Technical Support / Re: Antennas - where have you stuck yours?
« on: August 05, 2022, 09:33:26 pm »
As Peter said permanent installations are significantly better especially with external antennas then you get rid of that nasty obscuration that is suffered by carry-on systems that are not optimal.

Antennas can be fitted to PA28 using CS-STAN Issue 3 which was harmonised into the CAA regulations before we left EASA due to the will of the people in December 2021 CS-STAN Issue 3 0004.

CS STAN Issue 4 is more definitive but has not yet been harmonised into the CAA regulations .............they should be?

Sounds like you have a classic not a rosetta.
It's not a good idea to run aircrew from the PilotAware as it may on certain occasions take a lot of power. Best to run it from a separate source.

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Metal ATOM Case?
« on: August 05, 2022, 09:19:36 pm »
This is no secret. We have built several of these using the Nebra case with power over ethernet. There are about 12 in use. They are more expensive than other cases but work well if you want to have the case outside using PoE. Very little is totally waterproof and if it is one also has to consider diurnal heating and condensation but we have been working on this and have some solutions. If you want to install one at your site drop us an email at OGN@pilotaware .com

I have put a video on Youtube that may help folks understand the relationship between losing power and losing GPS.

This has also been included in the troubleshooting section of the Knowledgebase.

Yes it will work on the short USB cable
This is how I test the WiFi devices individually to make them easy to fit

Cheers Keith

Hi John.

As shown in the following document

https://global-uploads.webflow.com/5d56c24810fbfdbe08b488cd/6107c2df8ba4e7d2e72f9c2b_120802%20Difficulties%20in%20connecting%20PilotAware%20to%20Flight%20Bag%20Applications.pdf

There are two failure mechanisms that are reported between Sky Demon and PilotAware. Firstly,

Message 1 ‘Waiting for Device’
This message shows that the Sky Demon program is not connected to PilotAware. Th one you are getting?

This will be because
1) Your smart tablet or phone is not connected to the PilotAware WiFi.
2) The correct interface protocol has not been selected. Use PilotAware UDP

This message shows that SkyDemon is not connected to PilotAware through the iPad/PAW wifi interface.
The most common reason for this is that the power supply to the Classic or Rosetta device is interment.
The most common reason for this is that the micro USB power connection is faulty due to a loose connection between the micro USB on the RPi and the cable.
To check this waggle the cable in the micro USB connector socket and check that the small Red LED at the end of the Raspberry pi (Rip) does not go out momentarily.
If it does this is the problem.
When the power is disconnected the RPi will restart which will take about 90 seconds.
The result of this will be the connection drops out and the Sky demon reports Waiting for Device..
The user then reports that the system keeps dropping out which I think is your problem.

The solution for this is to change the RPI AND the cable unless you are convinced that it is only one of the two that is worn.

The fault usually occurs due to vibration between the cable and the connection. This happens when the installation is poor and the cable is vibrating at a different frequency to the box.
This can be fixed by fixing the cable to the box with a rubber band.

Please check this connection. If the red light is solid then something else is going on
Send the unit with the dongles and the cable back to us and we will check it out.

The second failure mechanism reported by sky demon is waiting for GPS which is usually a GPS shielding problem easily remedied by ensuring your GPS has a good view or replacing with a remote GPS.

You will be able to see if this is the problem by operating your Classic unit and monitoring the PilotAware RADAR screen not Sky Demon. If this is solid then the fault is between the Sky Demon app and the PilotAware. This is usually cured by selecting the correct interface protocol on the configuration page. Use PilotAware UDP

By the way is this the Classic you have in the RANS or the second-hand bitsa in the Cub

Regards

Keith

In the course of all this the Rosetta pigtail becane VERY hot. The wifi module was also hot. Having allowed everything to cool down I operated the Rosetta again without the wifi module. The Rosetta pigtail got hot again but maybe not as hot as when the wifi module was in. Is this normal? Not having had the case open and checking this before I have no way of knowing if this is normal and acceptable operating temperature. Makes me a bit nervous!

To ensure the temperature issue was nothing to do with the aircraft power supply and the USB port I use I turned off and allowed to cool. I then used the same recommended cable which. I plugged directly into an Anker battery pack which I used for the PAW classic in the my previous aircraft. The temperature of the pigtail and wifi module again reached concerning levels.

It isn’t the pigtail that get hot it is the SDR which is normal for that device. If you have put the WiFi dongle above this then it will get hot through radiated heat from the SDR.  can you put the WiFi in one of the USB sockets to the left.

I test them all and they dont get hot on their own

First flight using IGrid today, Andrewsfield out to the East, Clacton-Felixstowe and return. A regular route I do just for a bit of currency

First Impressions, A LOT more targets are visible, that's for sure  ;D
A lot more -relevant- targets, i.e. likely to represent a threat, or just a lot more distant clutter?

It’s a genuine question, as I really want to know whether it’s worth the the extra faff every time I go flying.

You should get more targets in the local area as iGRID will assist in removing obscuration from poorly fitted devices particularly those that cant have remote antennas
