General Discussion / Re: PAW with uAvionix Skyecho 2
« on: September 29, 2019, 09:35:59 am »
HI.
I have SkyEcho 2 installed along with PAW. Both work well.
The combination of use I made was simple.
PAW funcionality is kept standard and provides GPS to SkyDemon.
SE2 is set purely for ADS-B OUT. I could if necessary use SE2 to interact with SkyDemon and especially as I have FLARM subscription to SkyDemon at moment.
I havent used it as the OGN arrangement is working very well in my area of high Glider activity.
Thats my take on it and based around the fact I have a non-Electrical aircraft. Just a 7A LifePO4 Battery Pack drives everything.
Hope that helps.

For the GPS Dongle use USB extension cable running to cockpit coaming from installed PAW.
I've done that and its always picked up plenty of satellites.
My cable is about 1 metre.

Plenty of lengths on eBay and Amazon.

Instead of living up to your name Grumpy why dont you describe what kit you are using and how you are trying do the upgrade!
If you live in the WestCountry. I'm more than happy to help.
The upgrade works really well so it will be something small.

Technical Support / Re: Losing connection with switching apps in iOS

I may be particularly thick this morning, probably grumpy too but....
I dont understand what is the relevance of IFR Apps being in the company of Pilot Aware and Skydemon, both of which I thought were VFR aids?

Phil and the Team.
Latest Software fully installed and working on RPi3.
Used SD Card Formatter on iMac and then copied in contents. Initial set up BOOT about 10 minutes.
Thanks Team!

I'm not advertising on behalf of Richard but the Charge4 Series of USB Supply Units work extremely well.
As an earliy adopter of PAW I had troubles with power consistency using cigarette lighter adapters. Noise and inconsistent 5V supply!
I fitted a Charge2 and PAW is rock solid now.
A Hangar resident chose the Charge4 and can affirm the same consistent reliability. Its worth that little bit extra over and nightmare effeciencies of the the cigarette light type.
IMHO.

I have a Classic with RPi3B engine. Runs very well. Everything was placed in Enclosure and tie wrapped to the aircraft frame.
I used: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XSGHKFP/?coliid=I2RGZUOAVYQ7U1&colid=T0NKVZWFDAJ2&psc=1
Left out the Fan and all USB component connection are inside the Box except GPS.
The whole arrangemnt has proved very resilient and drop outs virtually nil.
I'm not sure what additional advantage there is in the Rosetta Bridge but until persauded otherwise my present arrangement continues.

General Discussion / Re: New version of PAW
« on: May 30, 2019, 07:57:44 pm »
Will be nice to have an updated version but I will state here and now that the present version has been very stable on my RPi3.
I think I'll hang back a day or two to be sure it all works.....which I'm sure it will!
Thanks your efforts.

Technical Support / Re: SkyDemon loss of connection

I had similar problems as you. I have LifePO4 (7 Amp Hour) and it powered Radio and PAW with iPhone 6.
It would drop PAW consistently. When 8.33 became mandated I upgraded to Yaesu 550 but wired that separate from Battery with a 9V supply provided by 12V - 9V Board with regulation.
The iPhone 6 and PAW are now powered via a Charge 2 Unit and the problem has completely gone. Another aircraft in my Hangar chose a Charge 4 after PAW inconsistency.
That too is working 100% reliably. Power/Voltage needs to be adequately above lowest limits of RPi.

My first suspicion would be 5V power to PAW even with your regulated supply.
Can you give some details on that supply?

I did have a read through as much as I could tolerate and followed the offer to fill in Call for Evidence.
My premise followed what we can have now in the form of PAW and SE2.
That my Strip is under a CTA which no longer offers LARS and has no ADS-B Surveillance and not likely to have for a while.
In short I have to look after myself.
The illustration I gave as a light aircraft owner and operative was as follows.
SE2 gives me a SIL 1 ADS-B signature including Sqauwk of 7000 as default.
SE2 is set as Transmit only.
My PAW does the rest including FLARM via OGN and conspicuity to other PAW Users as well as ADS-B IN.
Add to that some awareness of Mode C and S and as an Individual I cant do much more.
Maintaining a Look out, listening to en route ATC or using their service whilst en route and use of SafetyCom at unlicensed type airfields adds a final layer.
To date PAW via Audio warnings mainly has done a great job with the full gamut of warnings for ADS-B, Transponder and FLARM awareness and the bonus of PAW awareness.
I hope the CAA is better organised than our BREXIT Government at this time and they accept any solution has to be affordable as well as useable for a significant take up.
Lets see what happens.

Regarding SkyEcho 2. I'm using it as well as my trusty PAW but only use it as the following.
I've just set it as ADS-B Out as I have no Tpx. It transmits that reliably with 7000 Squawk.
PAW is used in collaboration with SkyDemon and mainly reports conflicts via Audio connection.
PAW is solid and allows me even more conspicuity in both IN/OUT with FLARM and other PAW Users.
Have I gone mad?

My SkyEcho has just been changed by Uavionix as the initial builds may have not always transmitted my data.
It was FOC and done very efficiently.
