German Specific Forum / Welcome
« on: February 03, 2019, 02:30:53 pm »
This Forum has been set up to allow discussion between the growing list of PilotAware users in Germany. Please use it to communicate between your flying colleagues especially those that are not fluent in English. Normal Forum Rules apply apply courteous and polite please as you always are.

Please note that we will not be able to answer technical questions from the UK unless they are posted on the British Forum in English sorry. However, there are a growing number of champions in Germany who understand the power of PilotAware and will be able help you directly. Perhaps someone will translate this to start us all off. I think that if I use Google translate then the message will get lost.

OGN-R Rebroadcast Stations in Germany

In the United Kingdom PilotAware has linked-up with the Open Glider Network to upgrade existing or install new OGN-R rebroadcast stations to improve the Electronic Conspicuity between light aircraft and FLARM equipped Gliders. This is the first step in greater interoperability between all systems.

https://pilotaware.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/What-is-OGN-R.pdf

There has now been interest shown in upgrading existing or installing new systems in Germany. Only a few sites have been done so far, these being new sites at

Site                      Site Name                        Site Installer                       OGN Name
EDNX                   Oberschleissheim              Markus Stein                       PWEDNX
ETNG                   Geilenkirchen                    Thomas Hein                       PWETNG
Uehrde                 Uehrde                             Christian Meier                    PWUEHRDE

Potential Sites      Site Name                         Site Installer                       OGN Name
EDMJ                   Jesenwang                        Florian Larcher                     tba.
EDAZ                   Schoenhagen                    Christian Meier                     tba.

The good news is that to help with installation PilotAware will supply most of the electronics for free (no charge). This will mean that the club at the site will have to buy the other parts which cost about €200 when bought locally. All instructions are available but in English only! Any offers to translate into German would be very welcome.

Installation instructions are available here.

OGN-R PilotAware / NOW THE BRIDGE PI2B AND CASE ARE FREE
« on: August 11, 2018, 03:24:54 pm »
Setting Up a New OGN-R Station or Upgrading an Existing OGN Station is now even Cheaper ;D

Thanks to the successful Rosetta upgrade program we have more than a few Pi2B Computers, Bridges and Cases that have been donated to the expansion the OGN-Network. These refurbished units and a P3i Antenna are being offered Free of Charge to anyone who wants to install a new OGN-R station or upgrade an existing OGN station. This can be at a UK or mainland Europe.

This will mean that the cost for installing an OGN-R will now be reduced to about £180. This will have to be funded locally but we can help you to buy the hard to get bits like the +9dB FLARM Antenna, Factory made P3i Antenna, HDF Co-Ax connectors etc. if required. I will even make up the cables and configure the software for your site if required.

Instructions on what to do and information on the OGN project are available here  https://pilotaware.com/ogn/. If you want to learn more email ogn@pilotaware.com and we can get your FREE kit out to you.

Latest news is that we are just about to pass 80 sites installed but want more for project secret.  8)

Thanks for your support. Target 200 stations by next year.

Thanks for your Support

OGN-R PilotAware / Congratulations from EASA
« on: June 22, 2018, 09:00:42 pm »
Last week I spent a very interesting couple of days at the EASA conspicuity forum, in Cologne. There were lots of interesting folks there from Europe including CAA, NATS AOPA in the UK and their European equivalents including the German Gliding association and other interesting parties from France etc. Also manufacturers including FLARM, TRIG, AiR Avionics Garmin and PilotAware of course were represented.

The message from EASA in the end of session summary was one of interoperability between existing systems and the support of systems that have been shown to work and that are the natural choice of the communities. No one size fits all. In this respect FLARM and PilotAware were specifically mentioned.

The EASA Chair and Head of Conspicuity took the time to specifically meet with me at the end of the Forum to learn more about what we are doing with OGN-R and congratulate us on "A wonderful initiative led by the GA Power and Gliding communities in the UK".

Thats you by the way. So give your selves a pat on the back.

They are watching what we are doing and have been encouraged by the growth, the co-operation and the interoperability that we have achieved by our natural enthusiasm for EC and safety in general.

We will be meeting again at the latter part of the year and the OGN-R will be on the agenda so lets make sure we can get to 100 sites installed and prove the continuing ingenuity and support for this amazing project.

Well done everybody. We really are making history and you will be able too say. I was there, in try pioneering fashion.

Technical Support / POWER .......... The Cause of Most Problems
« on: June 01, 2018, 12:33:49 pm »
Are you having problems?

We get more than enough support calls regarding low GPS pickup, WiFi drop outs, GPS drop outs and the like.

The overwhelming majority of these have been due to POOR POWER SUPPLIES.

One recently returned unit which sounded like a real basket case was working perfectly when tested at PilotAware HQ using a recommended ANKER Power supply.

On further investigation the user admitted to using an iPhone charger!!!!!!!!. PLEASE PLEASE as we mention on all the documentation use a power supply that is capable of supplying 5.2V and 2.1A.

ANKER Power Core or ANKER cigarette lighter charges are good for this and are inexpensive. They are available quickly from Amazon or other suppliers cheaper than we could supply them.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019GJLER8/ref=psdc_329078031_t3_B00VJSGT2A

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Charger-PowerIQ-Technology-Motorola-black/dp/B00VH84L5E/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1527852490&sr=1-5&keywords=anker+powerdrive

Also if you want an EASA approved unit the Charge 2 Charge 4 units are the best you can get and are available at  https://charge4.harkwood.co.uk/ Great work from Jeremy Curtis.

Its not all bad news. Here is a quote from an anonomous customer who was having lots of problems and then took our simple advice

Quote
I received the „Anker power core II slim“ a few days ago and used it with Rosetta and the included Anker cable for several flights – works like a charm now! Now I have 9 satellites at start up an no Wifi  or GPS – disconnects to Skydemon anymore – looks like the power core really matters.

Yep it really does. The moral of this post IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH PILOTAWARE AND ARE NOT USING A  CORRECT POWER SUPPLY YOUR PROBLEM IS THE POWER SUPPLY NOT PILOTAWARE.

Also make sure that you are using the latest software available from PilotAware.lode.co.uk

Thanks

*Needs additional hardware upgrade. PilotAware has been working to support the South of England UAT Weather Trial. The solution is working correctly and has been demonstrated to work with EasyVFR and SkyDemon over a GDL90 interface. Using this facility will allow trialists to gather and feedback information. At the moment SkyDemon is unable to support bearing-less traffic (Mode C/S) and Weather data simultaneously. Solutions are obviously under investigation.

See you at Popham Stand number M8

General Discussion / Electronic conspicuity at the LAA Rally
« on: September 30, 2017, 01:16:38 pm »
At the 2017 LAA Rally at Sywell we captured the all the transmissions of visiting aircraft using (EC) Electronic Conspicuity containing GPS co-ordinates. PilotAware receivers were located on both the PilotAware and Sky Demon stands and the data verified between the two. Thanks to the guys at Sky Demon for sharing this data. PilotAware was chosen as the only available EC equipment, capable of receiving all the types of EC used in the UK. On the days of the Rally, the live information was passed to simple virtual RADAR screens on each stand to show arriving and departing aircraft in real time.

As several requests, have been received to share the data, here are the results.

Note: Aircraft using Mode C/S transponders were also recorded but as these do not have an associated bearing could not be plotted on the Virtual RADAR Screens. Great results for PilotAware!

Technical Support / PilotAware Suddenly Stops Working
« on: August 14, 2017, 10:42:06 am »
We have recently had a few instances where PilotAware units have for no apparent reason stopped working. Very strange. Users have reported various diagnostics but in each case after a few cycles of email support the simple reason was found. The License has Expired.

The reason this happens is as follows.

(i) PilotAware sends an email to users in advance of their license needing its annual renewal.
(ii) Normally, users then visit pilotaware.lode.co.uk to renew their license.
(iii) An email is then sent to the user with the new 12 month, 16 digit licence code which the user puts into the four boxes in the config page as shown in the Operational Instructions to be found at pilotaware.com

Where this can fall down is if the emails from PilotAware go into the users junk folder
(i) you see no reminder
(ii) when you have paid you see no new Code.

The answer to this is to put support@pilotaware.com into your address book so notifications from us don't get lost in the junk.

To check if you have this problem. Consider if your pilotAware is over a year old and should you have renewed your license, then this may be the reason that it has suddenly stopped working.

To confirm this log onto the home page by accessing the PilotAware WiFi and typing in 192.168.1.1. If your licence has expired 5 boxes will be red and there will be a banner at the top saying License Expired.

If the license has expired then it can be renewed at pilotaware.lode.co.uk.

Thanks for your support.

OGN-R PilotAware / New Stations Added
« on: July 26, 2017, 01:22:17 pm »
New stations are now being added on a regular basis. Thanks to Chris Tyrell a new site has been installed at PWRADFORD Abingdon Oxford. Chris tells me the antennas have not yet been raised aloft but a fantastic effort as I only met him at Wellesbourne yesterday to let him have the antennas and bridge. Great work Chris.

Also Ben Smith reports that he will have his station set up at Aldershot very soon. Thanks Ben great work.

Both of these stations will complement those set up recently at Guildford, Thame and Popham. Lets watch the progress of this new sector and see how it grows. Anyone else in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Bucks or Surrey who wants to help please contact ogn@pilotaware.com

Thanks again for helping to make the skies safer.

OGN-R PilotAware / What is OGN-R and How To Use This New Topic
« on: July 11, 2017, 10:57:22 am »
OGN-PilotAware Uplink progress.                     July 2017.

Last December PilotAware joined with the OGN to enhance the OGN Network so that aircraft equipped with PilotAware units can see gliders equipped with FLARM or OGN trackers. This has been done to increase safety between powered aircraft and gliders. By April 4 existing OGN sites had been upgraded to OGN-R sites. These are at Bidford, Shennington, Husbands Bosworth and Corby (Stoke). In addition, a new site was introduced at Wellesbourne Airfield.

The trial was very successful and now PilotAware equipped aircraft flying in the midlands are able to be alerted of gliders in their area. By going to the Open Glider website at http://ognrange.onglide.com and in the 'Show All, Choose' box insert PW% you will after resizing the screen see the extent of the OGN-R coverage. (Five other sites have also been installed at Balerno Wilmcote, Popham, Thame and Guildford in recent weeks but these are not yet optimum performance).

The trial has met all expectations and has received much critical acclaim from users who are able to see when they are under the influence of the OGN uplink. We have introduced changes to PilotAware RADAR in the latest software so that it shows how many base stations you are receiving.

The plan is now to roll out the enhancement of other existing OGN sites and also to use the Powered Flying community to fill in the gaps. With a useful 30Km range each station will provide overlap and redundancy.

The project is now looking for Funding, Champions and Sites.

Funding, we hope that clubs, individuals and organisations will muster their resources and fund individual sites. Installation of a brand-new site should be less than £250 per site using commercially available antennas. An upgrade will be half of this. PilotAware will be providing the 869.5MHz Radio Bridge and Antenna at a discounted price and it required no license. A site will need power, the internet (it doesn’t have to be fast) and somewhere to mount the antennas.

Champions, we will be looking for Champions to co-ordinate the installation of ground stations on geographical areas. The software has been produced to make individual site configuration easy.

Sites, as well as the existing OGN sites, we are exhorting powered flying clubs, individual users and organisations to fill in the gaps.

This new Topic will spawn new threads as the project progresses. So please address all queries about OGN-R here.

General Discussion / PilotAware at Popham
« on: April 24, 2017, 09:40:38 am »
The PilotAware Team will be demonstrating and exhibiting PilotAware at the BMAA Microlight Rally at Popham next weekend 29th and 30th April. There is bound to be a good gathering of Aware Pilots so we look forward to seeing you there. At Popham the air can get very busy and the controller usually asks that you monitor the circuit pattern and join at your discretion. Not all people have PilotAware or any transponder so once you are in circuit its definitely keep a good lookout outside the cockpit not in it.

Also when you have landed please turn PilotAware off as soon as possible otherwise folks on approach will get lots of close up voice alerts.

See you there. PilotAware will be available for sale so save on the postage.

PilotAware Team.
