General Discussion / Recommended Power supply?
« on: February 03, 2018, 07:19:01 am »
I have tried searching but not had much success (probably asking the wrong question) sooooo.....

I power all my USB devices (PAW and 2 tablets) in the aircraft from an Anker Powerdrive 5 as originally recommended for PAW. I chopped the plug off and wired it into a dedicated circuit breaker in the RV. Works brilliantly.
I have a number of chums who also use these successfully, often as a 'fix' for PAW reliability (brown-out) issues.

All hunky dory so far.

Trouble is I now have a new plane to plumb another PAW into and the Powerdrive 5 is no longer available. What is the new recommended alternative?

I would like one with a lead (I can cut off) as fag lighter connections are so unreliable, and I don't want to fit such a socket in the new plane.

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere and I haven't found it. If so please point me there.

I think we have the necessary two wrongs so that might make it white...  :o

Thanks both for the tips.

I noticed a fan really needs to go in the end or side.

Will suggest the white case to my chums!

I will dig out my old Garmin GPS III Pilot and use that for a bit of GPS testing, assuming I can actually get a GPS fix in the garage in the first place.
Well it appears to make little difference.

Looks like I have been wasting everyones time on this.  ::)

Thanks.

Technical Support / Max Temperature (and issues) for a PAW

I have a chum who has, and loves, a PAW Classic.
He has it installed in 'plain sight' under a bubble canopy.
We were all out in Scotland last weekend with barely a cloud in the sky.

I'll let him explain further:

Yesterday I took off on our way up to Plockton (Janet was trying out Geoff’s spare ANR headset) and I was getting a terrible white noise in standby mode, so I got Janet to swap back to her own headset, still had the white noise, so I tried resetting settings on the (Trig TY91) radio, still got white noise! Janet then said the Pilot Aware box was red hot (suppose it had been baking in the sun whilst parked out at Oban). So I removed the power to PA, and suddenly the radio became absolutely perfect again!
PA obviously does not like getting hot! I covered up the PA box with a white shirt whilst parked up at Plockton, and it worked perfectly with no radio interference on our way home to Sleap.
Worth mentioning I think!
Is this an expected 'failure mode'?

Obviously a black box of electronics in a greenhouse is going to have issues, as my chum realises.

Just thought I'd pass this on.

I have a 'white and raspberry' standard Pi case on my home-brewed PAW and have never had such issues, but since I've put it under the dash, and in light of the above, I am now considering putting a fan in the case: should be easy with that case's removable lid!

From a technical point of view would it be better to set the fan to blow cold air into the case, or suck the warm air out?

Oh for goodness sake read the the manual
Not generally in favour of 'flaming' but in this case - what he said!

RTFM!

Seems I may have created a monster here!

I have the Starduster fuselage all covered, silvered and painted (lairy yellow - lovely) in my garage. Unfortunately getting it out is going to require removal of the undercarriage - not difficult, but not quick either - so testing the hypothesis in the open air is not really an option.

My PAW is now installed behind the dash of the RV, so extracting that is non-trivial too!

But...

I will dig out my old Garmin GPS III Pilot and use that for a bit of GPS testing, assuming I can actually get a GPS fix in the garage in the first place.

What are the R-Pi requirements for a PAW/OGN station?

I have/know of a couple of redundant original Pis left over from the shield days that I could donate to a PAW/OGN station being considered at my airfield.

Would they have enough grunt or is it all Pi 2 now?

Thanks for the info.

Looks like my 8Gb that was lying around turns out to be the 'right' size!

Do you know which aircraft types use Ceconite coatings?
AFAIK pretty well every older fabric covered type you can think of that isn't still using linen!

Evans VP1s (had one), Piper Cubs (and variants), Luscombes (where they have fabric wings), Stolp Starduster (I'm restoring one) and associated Acrodusters, Acrosports etc, Pitts Specials, Taylor Titch & Mono etc, Druine Turbulent,  Steen Skybolt, Jodels, Austers, Aviat Husky...

To name very few...

Ceconite is a DuPont trade name (I think - my partner in restoration crime does the fabric work). There are other , similar heat and/or dope shrunk coverings (including linen) but pretty well all of then use an aluminium powder in dope coating as UV protection for the fabric.

Ever wondered why airships and many WW1 era aircraft were silver?

Quick one - what is the size of the SD card in a bought PAW Classic?

I have a home-brewed PAW from the shield days and just use a spare 8Gb SD card I had lying around at the time.

Just wondering whether there is anything to be gained (more log space?) from a larger capacity card.

... and get the tee shirt ...

What do you guys think?
I'd buy one. The T-shirt that is. No, really!
Got my RV-6 one on today, as it happens.

Slightly more seriously.
How is the UP-OGN roll out being co-ordinated?
Are the existing OGN sites being contacted to persuade them to participate or are we hoping they will show an interest?

There is a gliding club near my home that is apparently an OGN station. Just wondering if/when they might go UP-OGN.

I have a fabric aircraft question related to mounting the antennas inside the fabric skin.

What is the screening capability of such fabric(s)?

I am mainly considering how the low power of the P3I transmissions, and the miniscule signal strength of the GPS signals cope with Ceconite (and similar) fabric. Such coverings are applied and then UV protected by the application of the silver (aluminium powder mixed in the dope) coats that render the fabric completely opaque: NO light gets through properly applied Ceconite AT ALL.
I would guess that would definitely screen GPS transmissions, and could conceivably attenuate P3I transmissions.

I am sure that it has been mentioned before that certain (domestic and industrial) window coatings are metallic and quite effectively screen low power transmissions. This makes me wonder what methods the newer fabric coverings (Poly Fibre, Oratex etc) use for UV protection and how opaque to radio signals they are.
