I just loaded the pilotaware website via google on Chrome. I got a warning that the website (https:) was 'unsafe'. I know what that actually means. I just thought I'd give a heads up. It could be just my setup that has triggered it. I'm using a Linux Mint laptop.

General Discussion / ATOM-GRID
« on: June 23, 2020, 11:15:48 pm »
I fly from Blackbushe.
Is there a GRID-ATOM in the locality (I know there's a PAw ground station, but I don't know who's got it)? Would it be useful to have one? How much will it cost me to make one if I want to donate it and can find someone to run it (I think I can). Will someone build it for me if I'm feeling rich and lazy?

Supplemental question. can I get 2 internal antennae for the Rosetta with custom length cables? How much? (OK 2 questions, shoot me)

General Discussion / Practical experience using Mode S/3D version
« on: June 24, 2019, 09:32:23 am »
I've just started using ModeS/3D and thought it worth sharing how it's going.
My PAw is a semi-permanent install with mounted internal antennae, internal power and sound connected to the Audio panel.
I have alerting set for +/- 2,000ft and 5km
I haven't implemented Bluetooth - yet

- I hear 2 - 3 times as much located traffic as before which makes it easier to discriminate between 'information' and targets that really need locating [edit]this is a big deal and a huge increase in capability
- within a mile of the circuit I tend to switch off the sound to avoid distraction (it's a button on the panel) only when it's v busy
- I see more aircraft now, farther out
- the PAw gives better information for SA than a listening squawk or Basic Service (I still like to have a relevant frequency set for the airspace I'm in)
- I prefer PAw voice to the SD generated warnings (too much SD airspace)
- PAw can sometimes generate multiple warnings for the same target - I'd like that reduced
- looking at .trk files there was occasional position jumping, ~1/2 a mile, it was no factor
- because of by aerial positioning there is occasional airframe masking at 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock, also no factor

I used it yesterday on the 95 ship Project Propeller fly-in to Coventry. that's a big help approaching a busy environment when traffic is merging
- it was very handy to have it pick up converging, almost parallel traffic on the way in
- I switched off sound with 3 miles to run when I judged that my SA was optimised and I should deal with outside and the radio
- on departure we could track traffic passing overhead which due to visibility we never saw, but it was comforting to know where it was and we did deviate track to provide better separation
- approaching home base we tracked a Nordo at 500'agl (or 400'), 1 mile ahead, similar track, who looked like he was joining but flew round the edge of the ATZ and left. We never saw him, I was glad to know he was there.

Technical Support / PAw bridge fail? (no, SOLVED)
« on: June 12, 2019, 09:03:25 pm »
My PAw has been working fine in a 'semi-permanent' install with internal antennae, ship power and connected to the audio.
After a trip in a different aircraft with the PAw working as 'stand alone' on returning to my base aircraft I seem to have developed a problem in the bridge, I get red indicators for PAw and baro.
When the PAw boots up it ends up with the Bridge led flashing red in groups of 4 with an occasional (after every 3 groups?) green flash
Plugging a screen into the HDMI seems to give a normal progression to the login prompt, I haven't managed to capture that log
Does this require a new Bridge?
Enclosed, screenshots and log

Full disclosure, I've loaded a newer operating system than 20180520. But the error/problem occurs with 20180520 as well

Technical Support / Detecting own aircraft
« on: May 11, 2019, 09:14:53 pm »
My Rosetta is normally in 1 aircraft, but I took it for a European trip and reconfigured the ICAO code and the registration. The Pilotaware was still reporting me as a conflict. Its the hex ICAO code that triggers that isn't it?
I checked it on ginfo and the PAw page, but the warnings continued.
I feel like I've missed something obvious, and the trip was not a good time to fault find. Little help here Mr wizard?

General Discussion / Skydemon + PAw, simultaneous audio output
« on: March 11, 2019, 10:40:46 pm »
I tried SD today with a Rosetta PAw, using GDL90. PAw connected to the audio panel, SD sound connected via tablet / Bluetooth to my headset (with a different voice).
The runway annunciation and airspace warnings were great. GPS traffic worked fine.
There was 'traffic' target in the tower, a PAw base station I think, but SD thought it was an aircraft and warned me of it while PAw ignored it.
I prefer to also receive the bearingless targets that PAw provides, there were a few Mode S and Mode C targets around.
At present I think I have to choose which input goes to the audio panel, SD from the tablet or PAw via phono cable.
I use the GDL90 protocol with PAw with 2 SDRs, so the weather can be received aloft. My weather tab shows the red dot. I just need to fly over SD HQ or Redhill to get an update. I'll let you know.

Help me integrate please. I WANT SD audio (including GPS threats) AND PAw bearingless, through 1 channel.

General Discussion / Receiving inflight weather
« on: February 17, 2019, 11:00:03 pm »
My setup includes the two low power SDRs, which, looking at the coverage maps, and info on the build version (latest) should mean I receive weather where I am around Blackbushe/Popham/Reading.
Is there anything in the .trk file to confirm I'm receiving? I've read that there's a green dot on the SD Weather tab. But I don't check/notice that.
What I'd like to know is how to tell when I'm receiving the weather from the 5 transmitters that are set up.

General Discussion / PAw traffic audio or Skydemon audio?
« on: February 13, 2019, 05:05:05 pm »
Has anyone tried the SD beta with traffic audio generated by SD?
Is there a way to see how the two systems differ in the way they issue warnings?

I'm about to start trialling the SD system, I fear it may be confusing if I have both running together. I can change the voice in SD
Ideally I'd like to see how they both react to a set script, say from a PAw TRK file, rather than leaving it to chance while flying.

Technical Support / GPS via Garmin 430 + Rosetta upgrade vs DIY Rosetta
« on: August 28, 2018, 09:27:06 pm »
I couldn't find this in the forum:
Is it possible to use the Garmin 430 to give GPS data to Rosetta?

I've just plumbed the Rosetta into out share-o-plane using 2 dipoles and a USB extension lead - it looks great! Not a 'permanent' installation yet, but unobtrusive and working well.

Also, I did a homemade Rosetta upgrade as you were out of kits (and I was too impatient, they were available later the same day - doh!), it was WAAAY fiddly and ended up costing about the same compared to the official kit - I upgraded another one with the proper kit last week.

Technical Support / Tuned Low Profile Antenna for 1090
« on: June 26, 2018, 05:56:58 pm »
I'm getting 2 of your antennae, 1 for each freq. Can I cut down the one for 1090 tp 1/2 size(ish)? What total length
And is their any issue in reducing the 3m lead cable to, say, 0.5m, easy to do?

Technical Support / Request - analysing the .trk
« on: June 21, 2018, 11:46:16 pm »
Hi, is there somewhere I can get a handy guide to analysing the .trk files?
I'd like to be able to look to see what Mode C (no hex, you've told me that), Mode S, PAw, ADS-B, OGN  the unit has seen.
I would also like to go to a specific time in the flight and see what is seen there
I can see that there's regular data saved, but I don't know the timing cycle, is it every picosecond, second, minute?
I'm sure some of these questions are dumb, but I don't know which ones...
Regards, neilmurg

edit- I found RouteConverter but I'm not great with Unix, so struggling with installing and some Java version issues

General Discussion / 2 things to tell new users
« on: June 19, 2018, 01:18:56 am »
If PAw reports 100' below, target may be above or below, there's a 200' allowance in altitude reporting (so technically could be 400' out, but 200' in my experience)
If you're climbing or descending and get a 'Danger 200' above/below' without a 'Traffic' or 'Warning' before hand - it's YOUR Mode S/C it's seeing, don't sacrifice aircraft control looking for it (I'm not saying don't check)

Get used to the traffic reports on the ground and in the circuit, use it to build your SA (situational awareness) and familiarity with what the system is telling you

General Discussion / dipole for 1090 / ADS-B. SD doesn't receive GPS
« on: June 19, 2018, 01:08:35 am »
Is there a dipole with suckers for the Mode S/ADS-B transmissions? So I can bury the PAw but have the aerials out, I was just about to buy the P3I dipole, + GPS mouse, but need the other one.

And, 2nd Q :P, I'm having trouble getting traffic on my SD display, if I connect to Pilotaware it says 'GPS data not received (or similar) so I revert to mini tablet GPS. It clearly has GPS tho' as it can report range and direction to ADS-B targets. In some ways it's better, I don't have the distraction of targets on SD, but I do get the audio via audio cable into the Garmin 345 :P

Thankyou in anticipation, still lovin' it, I'm slowly getting the others in my group to engage.

General Discussion / PAw with Audio
« on: June 16, 2018, 07:17:56 pm »
As part of the radio 8.33 upgrade we got a Garmin 345 Audio panel so now have an audio jack that the PAw can use. I've used it on the last few flights from Blackbushe
It has made an incredible change to the impact of the PAw, especially in the circuit, I'm getting extra info for SA, including aircraft passing over the ATZ that aren't on frequency. We had 5 in the circuit today and it was a big help tracking the other aircraft, no screen watching involved, all 'eyes out'.
Nice job guys.
I'm doing Project Propeller tomorrow, 115 aircraft arriving, I think it might be useful....

Technical Support / PAw not working - Now working :D
« on: May 19, 2018, 11:21:55 am »
I have a pilotaware that was working a year ago but now doesn't. The red light comes on and flashes 2 long 3 short, the green light also 's flashes briefly twice. Light flashes then repeat. There is no WiFi broadcast. I suspect the WiFi or dvb-t dongle. I know I need to renew the license and I want to register it to someone else.
I've ordered replacement WiFi /dvb-t.
I've downloaded the latest software (correctly) and put it in, it meats to have loaded (mem card reformatted)
Advice please
