Technical Support / Re: Combo PAW, Skydemon & Dynon Skyview installation

DavidN,
This was posted on the Flyer GA forum by Uavionix (Ramsey) on 30 July 2019:

"Hi all, the UAT FIS-B trials are currently suspended. That is not to say they will be suspended forever. The transmitter assets remain in place. There are two drivers behind this decision.

1. uAvionix conducted a survey a few months back through direct email, social media, posts on this forum, and through skyDemon's newsletter. The results of that survey clearly indicated there would be little interest from the GA community to pay for such a service. There was a great deal of interest from the community in having the service provided to them at no cost.

2. In order for a service to become a commercial offering, the 978MHz frequency must be allocated for this purpose in the UK. Our understanding is that CAA and OFCOM are currently in negotiations for this very thing. We are being supportive where we can, but the details of that negotiation are unknown to us and we haven't any understanding of what that timeline might be. We are hopeful.

We did not produce a formal announcement in effect as an experiment in itself. We wanted to understand if the removal of the service would be noticed and give an indication of how much it was being used. Sadly, it took multiple months before the first inquiry came to us.

Hopefully it can be recognized that this was not an inexpensive endeavor. If we can generate demand, perhaps there will be a future business model of some sort."

Tell me more!!!
Can the OGN-R station communicate by wifi to my home router?
I would want to fit the equipment in my garage loft, so the antenna has good coverage, but no cabled internet there.

Steve,

I am also based at Popham and, a few months ago, was checking some "anomalies" with aircraft not being detected by 360radar.
I was surprised to find out that 360radar MLAT coverage isn't that great in the Popham area unless aircraft are higher than, iirc, 1800-2000 ft.
Phil (from 360radar) sent me some receiver coverage maps to show the issue.

This winter I may set up a 360radar receiver at home to improve coverage for the Popham area.

There is an issue with some Funke transponders regarding the varying speeds as seen on FR24.
I think you need to upgrade to the latest firmware and software version to fix this problem but Funke want around EUR 500 for the upgrade.
My friend, also experiencing that groundspeed issue, decided it wasn't worth it and has now got a Trig TT21 and their certified GPS source.

General Discussion / Re: 360radar network

Hi Lee/Phil,

Yes, the transponder in question is a Funke...
Thanks for the explanation on how360radar and  FR24 processes the data.
I had asked FR24 previously but didn't really get an answer. They just said it was "faulty aircraft equipment"!

Thanks

Thanks for the detailed reply!
I was aware of the on-going discussion on another forum about data accuracy but that wasn't the reason for my question.
I was monitoring a friend's L4 Cub flying from IOW across to Cherbourg yesterday (for D Day events) and was looking at his displayed ground speed.
He has Mode S (no ADS-B Out) and PAW but PAW isn't connected to his transponder.
Another friend with Mode S and ADS-B Out always shows significantly varying ground speeds when monitored with FR24. 0.0 groundspeed in 360radar.
Just trying to understand the differences in ground speeds seen and equipment etc.

FYI, the L4 Cub was visible to mid channel (flying at 3000ft) but then disappeared completely (he did make it safely to Cherbourg!).
Can't be many 360radar receiving sites in northern France as a few would be needed to MLAT his Mode S only transmissions.

General Discussion / 360radar network

General question: Is the 360radar.co.uk ground receiver network capable of receiving PAW transmissions from aircarft?
If so, does the PAW data enhance MLAT processing by 360radar?

Thanks

Tony

The Trig TT21 can also display the received GPS position. Good way to ensure it is receiving the data okay.

I haven't tried it yet but is it likely my Samsung S8 smartphone's earphone socket can drive the external audio input of a Trig TY91 radio?
Thinking of how I can get Skydemon EC audio announcements into my headsets.
Would a direct wired connection work of would a pre-amp be required?

I have an appropriate crimping tool.
If you want to post the wires to me I can crimp the pins on. Cheaper than me posting the crimping tool to you!

As mentioned, pins simply push in but won't come out unless you use an extract tool. Check your connector pin markings/orientation!

Technical Support / Re: Using PAW as a source for ADS-B ES out
« on: December 03, 2018, 12:24:22 pm »
Hi Peter,

My friend confirmed that the groundspeed as displayed in SkyDemon was correct.

As the same GPS source is used for both SD and ADS-B Out purposes that means only two possible causes for wrong groundspeed?
1. PAW possibly is doing 'something" to the data stream being sent to the transponder.
2. The transponder is not formatting the received data correctly before transmission.

Regards

Tony

Hi Peter,

Lee now has the raw data file from the ADS-B transmissions and we are getting the PAW track file.
I am fairly sure that SD displayed the groundspeed correctly so I wonder if something is happening to the data inside the Funke transponder?

Thanks

I can post the received ADS-B data as received on the ground (thanks to Phil Lee). Will that be good enough?

The investigation continues!
I have now obtained the raw ADS-B Out data from a recent flight and see that the "groundspeed" data within the ADS-B Out datastream seems quite wrong.
For example, it should be around 75 kts for this flight but the data output in the ADS-B stream is in the range 24.0 to 32.0

Is any data processing/conversion carried out by PAW before passing the data to the transponder?

Well, groundspeed is indeed transmitted in the ADS-B Out data stream, so it isn't calculated by the flight tracking websites.
So, I wonder why Planefinder shows smooth and correct ground speeds whereas FR24 shows silly groundspeeds quite often...
Anyone else on here with a Funke TRT800 transponder and ADS-B Out?
