Technical Support / Re: iGrid Dongle - working or not?
« Last Post by Altomar718 on August 16, 2025, 08:16:16 am »
Peter - Thank for the reply - sorry for the delay as I ha not been to the airfield but think it's sorted. I didn't realise the PAW and the Hotspot show up on the Network page and I had named them similarly, so in effect, had two ! - I deleted both and renamed and configured it all again and hopefully, now I know which is which, I hope it will work but still have to try it connection the the mobile network - Thanks

Hi Again Judd,

Thanks for the update. Good to know it is now working as intended (and hopefully some clarification for those others reading this).

i will update the thread title to indicate this has now been resolved.

Best Regards

Technical Support / Re: FX needs reconnecting to WiFi data source on each power up
« Last Post by dperalta on August 13, 2025, 09:54:17 pm »
Thanks, thought so but problem is we have FX and the 4G dongle powered by the same USB power adapter behind the panel. Means we can’t delay FX power up to after the 4G power up, unless we modify the panel with a dedicated circuit breaker and another USB power adapter. Obviously not ideal.  What is the recommended setup for giving FX a mobile data connection if not through a dongle?

If FX could either delay the interval between the 3 retries, increase the no. of retries to cover first 60 seconds after boot up, I think that should cater for the latency in all these mobile data dongles.

This is what I have found I need to do. It seems to me it's a bit like having the hotspot page open on the iPhone before turning on the FX. I start my FX after the 4G dongle has had a little while to do its thing and I find it will connect automatically.

Posted prior to Judd's Update above ^^^^

Hi again Judd,

Not trying to be 'smart', but If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend having a good read at the full FX instructions, available via this link...

https://www.pilotaware.com/kb/fx/getting-started

I was reading them again myself last night and - despite extensive involvement in FX testing for a considerable period of time prior to its release - I learned (or was reminded of) several important points by doing so. Hence my recommendation.

Please keep us posted as to what you find when you get back to your aircraft.

Best Regards

Peter

Yes ive had the new license key and updated, its licensed to 02 august 2026.

UPDATE, @ 15.35 this afternoon Igrid has connected through Ipad cellular, wifi and hotspot, so i will leave everything switched on for a couple of hours and see how it goes.

Thanks for getting back to me. It’s a usb data-only 4G dongle with its own SIM card. Pic attached. It’s powered by a dedicated usb cable and not by the FX unit. I think it takes a few seconds longer to fully boot up than the FX unit so potentially its SSID is not visible to FX when FX powers up. However FX does not appear to keep scanning for known SSID’s and automatically connect if a previously registered one appears.

You are correct, the FX does not continually scan, there is a very good technical reason for this to do with performance.
Once powered up it will perform 3 scans, then it will revert to a manual connection mode.

Can I ask you to try the following sequence

1. power up the 4g dongle
2. confirm you can see the 4g dongle ssid from a device - eg iphone, ipad
3. power up FX

Does the FX now connect to the 4G device ?

Hi Peter,
I dont think cellular connection will be a problem as I've taken the FX and various mobile devices with me to try getting a connection throughout my daily commute, i have unlimited data on all my device contracts.
The Ipad sounds like a possibility. I will take another look at the weekend and post here any outcome. The issue seems to have arisen when i tried connecting on the day the licence was due for renewal, got a message saying licence expired so couldn't connect. I have reinstalled the latest FX update but no change, though this is possibly a red herring. Hope all goes well with your hospital visit. Kind regards Judd.

Hi Judd,

Not sure exactly what is going on here, but you should be aware of the following: -

A Blue iGRID LED indicates that your FX is connected to your cellular hotspot,  but that the device providing the hotspot DOES NOT HAVE A CONNECTION TO THE PilotAware SERVERS. There could be several reasons for this, including lack of accessible cellular masts at the height or location where you are flying, that your data allowance has run out, or that there is some other complication preventing your 'Hotspot Device' communicating with our servers via your chosen mobile network.

It is also possible that recent updates in the iPadOS firmware of your Ipad Mini 6 might now preclude the iPad providing a hotspot via its 4/5G connection while simultaneously processing data received from Pilotaware via its internal WiFi. I deliberately don't use my Sim Equipped iPad Mini to provide the hotspot for my FX - preferring instead to take the hotspot from my Galaxy S23 phone, so I can't say if that is the case or not (and I can't test it for a while as I am due to go into hospital in a few days - sorry).

In addition IIRC, (though this might have changed since iGRID was first introduced), the system was designed to limit data use by automatically restricting iGRID where you already have a solid connection to one or more ATOM Stations and are already receiving all relevant data via the Ground Uplink from the ATOM(s).

While the presence of a GPS lock is essential for determining the position of your PilotAware - PilotAware will not for example transmit its own position and can't report the positions of other traffic if it doesn't know exactly where it is itself - I'm not aware of what effect a lack of GPS position would have on iGRID, though I can see that this might preclude uplink of data if the PilotAware effectively doesn't know where it is. But you say that you are getting a GPS lock - so this should be academic in your case.

i will, however, make some further enquiries and get back to you.

Best Regards

Peter
