-30 unit in my RV-7 today. I got it talking to the PAW unit via wifi and it seemed to be receiving traffic info.
However I could only see one aircraft on the AV-30 whereas there were several on the PAW radar page.

Anyway I ran out of time to experiment further, but maybe I need to adjust some of the filter settings on the AV-30 to see more.

See attached screenshot of the AV-30 page showing connection to PAW and photo of the unit with the one aircraft.

I'll report back next time.
Regards,
Chris.

See photo of AV-30 traffic screen with only one aircraft showing.

Looks like the picture has been cropped. Have you checked that there are no limits set in the PAW?

For memory where you use the PAW to supply traffic info to another device you leave the limits full out on the PAW and then do the limiting on the target device.

Someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly...

Hi all,
Just to close on this thread. I managed to get my PAW Rosetta to send traffic info to my new AV-30 EFIS via wifi.
The problem I had before was that the filter was too tight on the AV-30. Today I widened the filter to allow all traffic except my own aircraft and I was able to see all the traffic on both my PAW radar and AV-30 traffic page.

See attached photos showing the radar displays on both units. I'll send the wifi settings pages separately.

Happy flying in 2024 to all  :)
Chris.

Yes indeed, here's to a dry January  8)

FYI I've made a video showing the installation and function (see link below). The MFD page and traffic mode is from 6:08 min.
