Upgrading the Rosetta GNSS dongle
« on: April 02, 2019, 08:55:28 pm »
Hello,

Is it possible to upgrade the Rosetta USB dongle or will it cause stability issues?

The dongle that came with my Rosetta is Diymalls G28U7FUSB. I tried to do a google search on it but didn't find much http://51yhgou.com/item/index/iid/578098048902.html. However it seems that it only supports GPS and GLONASS with the Ublox- G7020 chip. https://www.u-blox.com/en/product/ubx-g7020-series

As i live in northern Europe Galileo and dual frequency support would be quite nice :)

Is it possible to upgrade the USB dongle with a M8030-KT chip (https://www.u-blox.com/en/product/ubx-m8030-series) and will it work with Rosetta?

maybe something like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/TOPGNSS-USB-GPS-GLONASS-GALILEO-Receiver-module-antenna-GNSS100L-USB-GNSS-GPS-GLONASS-receiver-GMOUSE-Industrial/32952018577.html This have Galileo and supports WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS.

UPDATE April 02, 2019, 10:41:43 pm:
I have googled around for quite a while now. It seems that this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0716BK5NT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_Log2Bb0HWP1CM is the best update regarding GNSS for now.

Hi trettum,

I ‘think’ that’s the same GPS as the one now being supplied in the newer Rosetta’s, but it would be best to get Keith or Lee to confirm compatibility before you order one. Hopefully they will read this shortly and respond.

Best Regards

Peter

Ok, so i got the new u-blox 8 from https://www.amazon.com/Stratux-GPYes-2-0-u-blox-unit/dp/B0716BK5NT.

This new dongle supports Galileo and SBAS. I now have twice the refresh rate and see double the amount of satellites! :o

The original also has SBAS (EGNOS here in Europe, WAAS in the US).

Anyone tried theirs with the Ublox PC software?  https://www.u-blox.com/en/product/u-center

Did mine and it said it was a Ublox 7 chipset  ???

Virtually all “u-blox” chipsets from China are compatible but not genuine u-blox chips. The price for 10,000 of the genuine modules is way higher than chipsets from China.  The genuine ones can the programmed with various settings, the clone ones accept the command but don’t actually store the setting.

They all work, maybe not to the full potential of the genuine ones, but then given the price that is to be expected.

I got my Rosetta yesterday having traded in my classic.

I noticed fairly quickly that the GPS chip was having difficulty getting a fix when I was playing with it inside where my classic would get a location straight away. Looking in the case, the chip it shipped with is the DIYMALLS U-Blox 7, which I assume all Rosetta's come with.

With my classic, I had bought a GPS mouse on a long lead which I threw over the back seat of the aircraft to get a good 'view' out of the back window. I removed the DIYMALLS chip and plugged the GPS Mouse in to the Rosetta and it was a drastic improvement (i.e. back to how the classic behaved)

From seeing it mentioned on this thread, I downloaded the U-Blox application for windows and out of curiosity compared both USB receivers against each other. I noted that the one that ships with the Rosetta is a U-Blox 7 and seems only to connect to GPS and nothing else. The GPS mouse that I had been using with my classic comes up as a U-Blox M8/8 and connects happily to both GPS and GLONASS (which may explain why it seems to pick up a fix quicker and in more places)

As comparison, the receiver that ships with the rosetta wouldn't acquire a fix in my house under a window (it would intermittently see about 3 GPS satellites and then lose them)
The 8/M8 picks up a fix in the centre of my house with 12 satellites (a mix of Russian and American) It's night and day so I have left the mouse plugged in and used the hole in the bottom of the Rosetta case (covered by the labelling) to run the cable out of, and stuck the mouse to the front with a 3M command strip.

I didn't see any of the Gallileo satellites at all, so wonder if the firmware is old as Firmware 3.01 for the 8/M8 introduced this ability. Or it could be a fake, as mentioned above somewhere.

I'm sure the 'original' would be absolutely fine in the air looking out an aircraft window, but the stronger performance and willingness to connect to GLONASS as well as GPS means I'll be keeping the stronger performer.

With my 8/M8 GPS Mouse:

Ah, that's interesting. Thanks! Looking on the articles online though I think it should have been back online today? I'll try again next week and see if the results are any different!

A GPS mouse should also be better due to the lack of interference from the SDR dongle(s). The standard GPS always works better on a USB extension when moved further away from the unit. However in real life, sat on a coaming or under a canopy, it doesn't matter much, as reception there is unhindered.

Does your window have a heat reflective coating? Most double glazing has and it's always best to open the window the throw the GPS unit outside in such circumstances! The coating is metallic.

Take the unit outside it needs time to collect the satellite data
after that it will be OK
