That's not great news Jeremy for anyone looking for a replacement.  I imagine the problem will be sorting out the wood from the crud!!!!

Hi Martin

I note that your 1090 dongle is showing Red  and Unavailable.  Is this actually plugged in, I am aware this can happen momentarily when first booted until some traffic is detected but if this is continuous it may indicate a faulty dongle drawing excess voltage.  Just a thought.

Works for me too Lee, now I have to have a word with Rob Weijers about his insipid colours for the airport Metars in EV4. ;D

I don't think too many GA aircraft are fitted with squat switches linked to the undercarriage to mute the ADSB on the ground, They are mostly reserved for your work-day mounts. ;D

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Which antenna co-ax?
« on: February 03, 2021, 07:26:24 pm »
Doing the preparation for our new Atom/Grid instal. Slightly complicated as I cant get site access at the moment to measure cable runs to the antenna location, so wondering about just bulk buying the cable and connectors so we can make it up on site when we get access.  There seems to be a big price difference between RG8, RG8x and LMR400.  I think we're going to end up with about 8m cable run, so just wondered what experience is with the different cable grades  and what people typically use?

Hi
This is the cable I used for my Atom/Grid unit.
  https://www.wifi-antennas.co.uk/cable-crimps-and-crimp-tools/coaxial-cable/hdf400-coaxial-cables
I bought 10 meters and used it for two aprox 4.5m runs on my P3i and Flarm antennas and just used ordinary low loss satellite tv coax on the 1090 antenna.  It's a strong signal so not so critical.
You can get all your connectors from the same source too.

General Discussion / Re: Colours
« on: February 02, 2021, 08:13:37 pm »
Hi

Could I suggest that a possible solution to this for all users would be to have a box at the start of the Metar line to depict the colour code (possibly using the distance box rather than adding another one) and maybe the colour in text abbreviations at the end of the metar, as in many of the mainly, (I think,) military Metars

I have to admit that I find it hard to read the thin black text on the colours without zooming them and I'm not colour blind.

Feel free to ignore me if this is a massive amount of coding.  ;D

Technical Support / Re: OGN-R uplink typical range
« on: January 14, 2021, 07:45:17 pm »
Thanks Chris
We should probably start talking about our next development which internally we are calling SKYGRID
basically ATOM network in the air

As part of the Release end of last year, we incorporated additional side messages
Air to Air
Ground to Air
Air to Ground

The Air to Air messages allow a PAW to inform its neighbours, if it is not receiving uplink data
Its chosen neighbour will act as an intermediary, supplying critical traffic information

We have had this all working in simulation and live in the lab, we will start field trials as soon as se are allowed

Thx
Lee

I can't quite believe this little nugget has not gone viral and knocked Covid off the top spot.  Instead it seems to have raised barely a whimper, and there's poor PaulSS seen wandering around Bembridge with half his face missing from biting his lip.

Lee, you are bloody tease!!

Technical Support / Re: Bluetooth Volume
« on: December 22, 2020, 05:33:41 pm »
Unfortunately Altomar, the volume adjustment only works for the wired connection through Audio/Video 3.5mm jack socket and does not affect the Bluetooth volume.  There are other threads on here discussing this.  I used to use the BT via a miniature receiver plugged into my headset and it had its own volume control but I can't remember what others come up with.
I now use a wired system through a mixer to get both Paw audio and EasyVFR audio mixed to my intercom.

I believe it's to do with the Rpi hardware that there is no volume control for BT.

PaulSS

If the mixer you are using is the one I suspect Peter recommended and is the same as mine the "Hart Just Mixer" then I am surprised your not getting enough volume from the Rpi.  Are you sure you have the volume in the Paw config page set to 10 because I find I do not need anywhere near full volume on the mixer and very little gain used (to keep white noise down) and volume to my headset  via the Trigg auxiliary input is absolutely fine.

Sorry for asking the obvious question.

Hi Bladeslapper

So sorry to be negative about this but short of placing your unit in a metal or carbon fibre box it is hard to envisage a worse positioning of your unit.  Other than the position of your GPS which you have already acknowledged, your antennas are at such an angle as to be well out of phase with any incoming signals.  You will be broadcasting your P3i signal in roughly a doughnut shape at 90 degrees to the  length of your antenna and the majority of the forward transmission is angled upwards at apparently 45 degree, making it less likely for you to trigger a response from any groundstations you are approaching and seriously reducing the range of your air to air contacts I would think.  Rearwards you are broadcasting into a couple of bags of water and your aircraft interior whatever that my be made of.
Is it not feasible to fit the battery to the base and lay the unit flat with the GPS towards the window and then have the room to set the antennas to vertical further away from the screen.

Oh well

I've been out this afternoon and came home and trawled through my files and emails to make sure i was correct in my statement that the .pgp was ok for you to use.

Just managed to confirm it and see that Peter has beaten me to the punch.   ;D

General Discussion / Re: PilotAware Classic Software Update

Hi Steve

Link to software updates is:-   https://pilotaware.lode.co.uk/   Fairly self explanatory once your in there.  For Apple users there is a new App available that I believe makes it unnecessary to know the location but the poor relation Android users (like myself) must await some benevolent developer to port the App to the Android platform.

The App also only works with the latest Apple hardware and software but I'm sure from the Paw version you are using that you are able to simply use the .pgp file using a memory stick to update your unit as I currently do with the engineering versions I am testing.

Hope that helps

Mmmm

Not sure how efficient your GPS is going to be as you appear to have just slapped a battery pack over the top of it.
Also if using it in the vertical position as in photo the GPS antenna is not facing the sky.
You may of course be using a remote GPS but you don't say that.

Alan
