Internet access for pilotaware
« on: May 25, 2021, 10:33:03 am »
I am trying to provide internet connectivity for the pilotaware unit without utilising a mobile phone hotspot.  This is to utilise the weather information etc.  I was wondering, if I replaced the wi-fi dongle in the unit with one that has a mobile data sim card, whether this would work.  Currently connects to a wi-fi only Samsung tablet on the panel.
Has anyone tried this?

In the absence of any other replies I have to say I'm fairly certain that what you propose will not work as the PilotAware wifi is simply a hotspot to provide connectivity for you tablet etc. to receive the data from it.  It does not provide an internet connection.
The only way I have heard of this being achieved is by using a tablet with a 4g connection which can then pipe the weather info to the likes of Skydemon, EasyVFR or other EFB whilst still receiving the traffic data via wifi.  Tha only other option as far as I am aware is as you hinted, using a mobile phone hotspot to your tablet to achieve the same result.

Someone may know different and correct me if I am wrong.

This is not my idea, but it ought to work.

Costly though...
