Technical Support / Re: Cannot remove Group-ID to Show Transponder Code
« on: December 08, 2019, 03:40:45 pm »
Thanks for the information Peter.

I remain confused.

Here is the extract of the email from LAA Engineering on Friday "...The ADSB status must display SIL and SDA set to 0 (third and fifth digits) and the transponder on mode S outputting a squawk code..."

Is the LAA requesting the impossible withe the squawk code?

C.

It’s the transponder that will supply the squawk, not you manually entering it in PAW.

See below - this is the traffic screen from my PAW a few minutes ago - the top two entries are emitting ADSB and the squawk is shown in the ‘SQ’ column.

General Discussion / Unsecured wifi and the problems it causes
« on: December 08, 2019, 10:53:30 am »
On more than one occasion I have had my tablet connect inadvertently to a PilotAware unit sitting in someone else's aircraft close by.

Yesterday I was starting up from departure from Leicester. My tablet connected automatically to what I thought was my PAW without me noticing, and I then struggled with it dropping out a couple of times. I ended up flying home with SD in 'Location Services' mode to dodge the problem Fortunately, I also have a smart phone mounted near the screen on which I use SD in 'Traffic' mode which seemed unaffected so at least I wasn't without traffic awareness on my journey home.

Later at home when reviewing the SD logs I noticed a spurious journey, emanating from Leicester Airport and heading directly from the parking area in a bent straight line out eastwards and extending to just outside the ATZ. This was timed at just the point when I was ready to taxi and struggling to get PAW to remain connected to SD.

Putting two and two together this must have been one of the helis next to where we were parked, and to one of whose PAWs my tablet had connected.

Is there any way you can get a message out to the community at large to a) apply a password to their PAW wifi b) set its power to the lowest workable level?

Hi Lee, yes SkyD has been updated, does that have an effect?

Remind me how to get a logfile and I'll get one.

The little green light on the GPS dongle is flashing OK.

Thanks, Regards, Clive
It's been a known issue in SkyDemon that when you do a version upgrade, it resets the 3rd Party Devices switches. Try checking them to make sure it's 'listening' properly.

Technical Support / Re: A really weird one, PAW grabbed traffic and held it.

Graham, if he'd have connected to G-ELEN's PAW then surely it would have shown his own aircraft as a 'target' and shown him as stationary. ..And it certainly wouldn't have kept the connection for six miles out?

That's what led me to speculate that there may be two issues interplaying here, as you are not the only person who seems to have had 'persistent' non-existent traffic being displayed.

It makes me wonder whether there are two things at play here, a bug in SkyDemon that makes it continue to display traffic erroneously, and in the case of the OP, he’d actually connected to G-ELEN’s unsecured PAW while on the ground.

I'm still very much in favour of a perpetual license (sic). All equipment in my plane keeps on working, although for some the manufacturer is no longer in business.

Well, there you go then.

That table is AWG to external diameter.
I disagree. Converting the diameters to cross sectional areas more or less equals the examples you’ve given.

Why would a person making wire jewellery (which is the original target audience of the table) be interested in the diameter of any plastic sleeve?

Long shot, but this has caught me out once or twice, is where you are on the apron and your tablet silently connects to someone else’s PAW, because they haven’t secured their WiFi with a password. You then either successfully connect SkyDemon which you promptly lose when you get out of range of their box, or it fails to connect and you are left wondering why it doesn’t.

I think the documentation should emphasise that renaming and securing your PAW’s hotspot makes like easier for everyone, especially now that uptake is becoming widespread.

Don’t lose heart with your Mac @GeoffreyC.

I downloaded the MacOS version of SD Card Formatter 5.0.1, and I’ve used it several times to format the SD cards for PAW upgrades and it’s worked first time, every time I’ve done it.

Technical Support / Re: SD Software upgrade
« on: June 23, 2019, 05:53:31 pm »
So has anyone done an update to new version successfully yet?
Yep - screenshotted the config and profile pages of the current version, replaced the MicroSD with one containing the new version and left it for 20 minutes. When I went back it was all done, and it took a couple more to enter the details from the screen shots.

It nicely coincided with an uplink ground station being installed over the last few days, so it’s been easy to test and play with.

What I have learnt is how many people fly around with poorly configured PAW units!

I have the original PAW not Rosetta. Ive just tried to upgrade to version 20190621. The extract seemed to work but ive just tried to connect to PAW using 192.168.1.1 but it failed. SD cant see it either. Im not sure whats gone wrong but just thought. Do I have to upgrade to Rosetta to use this version?
Have you tried entering http://192.168.1.1? The browser may require the full address, and not just the naked ip string.

Lee,

Can you confirm that connecting a tablet app i.e. SkyDemon has to be done by selecting ‘GDL90’ as the protocol (as per the trial software) and not ‘PilotAware’?

Thanks

IME every time SD is updated, the 3rd party settings need checking, as they may get switched off.
I had to do the same.
Every time Skydemon is updated, you must check and configure it properly to get PAW GPS signal and traffic alerts

Can someone please ask Tim about this on the SD forum?
Tim is aware.

As it’s an EASA aircraft it may be worth checking with your avionics engineer that connecting an uncertified source to your radio is permissible. Seems trivial, but it would be annoying if you went to the trouble of doing it, to find it disconnected for you at the next annual.
