Technical Support / Re: Update via USB Memory Stick
« on: February 26, 2022, 09:59:48 pm »
Hi Richard
Are you aware that there is now an Updater App for iOS & Android, available from the Play/App Store, that greatly simplifies this process.

If there is some other reason why you want to use a memory stick to upgrade your PilotAware, here is a link to the software.

https://pilotaware.lode.co.uk/downloads/PilotAware/PilotAware.pgp

This will download the software to your PC tablet or phone and you will then need to copy this to your memory stick.  It must be in the root directory of your memory stick  Then,  remove the PAw GPS dongle and replace with your memory stick. (This is just to create space for the memory stick.)  whilst logged into your unit, navigate to the "Updates" tab along the top then Tap, "check for updates."
When the version number appears, tap, "Install" and wait, do not switch off.  It may take up to 20 minutes and your unit will reboot once the update is finished.  Once the unit reboots you can safely swap the memory stick back to the GPS dongle.
You will need to  log in to the unit again to check that the update was successful as your device will have dropped the wifi during the reboot.  Don't forget that if you are anywhere there is an alternative wifi source you will have to re-select the Paw wifi on your device.

I hope my memory is serving me well as it's a while since I did it this way, it's so much easier with the Updater App.

Alan

It's easy peasy to set your own start screen.  Just navigate to it using the buttons to start with then, whilst your on the Home screen, just use your browser  settings to save it as a bookmark on your device, (phone/tablet,) home screen for easy access ever after.  saves you having to type 192.168.1.1 into your browser every time.

That's how I didn't even know that it now defaulted to the Radar screen. ;D

Hi Lee
Totally agree, getting involved in that thread would do yourself and PilotAware no favours at all.
I can envisage it all going the same way as the UAT weather trials

Technical Support / Re: Radar page blank

Hi

As far as I am aware there is nothing in any of the settings pages that have any control over the Radar page.
It looks to me like a Zoom setting on your device that is causing this.  I can achieve the same view as your screenshot by zooming in on my android device, (which is using Google Chrome) so that all I can see on screen is the buttons as in your shot.
I'm not an iphone user so cant help with settings on that device but on my android I have to ensure that I am not using the "Desktop Site" as this can create excessive zoom.

General Discussion / Re: Atom Station Uplinks

Hi SGS66

Lee would have to give the definitive answer to this one but i would assume that if the other a/c PAW is obscured for whatever reason but you still receive his Mode S then you will receive either a Mode S/3D report if as you say in range of an Atom/Grid and if not then you should receive a non-directional audio traffic warning/banner alert depending on you choice of nav software.  This is what happens with my EasyVFR but I cannot speak for SkyDemon.

If you can obtain a right-angle micro usb connector then a cable tie right round the unit and over the connector works well.  You can even use a releasable cable tie so that you can re-use it if you require to remove it for any reason. ;D

Technical Support / Re: Internet access for pilotaware

In the absence of any other replies I have to say I'm fairly certain that what you propose will not work as the PilotAware wifi is simply a hotspot to provide connectivity for you tablet etc. to receive the data from it.  It does not provide an internet connection.
The only way I have heard of this being achieved is by using a tablet with a 4g connection which can then pipe the weather info to the likes of Skydemon, EasyVFR or other EFB whilst still receiving the traffic data via wifi.  Tha only other option as far as I am aware is as you hinted, using a mobile phone hotspot to your tablet to achieve the same result.

Someone may know different and correct me if I am wrong.

Technical Support / Re: GPS Signal Lost

Hi Gary

I started this a couple of hours ago then got diverted to a minor household emergency and of course others have responded meantime.

The iPad/iPhone experts will be back shortly i'm sure but just to conform that you are correct in your reading of the Home screen.  You are indeed only seeing 8 satellites with 3 in use, which is insufficient for a GPS lock.  You need at least 4 in use.
If this shot was taken out in the open, (I think you said you were airborne so presume it is,) then only having 8 in view is a bit surprising, especially if you are referring to the GPS mouse which is available from PilotAware.  I use the basic Ublox 7 from the clasic but on a short USB extender to get it on top of my flexwing pod.  Paw unit is underneath.
with so few satellites in view you will find that the "in use" satellites can flit between 3 & 4, sometimes 5 and back to 3 several times before getting a solid lock especially as Ian says if it has been moved any distance whilst switched off as it needs to find the satellites again.  Whichever GPS you are using it must have a clear unobstructed view of the sky

Technical Support / Re: Best Android Tablet for Rosetta
« on: April 05, 2021, 07:46:41 pm »
Hi Sean

Still using an elderly Nexus 7 (2013) as my back up tablet but more recently bought a Lenovo Tab4-8 as I required a 64 bit architecture tablet for the latest version of EasyVFR 4 nav.  software.  Both have proved extremely reliable with both older classic and later rosetta Paw units.  My wife has a Samsung Galaxy TabA-8 which I sometimes use in the house for testing using my static Paw unit and it too is rock solid on the wifi.  Both the Lenovo and Samsung were very reasonably priced.
Hope that helps.

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Cannot get clock to sync to correct time
« on: March 30, 2021, 12:02:53 pm »
Is the fact that the date is the same as the version date significant, is there somehow a link being formed with this date and is the actual time correct??

Oooh, don't you just love trying to teach granny to suck eggs?? ;D  ;D

Hi Vic

Only other thing I can suggest is to log into your paw and then click on the "Updates" window and check if there is any mention of the 20201101 version next to the install button.  If it is there it may be worth tapping the button and see what happens.
Other than that its maybe try the memory usb stick or whatever was your previous tried and trusted method of updating to prove if a glitch in the paw software has occurred, after that it's above my pay grade i'm afraid.

Hi Vic

I have to ask the obvious question:   You are making sure you are connected to the PilotAware wifi for step two and three aren't you?......Sorry

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Data consumption

Steve

I think you are missing the point of my post.
Despite the claims of the mobile network providers that they cover 99% of the country, I'm sure we've all experienced visiting places that get poor or no signal on one or more networks.   So Lee's comment about £16.00 for unlimited data is not always going to be correct, as PaulSS has experienced.  I was not referring to regional (or post code) differences in pricing by any particular network provider but that the best priced provider may not be available in some areas, due to cr@ppy signal.

Vince

Nice offer but would not want to put you to any extra effort for something that is mainly academic at the moment.
I believe some home routers are capable of reporting data usage of individual devices on the network but unfortunately my Virgin router is not that sophisticated.  I thought there may be some smaller strips that currently used, or had tried this method and found the costs prohibitive or otherwise.  :-\

Hi Guys
Looks like a positive result Paul but, even taking Lee's comments into consideration, the cynic in me says that not all areas, especially the more remote, are blessed with the best deals, so it would be good to hear from any station operator who is currently running an Atom station on a purely 4G router and can give a fairly accurate estimate of monthly data usage.  I realise that this may vary by situation depending on traffic volumes and running periods etc. but some indication could be extremely useful when trying to persuade potential operators for more remote sites.  Nobody wants the effort of setting up a site only to fall by the wayside because the running costs are unacceptable.

If anyone owns, or is aware of, a station operating on 4G perhaps they could point them in this direction.

Regards
Alan
