« on: August 10, 2018, 11:23:27 am »

Please can anyone advise if it is possible (and if so How?) to feed the output from PowerFlarm Portable to a Rossetta and so get the best of both world on SkyDemon
Thanks

Hi Colin,
Yes it is possible and quite a few have done it.

You need an USB to RS232 lead. I'm sure the instructions have been posted before. Try here

Thanks Ian
I am not sure that link provides the answer however and a search does not seem to yield any answers.

In what way does that link not provide the answers?

Hi,

I have a Powerflarm connected to my PAW.
Using the FDTI adaptor Ian linked above, you will also need a RJ45 plug to fit the Powerflarm data port  socket on the rear.
FTDI lead available from Farnell http://uk.farnell.com/ftdi/usb-rs232-we-1800-bt-0-0/cable-usb-a-rs232-serial-convertor/dp/1686450
Make off the end of the FTDI lead to the RJ45 as follows:- ( you can use a old computer patch lead and splice the two together).
FTDI goes into PAW and the RJ45 plugs into the back of the flarm.

FTDI ------- ----Flarm
Red   RX          pin5 TX
Orange  TX      pin 6 RX  (not needed but I connected anyway)
Black   Ov        pin 8 OV

See page 11 of the manual for the dataport pinout https://flarm.com/wp-content/uploads/man/PowerFLARM_Portable_Manual_EN.pdf
Set the PAW USB port you have plugged the FTDI into as "Flarm in" and set the baud to 19200 in the PAW settings.
I think I set in the Flarm Data-Port menu set to "NEMA sentences only" as I used the  ADSB in of  PAW. (I didn't use the adsb antenna on the powerflarm)
See page 32 of the flarm manual.

It's easier in practice as you just connect PAW and Flarm together with two wires and set some settings in the menus.

Many thanks for all the comments and advice.
I am unable to find out if Rosetta has more than one usb port. I am assuming it has one which is used as a power input port does it have another which can be used as a data in port?

Yes Rosetta has two spare USB ports that can used for driving information to and from several external devices. Peter Robertson has done a great paper on how to integrate FLARM. I will send it to you and put it into the Documents folder on PilotAware.com for all to see for advice. Too big to post here.

 Thanks Peter
