General Discussion / Re: Strange Pilotaware tracking outside the UK
« Last Post by buzz53 on July 09, 2025, 09:10:33 am »
Thanks for the background info but note my friend had no Igrid connection so I'm none the wiser how this flight was tracked and why the datapoints are 2 minutes apart. The ID was 405BE9 departing Thursday 3rd July at 9:06Z.

As far as you know, do classic OGN sites outside the UK receive PAW?

There are many routes that data is now passed to/from our servers
As you quite rightly say, ground detection is one method, and that can be via ATOM stations or OGN receivers
Additionally, the airborne systems are also capable of using the cellular network (IGRID) to send and receive data when the system is paired with a phone
Finally SkyGrid allows passing of data via an intermediary to any of the downstream connections, ie ATOM and IGRID

So there are multiple paths that are in use simultaneously
Thx

General Discussion / Strange Pilotaware tracking outside the UK
« Last Post by buzz53 on July 08, 2025, 11:26:19 pm »
Warning: geeky! I noticed something very odd at the weekend and wonder if anyone can explain it.

I was using www.glideandseek.com to monitor a friend’s flight from the south of the UK to Le Mans (France). GlideandSeek displays data from the Open Glider Network, to which PAW groundstations contribute data, making PAW users visible in addition to the FLARM users. My friend has a PAW Classsic without airborne internet connectivity.

He was tracked perfectly to about mid-channel and then disappeared. I believe there are very few PAW groundstations outside the UK so at first sight this might be expected but I understand that “normal” OGN stations without the PAW hardware added (the vast majority of those outside the UK) should also receive PAW as well as their native FLARM using their SDR dongles. A bit of research however showed that this OGN receiver functionality reportedly does not currently work. So the loss of tracking outside the UK still made some sense.

Now (finally!) here’s the interesting bit. I later checked the flight in the PAW database using the PAW Groundstation replay facility which I think is now quite well known. At first sight the same happened:  perfect tracking but only to mid-channel. However looking more carefully, there are individual track points logged every 2 minutes all the way to the destination. You have to look very carefully to spot the individual red dots.

I can’t figure out how this is happening. I don’t believe there is PAW groundstation coverage all along this route and if there was then surely there would be a normal complete track.  I also don’t believe there can be any air to air relaying going on and there is no internet connectivity. The only other option is that the OGN stations are in fact receiving PAW equipped aircaft and PAW are importing this data back into their own system which I didn't think they did. But in that case why would GlideAndSeek not display this same intermittent data, and why is it intermittent?

Hope this isn’t too garbled. Can anyone shed any light on what’s happening please?

Home router is not on the same subnet

The wifi networks are on 2.4ghz but only show up sometimes on the scan

The phone does have password for home wifi.

The fourth light on the FX is blue, which I believe indicates no connection to iGrid server. But I can browse internet through the Pilotaware wifi connection indicating it is connected to internet through my home broadband.

Also when I connected to my iphone hotspot I get the same - no igrid connection.

Is your home router on the same subnet as the PilotAware fixed address? Does your home router use the 192.168.1.x subnet?

Are the networks you know of on 2.5GHz?

Does your phone have the password for your home WiFi?

Technical Support / Wi-fi issues on Pilotaware FX
« Last Post by a1650772 on June 18, 2025, 10:21:33 pm »
I have been having a couple of issues with Wifi connection:

(1) I connect to Pilotaware network on my phone and through Pilotaware setup at 192.168.1.1 I connect to my home broadband for iGrid but I don't get iGrid connection. However, internet works on the phone through the Pilotaware indicating Pilotaware is connected to the home broadband. iGrid status remains red on status page.

(2) When away from home, I don't seem to be able to get Pilotaware to show any Wifi networks when I scan for networks even when I know there are several in close proximity.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Technical Support / Re: Networking on the Rosetta FX for iGrid
« Last Post by steveu on June 12, 2025, 11:21:06 am »
I'm reliably informed that the wireless network the FX generates on 192.168.1.x cannot be the same subnet as the Internet device uses for providing Internet access.

Yesterday I changed my mobile broadband box to 192.168.10.x and whilst the network light remained blue, I suspect because indoors I didn't get GPS lock and thus fully functioning iGrid wasn't possible, the FX did download the latest software and successfully install it.

I'll test it it with a mobile Internet box out in the open, and when I do I'll probably be looking to mark this thread as solved, but for now, @Mods, please can we leave it open?

Technical Support / Networking on the Rosetta FX for iGrid

I'm trying to find out if there is a network issue when using an FX on a Wifi network which is on the same subnet as the FX has to be on for traffic info to SD.

Example - I'm snagging an FX in a flex, using the Wifi in the hangar. The Wifi router is on the 192.168.1.x subnet. The Wifi router's gateway is on 192.168.1.254 in order to avoid a clash with the FX which will need to be on 192.168.1.1 for the traffic info to work. The Wifi router's DHCP range is 50 - 99, so there will also be no clashes.

Does the FX get confused if its own wireless network and the iGrid access are on the same subnet, in this case, 192.168.1.0/24?

When the FX is powered up, ADS-B, P3i and GPS lights all go green. The networking one only ever goes blue.

The wireless connection is on in iGrid, but iGrid remains red in the status.

I suspect that when I used my small wireless dongle/MiFi previously, it all worked because the MiFi is on the 192.168.8.x subnet, that is 192.168.8.0/24

Any thoughts on this, and any network restrictions for me to be aware of?

Technical Support / Re: ICAO HEX Code, not Callsign

Lots of HEX codes floating around today. The ones over Parham are likely to be Flarm, whereas the aircraft one the sea is probably SkyEcho.
